Via the official Denver Broncos Twitter, “The NFL will name Eddie Royal as the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for October.”

What a great honor for a special player. On Monday night in week 6, Eddie was instrumental in completing a 3-phase total team effort for a win over the San Diego Chargers by taking a kickoff return 93 yards and a punt return 71 yards for touchdowns.

Although he wasn’t utilized as much as a receiver in the game, he absolutely made a difference and is showing why the Broncos were so high on him out of college in 2008. This is the first time in team history that they have had 2 players named AFC special teams player of the month in the same season. In September, kicker Matt Prater was given the honor.

Of the month? I'll take it, but he just had 1 awesome game, nothing else really special.

Interesting we have swept the ST of the month awards this season yet our ST is the weakest unit of the three.

Royal, Eddie (WR)

Royal became the first player in Broncos history to return a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns in the same game, leading undefeated Denver to a34-23 win over San Diego on Monday night. Royal is the 11th player in NFL history to return a kickoff and a punt for a touchdown in a game.

I was just thinking this same thing... At least they're doing something, though. More than we can say in year's past.

Congrats to Eddie, but he may not even be the best special teams player on the team. Paxton has been firing bullets.

Yeah I agree with this. His one game was historic, so maybe they are trying to recognize that, or something.

Well, it's not like any other NFL player did much in the way of special teams play. That sort of thing is going to win every time.

True, but no one in the league did anything really special all month and Royal did something that only 10 other people had done in the history of the game.

He should have, but I bet they gave it to Sharper.

Sharper's playing so well that he won the AFC DPOTM from New Orleans?

Jesus, that's gotta be a record...

Because when else would anyone have an occasion to use that emoticon? I don't even know what the hell it means.

James Harrison won it with 7 sacks, 2 FF, 1 FR, 25 tackles in 4 games.

that is going to be interesting at the season if both Doom and Sharper continue on the pace they are currently at. Who do you give the DPOY award to? it is very similar to the Champ and Jason Taylor debate from a few years ago. This year we have the Jason Taylor in the equation, but we are also the Broncos and get no respect from the media.

The NFL loves Sproles and the Chargers much more than anyone on the Broncos. If the returns weren't so historic, I wouldn't be surprised to see Eddie passed over for it.
