QUICKLY:

* The Broncos, who look to rebound from a 30-7 loss at Baltimore last week, will appear on Monday Night Football for the 61st time in club history. That total is the fifth highest in the history of the program.
* Head Coach Josh McDaniels guided Denver to a 6-0 record to begin the year, a start that tied for the third best by a rookie NFL head coach since 1930.

OFFENSE:

* QB Kyle Orton’s 18-2 (.900) career record at home as a starter is the best by an NFL player since the 1970 merger. He leads the AFC in TD-to-INT ratio (9-to-1), fourth quarter passer rating (124.2) and INT percentage (0.4).
* The Broncos’ 16 drives of at least 10 plays (20.8% of their possessions) tie for third in the NFL.

DEFENSE:

* Coached by long-time NFL defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, Denver leads the NFL in yards per game allowed (266.7) and yards per play allowed (4.4) while ranking second in the league in scoring defense (13.7 ppg.).
* Last week at Baltimore, the Broncos posted an NFL Week 8-best 10 tackles for a loss (31 yds.) with seven run stuffs, two sacks and one on a reception.
* OLB/DE Elvis Dumervil’s 10 sacks lead the AFC (2nd in NFL). Minnesota DE Jared Allen is the only player in the NFL with more two-sack games than Dumervil (11) since he entered the league in 2006.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

* The Broncos have won both AFC Special Teams Player of the Month awards this year with K Matt Prater (September) and WR/KR Eddie Royal (October) earning those accolades.
* Royal became only the 11th player in NFL history to score a touchdown on a kickoff (93 yds.) and a punt return (71 yds.) in the same game at San Diego on Oct. 19.
* S Darcel McBath, a rookie second round pick from Texas Tech University, leads the Broncos with seven special-teams tackles.

"It is about us doing what we do. We are not trying to match somebody. We are trying to be who we are. When you are trying to match somebody, to me, that is saying that they are a team that is above you, or you are trying to build up to them. We are who we are, and if we go out and do what we are supposed to do, we feel like we have a chance to win every game." – Brian Dawkins

""(Pittsburgh) is a very physical team in every phase. To me, that is where it starts with the Steelers. If you are going to get out-physicaled offensively, defensively (and) in the kicking game, you are going to have a hard time winning."–Josh McDaniels

"Every week in this league is a test, but when you are playing a team like Pittsburgh who has had the success that they've had-speaking for the offense, this has been a great defense probably for the last 30 years so nothing has changed. We are going to have to play physical, we are going to have to play smart and we are going to have to play our best game." –Kyle Orton

"I watched Pittsburgh a pretty good amount, They were an outstanding defense last year and they've been (that way) for a long time. . . . I still watch their film quite frequently to see what they're doing against an opponent because it serves us very well" -Mike Nolan

I just saw the Giants **** up the finale against the Chargers, so let's get this done! I'm worried about our running game, and I'm worried about their short passing game, but I think we might be able to pull this one out.

It's hardly a must-win in the grand scheme of record and playoff run, but it is a must-win by virtue of beating a good team, in primetime, after a loss. I think it will tell a lot about this team — if they can respond to adversity, and gameplan after a loss that will give the Steelers plenty of ideas on how to beat us.

We really want this.. bad.

Hoping for one in the future yes. I just want to see this team compete every week and grow as a team. I'm not looking to win a Super Bowl this year.

Don't get me wrong if the team earns the chance to play for a ring this year I'm there! I'm just looking at where this team came from, the offseason and where they currently are.

Five keys to the game for Denver

Posted by ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson

DENVER -- Here are five keys to Monday night’s game for Denver (6-1) against visiting Pittsburgh (5-2):

Start fast: If Denver has had a problem this season, it is starting slowly. It has had to rely on great second-half play. The second-half luck ran out in Baltimore in Week 8, but the Broncos must take pressure off of themselves and jump to a lead. It will be interesting to see how this team would react to not have to scramble back into games. Plus, there’s bound to be a lot of Pittsburgh fans at the game (the streets of Denver were teeming with folks in Steelers’ gear Sunday), so the Broncos must take the Steelers fans out of the game early. In the 2005 AFC Championship Game, the Steelers took early control of the game and their fans took over the stadium in a 34-17 Pittsburgh win. Denver can’t allow that to happen again.

Control the no-huddle offense: There has been talk that the Steelers will try to use more no-huddle to keep the Broncos off balance. The Ravens had great success using the no-huddle in Week 8. Denver has responded well to everything thrown at them this season, so if the Steelers come with the no-huddle, the Broncos have to be ready.

