Easiest route for Denver to make the playoffs is for us to win, obviously, and have Cincinnati beat the Jets and the Dolphins beat the Steelers.

If that happens the other games do not effect us what so ever. Because if Cincinnati wins, Pit wins, then we need Houston to beat New England. If not, the Steelers get the wildcard. The same goes if the Jets beat Cincinnati, the raiders beat the Ravens and Pit Beats Miami.

So we all should all route for the Dolphins on Sunday, because that is the simpliest way to get it done.

So in the early games on Sunday if you can watch one game, watch Pitt at Miami and keep an eye on the NE v Houston game.

Then while watching the Bronco game in the afternoon, keep an eye on Balt at Oak.

Because if the first set of games do not brake our way, then our only hope is that Oak beats the Ravens and then the Bengals win on Sunday night.

Am I wrong... or could we also just say..

-We need to win.

-2 of 3 teams need to lose of this group: Balt/NYJ/Pitt.

Isn't it that simple?

The most likely way (speaking strictly odds) is for NYJ and NE to lose - being that NE is an 8 point underdog.

The real key is for NYJ to lose, then we have a few likely ways to get in.

Can someone update me on why Cinci is resting their players when NE and Cinci are both 10-5?

If NE wins - they are not resting anyone.

If NE wins - they are not resting anyone.

It's the other way around. If NE wins, it is impossible for them to get the #3 seed, so they could treat this week like a bye. But if NE loses, they would take #3 with a win, and would likely play to win.

broncocalijohn

So have NE lose and make Cinci go for the win. Also, Raiders seem to beat the tuff teams and blow it to the crap. I wont say Raiders are a sure loss.

The scenario of Houston winning and Cinci winning seems to have the most complementary aspects to it. Houston winning would force Cinci to play at full throttle.

The reason Denver is the current #6 seed and yet needs help is that they must avoid a three-way tie with the Ravens and Steelers. If all three tie, Denver loses the tie-breaker on head-to-head. If Houston wins, they are 9-7 and, since they did not play any of the other 8-7 teams besides the Jets head-to-head, the H2H tiebreaker is likely gone and we move on to conference records where Denver is better positioned. In conference records, Pittsburgh and Houston are a game behind.

Pittsburgh will be rooting hard for a NE win because if Pittsburgh and Houston are left battling over the last seed, Houston will win because of a better record against common opponents (the Texans beat Cincy and Oakland while Pittsburgh lost to them three times).

Baltimore may be on the outside right now but they are perhaps the best positioned to win tiebreakers if it comes to that. The Jets, by odd logic, are the only team that simply clinches by winning.

Wrong...because if the one is Pitt...does us no good.

Actually it does because the Steelers head to head advantage over us goes out the window if there is a three way tie between us, Houston, and Pittsburgh.

Back to the original quote - if Pittsburg is the ONE that loses, we're still out of the playoffs. Baltimore and NYJ would be in.

This is one complex ass nutshell.

So, Houston winning only helps us because it forces Cincy to play hard... right? When I first read that Houston winning helps the Broncos I was confused, because the Pats have already clinched.

You know what, forget I asked. I really don't want to know at this point. I'll just root for the Broncos, root against all the teams they're tied with, and somebody will clue me in if they made it or not.

Here's what I found:
1. Denver win + Jets loss or tie + Baltimore loss or tie OR
2. Denver win + Jets loss or tie + Pittsburgh loss or tie OR
3. Denver win + Jets loss or tie + Houston win OR
4. Denver win + Baltimore loss or tie + Pittsburgh loss or tie OR
5. Denver win + Baltimore loss or tie + Houston win OR
6. Pittsburgh loss + Baltimore loss + Houston loss + Jacksonville loss or tie OR
7. Pittsburgh loss + Baltimore loss + Houston loss + Jets loss OR
8. Pittsburgh loss + Baltimore loss + Jacksonville loss or tie + Jets loss OR
9. Pittsburgh loss + Houston loss + Jacksonville loss or tie + Jets loss OR
10. Jets loss + Baltimore loss + Houston loss + Jacksonville loss or tie.

And, we want Houston to win to avoid a tie with Pitt or Balt because they beat us in head to head. A three way tie avoids the head to head!

Pittsburgh is going to beat Miami.

New England is going to beat Houston.

Cleveland is going to beat Jacksonville.

...so...where does that leave us?

Needing both Baltimore and New York to lose. If these scores hold, in fact, our game in meaningless. We would get in with a Balt and NY loss no matter what.

Looks like Houston can still make a game of it, though.

Well, in all honesty we dont really deserve to be in. When you lose to the Raiders at home with the playoffs on the line, then you really dont deserve much.

If the early scores hold up, then only No. 1 and No. 10 will get the Broncos in. So if the Broncos win or lose, it doesn't matter. Their game is meaningless. Because at this point, No. 1 and No. 10 are pretty much the same. It comes down to the Jets and Ravens losing.

Jason in LA
01-03-2010, 12:47 PM
Hold up, Houston came back, so No. 3 and No. 5 can still happen. If they pull it out, then No. 10 would not apply, and the Broncos would need to win today. But the Broncos would only need one team to lose, instead of two teams. That's a good trade off.

That's what it looks like. The Broncos need to win and one of those teams to lose, so I like their chances. Cincy will most likely go for the win to get the No. 3 seed, unless they feel they have a better chance against the Colts than the Chargers.

Jason in LA

The jacked up part is that if the Jets lose, the Ravens, Broncos, and Steelers would be in a three way tie, with the Steelers being left out, even though they beat the Broncos. That sucks... for them. lol
