Sources: Bates demoted by BucsComment Email Print Share By Adam Schefter

Continuing a tumultous year, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers changed defensive coordinators Monday night, demoting Jim Bates and handing over their defense to head coach Raheem Morris, according to sources close to the situation.

Before the regular season began, the Bucs fired then-offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski. Now they've made a change at defensive coordinator, with Morris taking control.

It now is a matter of time before Bates is let go.

Adam Schefter is an ESPN NFL Insider.

Nolan hasn't exactly produced anything here but retreads and a tired scheme.

Boy, I was wrong about Coyer.

QB's like Manning or Elway do wonders.

2007
In early January 2007, Bates was signed on by the Denver Broncos to replace Larry Coyer as the defensive coordinator. However, Defensive Backs coach Bob Slowik was promoted to the defensive coordinator position (nominal), and Bates was named "Assistant Head Coach/Defense." In the 2007 season, the Broncos defense went from 9th ranked in the league in scoring in 2006 to 29th in 2007 as of week 13. On January 8th, 2008 Bates announced he was leaving the Denver Broncos. You should blame Nolan for your defense being anything but far below average. You guys were terrible on defense and he came in and is IMHO the biggest reason for the wins you guys have (along with Dawkins). It is truly a coach of the year type effort. He was my first choice for our coordinator position (Jim Haslett was #2) and was not thrilled with naming Clancy as the DC. I am holding out hope that we will lure Wade Phillips to town to coordinate our d after his contract ends after this year and Shanny is brought into Dallas, which is how I see it playing out.

I think many Bronco fans severely underestimate how good of a coordinator Mike Nolan actually is. You literally have/had one of the worst defenses, talent wise, in the league and he is scheming them into a valuable unit. Without Nolan and Dawk, your defense would still be a bottom feeder.

Have you guys completely forgotten how terrible your defense was last year?

Schemes cant do it all and your front 7 isn't a good unit (contrary to the popular mane belief), opposing teams are finding out how to beat them and specifically how to beat their talent.

It will be an interesting offseason for you guys, Vonnie and Dawk arent gonna play forever and IMHO, you guys need to replace half of the front seven.

McBean
Ayers
Williams

Those are the only guys that will stick IMO and McBean is not a given.

Our defense has stopped applying pressure for some reason, teams have not found them out, they have stopped doing what helped win them 6 games. we rushed four people against Rivers on Sunday and didn't touch him, whereas in our first meeting we blitzed him with 5 and 6 man stunts all night. We have stopped being aggressive for some reason. We don't blitz anymore, keeping everybody in coverage and getting beat by the run and pass.

So I guess Shanahan wasn't wrong when he told Jim Bates he wasn't the DC anymore.

I noticed this too. Not sure if it was because LT was having some success early though? The SD offensive line was "supposedly" less healthy than in the first meeting. Weird.

Why are teams always undervaluing Coyer so much? Best D coach in the league so far.
Funny 2 times Bates is picked over Coyer and it turns out real bad. The Bucs should have hired Coyer as head coach.

I think we can all agree that letting Coyer go was one of the worst decisions Shanahan made.

Bates was horrible, slowik worse. I still staunchly defend Shanahan but those DC choices were indefensible.

We should bring in Mangini, Crennel, and Wies this off-season. With all those coaches teaching the Patriot way it could really speed up this rebuilding process. ;D

Coyer is good if he has good talent. He has two of the best DE's in the ENTIRE game on his team to cause pressure.

He also has the luxury of a potent offense with a HOF QB.

There was always one team that kicked Coyer's ass in Denver... and now he's with them. Kind of ironic.