Take advantage of the Steelers' injury issues on defense: The Steelers may be without three key defensive starters because of health issues. Defensive end Travis Kirschke, inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons and safety Ryan Clark are all unlikely to play. The Broncos must take advantage and get their offense going against the limping Steelers. This is a great opportunity for the Broncos.

Run the ball: The Broncos must keep Pittsburgh’s defense honest by running the ball. Correll Buckhalter and rookie Knowshon Moreno have been a good tandem for most of the season. But the pair struggled at Baltimore. These two must establish the run to create an offensive rhythm. That will allow Denver quarterback Kyle Orton to play his game and be more effective than he was against the Ravens.

Tighten the special-teams coverage unit: Denver allowed a punt return for a touchdown against San Diego and a kick return for a score last week against Baltimore. It can’t surrender a special-teams touchdown for the third straight game. This game probably will be closely contested. Denver can’t give an excellent team such as Pittsburgh a freebie as it did the past two games.

AFC West, Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens, Kyle Orton, Correll Buckhalter, Lawrence Timmons, Knowshon Moreno, Ryan Clark, Pittsburgh Steelers, Travis Kirschke, Steelers-Broncos 110909, MNF 110909

Five keys to the game for Pittsburgh

November 9, 2009 11:03 AM
Posted by ESPN.com’s James Walker

Here are five keys to Monday night's game for the Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2) against the Denver Broncos (6-1):

Be physical: The Baltimore Ravens proved last week that Denver could be worn down by bigger, more physical teams. Pittsburgh’s personnel is very similar to Baltimore's, so the Broncos could struggle in many of the same areas. The Steelers need to set the tone early with their physicality. The Broncos are a "finesse" team, and as evident by their record, that works well for them. But oftentimes it takes a while for teams outside the AFC North to adjust to the smashmouth brand that is played within the division. Pittsburgh needs to take advantage of that, especially on the road.

Play smart defense: For a 6-1 team, Denver's offense can be relatively easy to stop. It takes a smart defense that won't be fooled by the various screens and quick-hitting misdirections. Stopping the run will be the first focal point. After that, Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton likely will struggle trying to beat teams singlehandedly through the air. Denver is very gun shy when it comes to attacking opponents vertically with Orton under center. Therefore, look for Pittsburgh to bring many defenders closer to the line of scrimmage to challenge Denver's hesitancy to go deep.

Big game from Troy: Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu recently returned to the team following a left knee injury he suffered in the season opener. Although he’s made some plays, Polamalu still hasn’t looked 100 percent. The dynamic safety had two additional weeks off to rest the knee. With veteran safety Ryan Clark not expected to play, that puts an even greater emphasis on Polamalu controlling the middle of the field for Pittsburgh.

Ball security: Lately the Steelers haven’t been taking care of the football, and it’s hard to tell if this is just a small issue or a growing trend this season. Pittsburgh fumbled the ball five times (losing four) in its past two games. It didn’t hurt the Steelers in home wins over the Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings. But careless turnovers Monday could hurt the Steelers a lot more on the road against Denver. Pittsburgh second-year tailback Rashard Mendenhall has lost two fumbles in two games.

Use new wrinkles: In the past, the Steelers would bring out a trick play or two later in the regular season. That hasn’t been the case as much under current offensive coordinator Bruce Arians. But coming off a bye week, this would be a great time to catch a good opponent off guard on both sides of the football. Pittsburgh ran a tailback pass by Mewelde Moore earlier in the season that worked for a touchdown. The Steelers shouldn’t get too giddy with trick plays, but perhaps a couple of new wrinkles would help. Defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau also is known to constantly draw up new packages. So, don’t be surprised if you see something new from the defense as well.

CHFF:

Pittsburgh-Denver: the AFC showdown
Cold, Hard Football Facts November 9, 2009

We promised to publish our Monday Night Football pick on Monday, rather than on Friday, which we normally do. Blame our affinity for the Penn State ladies. However, we didn't mean for it to be so late. We've already got a bunch of emails from angry Trolls looking for the pick. We'd apologize for the delay, if we cared for your feelings.

In any case, here's our fact-filled look at the game. For an onslaught of hype rather than data, might we suggest a fine bottle of the ESPN pregame show tonight?

As noted earlier Monday, we're 7-5 ATS here in Week 9 and 71-57 for the year. We've also nailed, almost to the exact point margin, the winners in six of 12 games Sunday. Regardless of what happens tonight, we'll post a winning slate for the seventh time in nine weeks this year.

