**** YOU NBC!

People of Earth:

In the last few days, Iíve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, Iíve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, Iíve been absurdly lucky. That said, Iíve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isnít the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesnít matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; itís always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

Hey, some love em', some don't. He's been pure comedic GENIUS for over the past 20 years.

Conan is great, but there's nothing in there about definitely leaving. Misleading thread title.

I really do like Conan. I have a feeling that a good number of people who don't like him haven't seen some of his best stuff. Hopefully he'll go some where they will let him do whatever he wants.

Conan is hilarious and getting a raw deal. NBC got greedy, Conan was approached to do a show on another network and thats when NBC approached Jay and asked him to step down in 2009.

Problem is if you have 2 late night hosts you have none, kind of like the whole 2 QB concept that never works.

I love both of them and thought Conan would really come into his own in the Late Night seat. Sadly he wasn't given a chance.

Kudos to Conan though, he has come a long way since his days as a writer for the Simpsons.

Leno just couldn't let it go. He totally screwed Conan by retiring and the un-retiring to have a show right before Conan's. Leno's show was the one that got the bad ratings and ultimately led to this. Conan was still finding his crowd at that slot but doing good enough in the ratings. NBC has been terrible in primetime and now they'll be terrible in late night. What a debacle.

says you. Great writer and witty as hell. If Jay was planning on exiting late night talk in 2012, why not stick Leno in the later slot for the good of NBC?

Conan rules. Classy not bumping Jimmy too. I hope he winds up on another network, I was stoked he moved an hour earlier so I could finally watch his show again.

He got screwed in many ways; most notably the crappy 10:00 lead in from that hack Leno. But, as much as I have enjoyed Conan over the years, if you don't produce ratings, you're going to be gone. Simple as that.

I love Conan. I hope he goes to Fox and blows Leno's show away. Which he probably will.

This sucks for Conan. He is very funny and was doing a solid job with The Tonight Show. Leno did a great job of taking over for Carson, but Jay walked away on his own volition. It's his fault.

Someone here at the network (not NBC) is telling me that Conan has a multi-million dollar walk-away option. As in, many multi-millions. Haven't confirmed it anywhere yet.

I don't blame him.

The rest of his life on easy-street, doing whatever he likes.

Conan is easily the best in late night right now. Granted I'm right in his target demographic that went through college watching him at midnight regularly. I'm pulling for him no matter what network he ends up on.

Leno is a lazy, no-talent jackass. Never been funny, recycling the same ****ty jokes and routines for a decade, screwed over a superior Letterman for the gig, now showing zero class in jerking Conan around after pretending to graciously hand over the reigns. But I guess America loves those Jaywalking segments and hearing about his car collection...

Conan is awesome if you ever saw the late show. He just needs time to adjust his style to the new audience (older people).

Stephen Colbert SUCKED the first 6 months of his show. I hated it. Now he's a genius.

All this because Jay Leno refuses to lie down. He must want another dusenberg.

Wow, the thought that someone would DVR Conan to watch at an earlier time just makes me want to puke...

That's where you're wrong. Jay's numbers in primetime are DOG ****. Terrible. Because nobody watches him, because America is tired of him.

They attempted something stupid, and they got burned, and Leno was right there with 'em. Now he's going to sit idly by and let Conan get burned? Eff that.

Put Leno on as a lead-in to SNL. At least that show sucks cock.

Watching the Jay Leno show go down in flames was satisfying and I want to agree that it was an indictment of his "comedy" getting old. Fact is, though, he was the timeslot winner with the Tonight Show. NBC must think he can still own that time. But, hopefully you're right and America will continue to do the right thing.

It's an $80 million over 4 years walk-away option.

I'd do that in a second. Start doing other ventures and just enjoy life.

Conan was always my favorite. Didn't like his tonight show nearly as much as Late Night, but i still watched on occasion. And I agree with most of you that the new Leno show was unwatchable.

I'm with y'all on Ferguson. Guy runs his show on pocket change but he's still more entertaining than the other late night shows. Funny dude.

Conan kills Jay. THough it would seem physiologically impossible, Leno both sucks AND blows simultaneously.

Dude isn't funny.

Carson was funny. Letterman was funny (until he got all old and bitter) Conan is funny.

Leno drew numbers on the tonight show because old people fell asleep with the TV on during his dumbass show. He doesn't draw numbers because people are awake and watch for a minute and say "Who is this idiot?" and change the channel.

Leave it to the OM, purveyors and disseminators of fine comedy, to make zero contribution to the late-night talk show debate

The problem with conan is that people either love him or hate him. And from the looks of the ratings more people hate him than not. At least with Leno (or letterman) you didn't have that black and white assessment. Many people were closer to the indiffernt line with leno and that helped him in the ratings. The people that loved him tuned in, as did the people that were indifferent. The only people that didn't were the ones who hated him and thats where letterman got his audience. Leno (with the tonight show) has been #1 in the ratings for quite some time so its hard to argue with NBC wanting him back in that slot.

The Tonight Show did worse in the ratings after Leno left. Now Letterman regularly beats it in the ratings, when before, Leno usually won out over Letterman.

NBC should have never screwed with what they had.

Fallon's show is decent, but Carson Daly's sucks now that it's gone to some artsy-fartsy video presentation.

Put Leno back on The Tonight Show at 11:35pm.

Put Conan back on Late Night at 12:35am.

Give Fallon the 1:35am show.

Kick Carson Daly off the freaking air!
