Spiderman 4 Scrapped - Studio looking to do a full franchise reboot for 2012

BREAKING NEWS! 2ND UPDATE: Mike Fleming and Nikki Finke have just confirmed that Sony Pictures decided today to reboot the Spider-Man franchise after franchise director Sam Raimi pulled out of Spider-Man 4 because he felt he couldn't make its summer release date and keep the film's creative integrity. This means that Raimi and the cast including star Tobey Maguire are out. There will be no Spider-Man 4. Instead, Mike Fleming is told, the studio will focus on a Summer 2012 reboot from a script by Jamie Vanderbilt with a new director and a new cast. All this took place today at meeting on the lot today. An official Sony Pictures news release about it is out now.

Good. Spider Man 1 was great, 2 was very good and 3 was TRASH.

Redirect, get a cool witty character to play Peter Parker and take this franchise where it deserves to be. While they're at it, FIX X-MEN!!!!!!!!!! OMG. Amazing how they trashed the potential that movie had.

Rebooting a franchise that's...um...8 years old? Interesting. I guess they kinda did that with the recent Hulk film, but the Ang Lee one was a bit of bomb. Remaking a popular series within a decade of it coming out is a new one to me.

Finally! Maybe now they can get a more talented, (and sexy) actress to play MJ. My suggestion would be the redhead chick from the G.I Joe movie.

I honestly thought James Franco would have played a better Spiderman than Tobey Maguire...so hopefully they get a believable guy to play the part.

I am guessing it involves a corvette chase that ends at the edge of a cliff at which point Pete joins Starfleet and becomes the captain of the Flagship of the fleet after an incident with a time traveling antagonist even though he was suspended of rank or power during the incident.

I bet they get Malcom McDowell to play the time traveling bad guy with a cameo of Stan Lee as the Kirk who is stuck in limbo in heaven cutting wood for his one room log cabin and Dave Chappelle plays Whoopie Goldbergs husband with a goofy hat like Whoopie had who swoops in while Malcom McDowell's character is hosting an orgy with his favorite horse and saves the day by saying "I'm Rick James BITCH".

This is a REALLY REALLY fast reboot... normally there is supposed to be a rather large gap between films on reboots like this.

I agree with bpc about the 1st two and the 3rd... man the 3rd was ****ing wretched.

Even more weird since the 1st two were box office smashes, even the 3rd did alright.

I know why this is being done though.

Dark Knight fever.

Expect a much darker Spider-Man film.

It's harder to pull off Spider Man than Batman. Wayne is just a quiet, dark, brooding, calculating man. Parker actually has to be witty, funny, tough and heroic. A little bit harder to cast for that IMO.

IMO, comic book flicks only really work when they are trilogies that set each successive movie up to some grand conclusion. Otherwise, they end up spinning out down the road as the studios start throwing in Danny Devito as The Penguin, and Arnold Schwarzenegger in as Mr. Freeze.

thank god. maybe they can get it right this time around. an actual actor that can be the smartass Peter Parker from the comics, and an actress that is actually hot. in the comics MJ is like insanely gorgeous, basically she is the Megan Fox of the comic world, and Raimi thought the best way to bring that kind of hotness to life was with Kirsten Dunst

and even the movies were nothing great. the 1st was decent but the 2nd had to play that whole whoa is me story line, having Parker walking around like a little blitch complaining about his troubles of having all those powers.

Having a hard time coming up with a comic that pulled off the successful trilogy. Watching Spiderman 3 was like watching the Broncos get blown out at home to the Chiefs.

The new Batman has a chance, but it will be hard to top the Joker character and performance. It will be interesting to see Ironman 2 in June. So much potential there and they may just have the best lead man in Hollywood right now.

I didn't think Tobey was terrible as Spider-Man until the 2nd one. And then he just started to suck, but still, it was Spider Man which made it tolerable.

Ryan Reynolds would have made a great Spider Man but that cards burned with him playing Dead-Pool.

Successfully maintaining a comic book franchise on the silver screen is a tough gig. I think they have to be conceptualized as movies and then drawn as comics for them to work. Maybe.

The problem, really, is the antagonists. If it's not enough that you've got a super hero running aound in spandex or a rubber suit, you have antagonists who are just flat goofy. The Green Goblin absolutely destroys Spiderman as a franchise. But leave him out and the fan boys are up in arms.

I have hope for the new Batman. They at least try to approach it from a pespective that looks for the roots of why the antagonist is acting out as such. They spent some serious effort in making the characters work. Very few of these comic movies really do that successfully.

If there is one franchise that I think that they could reset and do a successful trilogy with, it would be Superman. I would love to see Christopher Nolan take a crack at that one.

I know the feeling. I like games, but not like I used to. But occassionaly one will catch my attention and I'll play it through. The last game I played through was the latest Zelda. That was one of the single best gaming experiences I can remember having. It was like being a kid again. The best part, my wife WANTED me to play it because she enjoyed watching it.

I like it, but I think I read the Matrix trilogy was constructed in a similar fashion to what you describe. While not a comic, it does show you that scripting a trilogy before the first movie goes into production can still go horribly wrong.

I personally really liked that trilogy. The problem with it was that the first one was such a mind bender that nothing that came behind it could live up to it. People expected to be blown away by the second and the third, and there was no way they could do that.

Go to Cannes or Sundance you ****ing hippie bastard. ;P

A reboot doesn't surprise me with the Spiderman franchise. Raimi has been pretty vocal (for him) of his distaste for how Spiderman 3 came out, and since then he's started up a new network TV show (Legend of the Seeker). He basically set himself up with a direct path to exit the franchise.

But then, thats what Sony gets for letting a real Spiderman fran handle the license when all they really wanted was Spidey Vs. Venom. The biggest complaint I've heard from Raimi with regards to Spidey 3 was not so subtle comments implying that Venom was shoehorned into the movie because of corporate decisions. In reality he wanted it to be a story focused on acquiring the symbiotic suit and Harry becoming the new Goblin, with Sandman as a villain who's initial plot arc at least was started and finished in one film. Supposedly he wanted it to then lead into a Spidey 4 with the Lizard, ending with Eddie Brock getting the symbiote and becoming Venom, setting up Spidey 5 to be an all venom film.

You want a Spidey fan to handle the franchise he isn't going to ignore Spiderman's other villains just to touch on the popular ones. He wanted to make a roughly timescale accurate progression of Spiderman but Sony wanted Venom ASAP so that was that.

Oh, and Ryan Reynold is supposed to play Green Lantern. Chris Hemsworth (George Kirk from the new Star Trek) is going to play Thor too.