Pittsburgh (-2.5) at Denver
The Steelers return from their bye with four straight wins, a 5-2 record and one of the most prolific passers in the league – Big Ben is fifth in passer rating (102.6) and No. 1 in passing YPA (a very impressive 8.8 YPA).

But they also have the feeling of a team that just quite hasn’t found its groove yet, either.

The Broncos, meanwhile, boast one of the best records in the NFL (6-1), they’re a league-leading 4-0 against Quality Teams, and they’re high on the list in many key indicators – including a No. 1 spot in our all-important Defensive Hog Index. But they also have the feel of a team that’s watching it all unravel real fast.

In the case of the Steelers, they’re lack of grooveness is based on the fact that they’re yet to really put anybody away, even the bad teams. In the case of the Broncos, their doom-and-gloom feel is the result of one big loss last week at Baltimore and the fact that the defense has grown worse each week for more than a month. Since Week 3, Denver has surrendered, in order, 3, 10, 17, 23 and 30 points.

So each team has some questions they need to answer Monday night.

You know we really love the Steelers and big-play magician Big Ben. We generally like the Steelers in big games. But you also know that the 6-1 Broncos have been underdogs against every team they’ve played this year, with the exception of the woeful Browns. They’ve managed to win five those six games in which the other team was favored and they covered the spread every week except for the Baltimore game.

So we don’t want to bail on the Broncos after just one loss. Plus, statistically speaking, the Broncos still have some of the best Defensive Hogs in the business: they’re No. 2 against the run, and No. 2 in forcing Negative Pass Plays.

Both those advantages will come in handy against a team that struggles to run the ball and that makes a lot of mistakes in the passing game ( Pittsburgh is No. 20 in the percentage of Negative Pass Plays that it commits on offense). This week, at least, the Steelers will make one more mistake in the passing game than they should have and it will cost them the game.

Denver 23, Pittsburgh 20

I'm have a hunch that we throw the ball 40+ times tonight, and not because we are trying to come back. I'm guessing that McD has an extremely new/agressive game plan for the offense.

I also think that we're going to blitz the living **** out of Big Ben.

The defense has gotten worse every week since week three?

Gave 3 to the Raiders, 10 to the Cowboys, 17 to the Patriots, 16 and a kick return to the Chargers, and 6 and a kick return through three quarters against the Ravens and then another 7 in garbage time.

Do we have to shut people out every week or was it actually expected we wouldn't allow more than six points a game all year?

I think it is most crucial to win the home games. The Broncos are the perfect team to make use of the 'wear down' factor the thin air gives us. Got to capitalize on that advantage.

I think Jaws said it best..

So far this year, the Steelers' defense has faced 73 drives by opponents, and only 11 have gone for more than 10 plays. The Steelers know how to get off the field, plain and simple. If the Broncos try to grind it out with the kind of short passes they've favored this season, it could be a long night.

WE need to air it out some tonight. We are 19th in the league for passes over 20 yards. If we play a short game plan all night, it's going to be another long one. Steelers will do exactly what Baltimore did.

I think we adjust and win this with a score of say... 24 to 13.

Now, this is why I don't like having Orton. Not because he throws stupid passes, because he hasn't so far this season. But because, unless our D is perfect in the second half, we are likely not going to make up huge deficits. We HAVE to score points on this next posession now.

Moreno got it by the NT and then knocked off his route again by the f'ing ref

Borderline illegal contact. I would have called it :)

We are not creating any holes in the run game.

Punch to the head on Orton on the graham catch over the middle. No call. they are letting them play.

Take away the pick and we're dominating this game.

150 yards gained for us, 30 for them.

Encouraged how we're moving the ball for the most part.

Doesn't matter that the Steelers have been sliding hands up into our receivers helmets to tackle them, and that their OL are bear hugging our DL and LBs, we get the first penalty on the game because Hochstein might have rocked a little.

atomicbloke

its a completion and a fumble out of bounds..... he had possession and was then stripped off the ball...

Drek

Had possession and took two steps as he was tackled, should be a catch. I guarantee if that was in bounds and the Steelers scooped it up they'd call it a fumble.

No ****...it's crazy. It's all fun and games until someone breaks their neck.

Kyle Orton cannot throw the ball deep. McDaniels is aware of that. The rest of the NFL is taking note.

Looked incomplete to me. You have to catch it all the way through after hitting the dirt. We'll see....

I think its a catch and fumble. He had it longer than Kno did last week
