Breaking: Reid Moving Forward With Public Option With Opt Out — With White House’s Support
At a presser in the Capitol just now, Harry Reid offered a striking revelation that sharply contradicts much of the conventional wisdom we’ve heard:
He said that the White House supports the public option with the opt out — despite all the reporting we’ve heard to the effect that the White House supposedly prefers the trigger.
Reid said clearly he’s moving forward with a Senate bill with the opt out in it, “with the support of the White House, and Senators Dodd and Baucus.”
“I believe there’s a strong consensus to move forward in this direction,” Reid said. Interestingly, Reid also said he won’t even be sending a bill with a trigger in it to the Congressional Budget Office for scoring. And he said he was moving forward on the opt out in the full knowledge that Olympia Snowe won’t support it. A fascinating development.
More soon.
Update: Chuck Schumer, who deserves as much credit as anyone else for this latest turn of events, weighs in with a statement:
“Leader Reid has always been a strong supporter of a public option that could help keep the insurers honest, and today he showed just how deep his commitment is. The public option has new life because as Americans have learned more about it, they have come to see it is the best way to reduce costs and increase competition in the health insurance industry. This form of public option is not exactly what either liberals or moderates would want. But a public plan based on a level playing field, with an opt-out for states, is the best compromise that has the potential of getting 60 votes in the Senate.”
Update: Here’s the full quote from Reid on the White House’s support for the opt out:
“As we’ve gone through this process, I’ve concluded, with the support of the White House and Senators Baucus and Dodd, that the best way forward is to include a public option with an opt-out provision for states.”
Update: The White House, in a new statement, reaffirms its support for the public option — with the opt out (http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/health-care/white-house-reaffirms-support-for-public-option-with-opt-out/).

Thanks for the link to the thread I started back in the middle of September. It's great to see how accurate I was there when the entire political universe was declaring it dead. Also goes to show how rightarded the MSM is.
This guy is gone come election time, unless Acorn can create 100,000 cartoon characters...
The opt-out part is really pretty funny. Your state can opt out of the services but they still have to pay the taxes. These guys and their love of word manipulation is just getting laughable. Consumer option. Good Lord.
(If that last sentence fragment offends you because it contains the word Lord please forgive me.)
But the Republicans need to crystalize their message in a few brief bullet points and select one bill, not 5 or 10, that they can point to as their counter proposal or they will lose this battle.
- no public option
- can't refuse people for pre-existing conditions
- all residents must pay for a bare minimum of health insurance
- create real nationwide competition among providers
- get rid of the anti-trust exemption
Done. Then move on to the next problem.

Not only that but Acorn is going to have to figure out how to make cartoon characters appear out of thin air & actually vote.:wiggle:
Reelection?! If GWBS can get reelected having sent 1,000s of soldiers to their deaths in a unjust war(Iraq), Then i'm sure Obama can get reelected for health care reform.
Just cause a small group of people can scream real loud doesn't mean they have the votes to elect who they want.

"Your state can opt out of the services but they still have to pay the taxes."
That's the thing that gets me right there. What a joke.

Thats how this whole thing will work...get your foot in and destroy -- it doesnt matter what form it takes, a public option is the Trojan horse that will be used to pring down the private system -- which is what Obama said in his PBS interview (about 2001) when he stated that the public option would be around for about 10 - 15 years before it could drive the private option out of healthcare.
There are Dems who are Americans (most) who have compassion, and think government should have a big role to play -- and there are now "Dems" (usually under 25) who think government is the only thing that should be allowed to influence our lives -- and should have moved to the USSR before it fell, to learn that such systems of governments are only cool when displayed on T-shirts and logos, but suck in real life...

Sounds like a great plan to get the idiot red-neck states on board.

If the final bill has a trigger free P.O., he'll be re-elected. If not, he won't be (and shouldn't be).

All citizens must buy insurance from private corporations? Seems to **** the people and benefit the corporations, ehh?
The public option btw, is self sustaining from the premiums payed into it. I believe the bill has written into it, outside of start up costs, that the option can't take any tax dollars. If there are taxes in either bill, they would be for subsides.
