BERLIN (AP) — Germans faced the cancellation of hundreds of flights Saturday as fresh snow blew in from the south, and Britons shivered through the country's longest cold snap in three decades as icy weather maintained its grip on Europe.
By early afternoon, 226 domestic and international flights had been canceled at Frankfurt airport as a strong low pressure system from the Mediterranean brought gusty winds and covered the country with several inches of snow. Crews struggled to clear the runways, and the few planes that managed to take off had to be deiced first, said Frankfurt airport duty manager Heinz Fass.

Schoenefeld and Tegel airports in Berlin, as well as Munich airport, also reported cancelations as snow turned cities and villages across the country into scenes from a fairy tale.

In Nuremberg, an Air Berlin plane slid off the runway and got stuck in the snow. Nobody was injured, but the airport was closed for more than two hours.

One meteorologist called the conditions Siberian. More than 300 car accidents were reported on icy streets in the southwestern state of Baden-Wuerttemberg; more than 40 people were injured. The western state of North Rhine-Westphalia reported 108 accidents.

Northeastern German was particularly hard hit. Wind whipped the snow into yard-high drifts along the Baltic coast, making roads impassable. Radio stations reported that several villages on the Baltic island of Ruegen were completely cut off.

On Fehrmarn, another Baltic island, farmers were being asked to use their farm machinery to help clear the roads, said Volker Kluetmann, an island official.

"The snow is so high that even the snow plows get stuck," Kluetmann said. "It's what you would call a real serious winter — and the winds here are the worst part of it."

In Berlin, even the mice were desperate escape the cold: Swarms of them have taken over the Bundestag, the country's parliament, the daily newspaper Bild reported.

In Britain, cold winds swept in from the north, sending temperatures tumbling to minus 7 degrees Fahrenheit in parts of Scotland and northern England. The country is in the midst of its longest cold snap in three decades, and transport has been disrupted across the country.

Heavy snow forced the cancellation of all flights at Dublin Airport in Ireland. Traffic at Heathrow Airport, Europe's busiest, was also affected, with British Airways alone canceling around 50 flights at the London hub.

The weather has been brutal by Britain's temperate standards, and local authorities across the country are running out of salt and sand. A clutch of sporting events has been canceled — including five of the seven scheduled Premier League soccer games scheduled for Saturday.

In Switzerland, Geneva airport remained open despite continued snowfall on Saturday, the main transit day for holiday-makers in nearby Chamonix and other French Alpine resorts.

Maybe the Gulf stream is really failing.

It would be nice to be able to trust the scientists.

Unfortunately, they are only a rung above polititians.

Well if the Gulf stream is failing......Europe would be the first contenent to feel its effect. But b/c Europe hasn't seen weather like this in over 30 years, the global climate change doubters could point to this very fact and say see....this happened 30 years ago and is only natural clilmate change.

I guess the entire world will know the gulf stream has failed when we have 6 foot snow drifts in India and the Phillipines. By then it will be too late b/c the new ICE AGE will have already arrived.:sunshine:

Yeah right.

The Philipines are going to be hit by 6' snow drifts now.

That's the problem, noone knows crap. Computer models are just that.

We could be headed in 2 direections.

Personally, I belive there is some man made global warming, but I'm not going to let the UN, China and India decide our fate.

This one guy the other scientists called a cook, can't remember his name, was on TV like 2 yrs ago? saying its not global warming, its an ice age we are going into. He seemed sort of cooky but that would be ironic if it wasn't global warming we were facing but an ice age.

no one is freaking. I think pointing out the cold is more a way to tell the global warming people to stop freaking out. If anyone is freaking out it's people who follow al gore and the new religion that is global warming.

pointing out a cold spell that hasnt happened in 10 + years to deny global warming ............... Hilarious! good plan

I'm not denying anything. I'm saying neither side has any idea what the weather will be like next winter. Next summer. 3 summer from now. 5 winters from now. Nothing. None of them IMO can say they have proven Earth will be warmer. Also no one can prove this winter cold spell means they are wrong about it.

All it means IMO is that both sides are arguing about things they can't prove.

So people can point to warming and say see? but when people point to it being really cold, or temps going down, they are just being stupid. LOL what a joke.

By the way China had temps lowest in 40 yrs. So add a few decades to your Wyoming math. Remember 1 cow, plus 1 sheep, = good time for all when it gets cold in Wyoming.

For the first time ever, the "Chunnel" - the tunnel dug underneath the sea that connects England with Europe - had to shut down because it froze. The air at the entrances was so cold that it froze the rail making it impossible for the train to get the traction needed to climb to the surface. Rescuers had to be sent down to rescue passengers stranded on the train and stuck in the tunnel.

My point is that it isn't just your typical winter. It is a record-breaking winter all across the hemisphere which should counter the lie that the earth is warming, much less than any warming is man-made.

That would only make sense. But what we should really be doing is a criminal investigation into those who dispute GW.

My dad who flew into Warsaw this past weekend had a hell of a time getting through Frankfurt on his way to Poland. Say's the people there haven't had this much sustained cold weather in a long time.

We've been hitting -20 up my way regularly. It's about 10 degrees out now and it feels like an f'in heat wave. No joke.
