Armstrong: Gut check time for Broncos

Quarterback hurt. Check. Offensive line struggling. Check. Three-game losing streak. Check.

Add it all up? Gut Check.

Three weeks ago, there was peace in Dove Valley. Now? Not so much. A three-game losing streak will do that every time.

The Broncos' latest loss came Sunday against ... the Redskins? Yep, the Redskins. A team that had been mired in a four-game losing streak. A team that went into the game minus-8 in turnovers. A team whose offensive plays are called by Sherm Lewis, who one month ago was retired and barking out numbers at his local bingo parlor.

On the off chance you haven't figured it out, it's on now. After Denver's 27-17 loss to the 'Skins, the race in the AFC West is wide open. But the troubling part for the Broncos is how it got that way.

It's one thing to get manhandled by the Ravens and Steelers, two of the NFL's most physical teams. It's something altogether different to jump ahead of a thoroughly dysfunctional team, one playing without its starting tailback, and not be able to seal the deal.

After Monday night's loss to Pittsburgh, you had to wonder if or when the Broncos' offense would ever throw the ball more than 10 or 15 yards downfield. Josh McDaniels said two days later that, if a team had to rely on big plays in the passing game, "you're in trouble."

Uh-huh. Can you say smokescreen?

Kyle Orton came out throwing, and throwing deep, in this one. Two minutes into the game, Orton found a wide-open Brandon Marshall for a 40-yard score. Then, with about 4 minutes left in the first quarter, he unloaded a 75-yard touchdown pass, again to a wide-open Marshall.

The rest of the Broncos' highlights can be summed up in a 24-yard field goal by Matt Prater. By the time the second half rolled around, Orton has on the bench with an ankle injury and Chris Simms was running for his life behind an offensive line that last week underwent a changing of the guard on the left side, with Russ Hochstein replacing long-time starter Ben Hamilton.

There was no definitive news on Orton's condition, but if life with Simms is going to look like it did Sunday, the Broncos are in serious trouble. Denver didn't produce a single point in the final 30 minutes, and Simms threw an interception in the end zone on one of the few occasions when the Broncos showed some life.

The Redskins? They found the Broncos a perfect antidote to their long list of problems. Those 24 points they scored marked a season high. They went into the game minus-8 in turnovers, but didn't cough it up once against the Denver defense.

Special teams? Once again, they hurt the Broncos' cause as Washington punter Hunter Smith threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Mike Sellers off a fake field-goal attempt.

As they flew back to Denver Sunday night, the Broncos couldn't be sure if Orton would be able to play in Sunday's showdown with San Diego at Invesco Field. But they did know one thing: All that momentum from their 6-0 start is long gone, and they have to find a way to rediscover it.

Marshall was so wide open on those two passes because the Redskins to a page out of the Raven/Steeler game plans which was to stack the box because Denver ain't gong deep. We fooled them. If only we had done that in the Raven and Steeler games, those outcomes would probably be different. Going downfield opens everything up. Why we couldn't figure that out in those two games is beyond me.
