Analysis: Broncos have rotten record in December games played in Kansas City
By Jeff Legwold
The Denver Post

Like most folks who deal with the ebb and flow of the coaching business, Broncos coach Josh McDaniels doesn't always like what the numbers have to say.

There are times when he will refer to statistics as "hollow."

But after a couple of days to put themselves back together after a 26-6 win over the Giants on Thanksgiving, the Broncos will spend the week staring in the face of one of the all-time statistical blips the franchise has to offer.

Because when it comes to the Broncos, the part of the calendar that has "December" stamped across the top and a game in Kansas City, their troubles have crossed decades, coaches and hundreds of players.

The Broncos are 1-16 in December games in Kansas City.

It hasn't mattered who they piled on the plane, it's all been pretty much the same. It hasn't mattered how they finished a regular season or how deep they went into the postseason.

It doesn't matter how good the Chiefs were or weren't. Since the Dallas Texans moved to Kansas City, none of it has mattered.

Good teams — like the 13-3 team in 2005, the 13-3 team in 1984, the 11-5 team in 1986 or the 11-5 team in 2000 — and bad teams, or teams in between, they all have made the trip from Denver to Kansas City, only to be disappointed in a maddening variety of ways. Dan Reeves, Mike Shanahan, Red Miller and John Ralston, and anyone else calling the shots, have tasted the pain, no matter how many wins or Super Bowl trips they eventually put on their résumés.

Even the two most successful coaches in Broncos history never solved the team's December riddle. Shanahan was 0-6 in December trips to Arrowhead Stadium with Denver and Reeves was 0-5.

The only breakthrough in Broncos history was coached by Wade Phillips, a 20-17 overtime victory on Dec. 4, 1994. That was the last win of his Denver tenure. That team lost its last three games of the season and Phillips was fired

I don't understand why Arrowhead is such a house of horrors for the Broncos in the month of December. I know the place is loud and a rivalry game can never be taken for granted, but what gives?

Now is the time to right all those December wrongs. Broncos need to sweep the chefs this year, there's just no getting around this fact.

No biggie, the win was great none the less. Its great to win in Arrowhead when it matters, like the month of January, I could care less about December.

Ya, last year. And we all remember how that panned out. And yes, I know that it wasnt in December. Nonetheless, it was a pounding. I dont expect to win this game no matter how poorly the mullets are playing.

Back in 2000, Denver was in the driver's seat to win the AFC West and a loss there in week 16 cost them the division. Tony Richardson ran all over Denver. I never take any division games for granted, especially on the road.

You always throw out the records in a rivalry game and come out swinging!

ya...well i didnt say its meaningless, because we need it for the playoffs, but my point was I dont care what our record at Arrowhead in December is, as long as we are winning there in January.

I just want this to be another thing Mcdaniels changes, I want him to come in to arrowhead kicking ass and taking names.

This game more than any other we have played this year is a game we can not afford to lose. If Orton stays mistake free and we don't kill ourselves with stupid fumbles and penalties we will win, this is ours for the taking.

The one thing I want to see is how Mcdaniels preps for Cassel, he may know Cassel better than any other coach in the league and I bet he knows what Cassel doesn't like. This game could get ugly either way.

Yup, big game this Sunday. Chiefs already beat the Stillers and we didnt, so its not going to be an easy game. They just got blown out by the Chuggers and are pissed. We need the get the running game going or we are done

Josh is 0-0 in Arrowhead as Denver's head coach and that is the only stat that matters.

He built Matt 'Sand' Cassel up....and he will know how to take him down.

This triumph was one of the most miraculous victories I remember. Kansas City had Denver on the ropes twice but Marcus Allen coughed up the ball in our territory and Shane Dronett blocked a Lin Elliott game-winning FG attempt.

Of all people, Hugh Millen drove us down the field to victory capped by a QB scramble down the sideline.

In the 1963 AFL Championship, San Diego defeated Boston 51-10.

That Chargers team was so formidable, many felt they could have beat the NFL Champion Chicago Bears that season.

Last title for Halas. Y.A. Tittle and the Giants would of beat the Chargers also. Tittle was chasing his first and only Championship. This one's for Yelberton Abraham!

We need this win because it's a division opponent. The problem is this game is their Super Bowl and they try harder in this game than any other. No excuses, though. We need to win and despite the horrible record we need to find a way. We'll see.

KC has always risen to the occassion at home to beat the Broncos. Playing KC at Arrowhead could mean the difference btwn Denver getting knocked out of the WC! Lets hope this isn't the scenario.

If you're a pro team, you shouldn't lose just because the other team tries. And they certainly aren't a pro team if they're not trying in the other games.

Our guys just need to go take care of business. If they can't win this game, they don't deserve to be in the playoffs.

McD will beat Polian just like Hoodie Sr.

He has a repectible D and KC is just horrible.

We have to be favored by at least 5.5.

All bets are off if The King twists his ankle.

No way we lose this.

This time, Hoodie Jr. will give him a bottle of Jack and shoot him up.

We have to take care of business vs. Oak and KC twice. Those are games we should win against lesser opponents. After that Indy and Philly are games that would be great to win, but not absolutely essential.

Going 10-6 gets us in
