Ward, Porter, Haynesworth called NFL's dirtiest

Posted by Michael David Smith on November 3, 2009 2:23 PM ET

A Sports Illustrated poll of NFL players has found that Hines Ward is considered by his colleagues to be the dirtiest player in the league, with Albert Haynesworth and Joey Porter tied for second.

The question, "Who is the dirtiest player in the league?'' was asked of 296 players during training camp this summer, and Ward, the Steelers' wide receiver, got 11.6 percent of the vote, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Haynesworth, the Redskins defensive tackle who as a Tennessee Titan in 2006 received a five-game suspension for stepping on the helmetless head of Cowboys center Andre Gurode, got 6 percent of the vote. Porter, the Dolphins' linebacker, also got 6 percent.

Rounding out the Top 5 (or should it be Bottom 5?) are Bengals safety Roy Williams, who got 5.1 percent of the vote, and Titans center Kevin Mawae, with 4.6% percent.

And give me some Brandon Spikes and Lagarette Blount to keep traditions going!

Those would be 5 solid players.

Urban Meyer should have suspended Spikes for the rest of the season for the eye gouging. That could blind a guy for life. It has no place in football. Just wrong.

You think that doesn't happen at the bottom of a scrum? It happens in every game...

People seem to have never made a big deal about Wilfork doing that to Brandon Jacobs a year or two ago. To me, it's a big deal. Hard to make a living playing football without your eyesight.

Hines Ward is a great guy off the field, on the field he plays hard and give it all for his team. Most of the votes are due to the blindside block on River and how agressive Hines blocks on running plays.

The guy just plays, he goes over the middle and takes punishment from the same guys he blocks.

-----

Haynesworth... will he did step on the cowboys player head a few years back.

--------

Joey Porter hmmmm Joey play's the verbal mind game just as good as Romo,Sharpe, Lewis. But yes Porter is a a huge A-hole.

Would Tom Nalen have made the list during his playing days?

Easily, but he did it super stealth mode and was never in the media about it.

ward, i can't see. i think defensive players who voted have either been jacked up by hines or find the idea of an offensive player with a defensive mindset utterly frightening. ward is one who i'd point to as playing the game the right way.

haynesworth has a record of dirty, cheap play. porter as well, though he usually limits it to casinos and on closed circuit TV. these two are punks, straight up. ward is not.

i agree completely. Ward isn't dirty, he just plays all out every play and is very physical. i would gladly welcome him in Denver. his style of play although a little more physical reminds me a bit of Rod Smith.

Hines Ward is my least favorite player in the league. I hate that **** eating grin of his every time he blows someone up. Gotta respect the way he plays but just can't stand that goofy smile of his. Would love him if I was a Steeler fan though.

They should allow all players to wear a visor if they wanted to.
