Wow Ink, you got it first. Nice job.

So, what do we think? Is this a huge upgrade, or a stop-gap maneuver until we can solidify the position further?

Wow. McDaniels gives players a very small margin of error (see Hillis). Can't really complain with the results.

Not a big surprise, hopefully Berger can be an improvement.

Kern more or less sucked. His punts from deep inside our half were too low and returnable, and his punts from around midfield ended up as touchbacks far too often.

The Broncos have signed NFL veteran and former University of Colorado punter Mitch Berger, who replaces Brett Kern.
The Broncos have yet to formally announce the move, but Berger’s name plate is above the locker that until recently belonged to Kern.
It appears the Broncos were unhappy with Kern’s tendency to boot long, but low-trajectory punts that were ideal for returning. San Diego’s Darren Sproles returned a punt for a touchdown last Monday night.

This can only mean that ST coach has asked Kern to punt ball to a spot and he fails. He hasn't been that bad really so a move can only mean that he isn't punting the ball in the areas the coverage set up for. Or not as high as they would like etc etc.

Risky move this far into season.

Prater does well

Prater is 12 for 16 on FGs. and 2 of the misses have been in the 30-39 range. he's tied for 20th in FG %. there are only 7 kickers with a worse FG %. Prater and Scobee (JAX) are the only kickers to have missed 4 FG so far this year. nobody else has more than 3 misses.

that's a problem.

I think in a couple of games when we punted for field position he would put it in the end zone. It just didn't bounce in either, our field team had no chance to down the punt.

Kern seemed okay, but the art of "coffin corner" kicking seemed to be something he just couldn't manage. Had tremendous distance at times, but always seemed to give up too much return yardage. If he wasn't putting it where the defense was told, it screws up our coverage units.

As said...if McD says he needed to go he goes. He keeps trying to make this team better, in all phases.

I'm surprised that they didn't bring back Colquitt though.

kerns leg strength is not in question, why did he get fired, punts inside the 20, pinning teams deep, how many touchbacks? accuracy matters, one good punt inside the 10 can win a game.

hopefully Berger is better at controlling his punts. Kern had a hell of a leg but he wasn't very good at dropping the ball inside the 10 when given the opportunity, he was consistently outkicking his coverage units and bombing kicks into the end zone. i liked him, but this may be an upgrade.

Both of the 30-39 yard misses came in really bad winds against Cleveland, too. He's also come up huge in 2 wins... Against Cinci and New England.

I'm really pleased with Prater this year. He's young, and it definitely takes kickers some time to find their groove. I'm hopeful that patience with him will be rewarded.

Special Teams player for September..'nuff said! And the two misses were in 40 mph cross winds! Kern had a great leg and unlike most punters was a willing and capable tackler. Berger sucks and has neither. You can coach technique to a talented player you can't coach in talent! My blame goes to ST coaching and the lack there of.

Berger also has experience as a holder on kicks, so that's probably a reason why he was picked instead of another punter who maybe has never been a holder before since that had also been Kern's job.

Huh? Up until this past game against SD, he was among the league leaders in touchbacks and kicks into the EZ. One game at sea level, where even Kaeding (who can nail 50+ yarders with ease) can't hit the EZ, isn't a problem.

Mitch Berger's punting made me want to kill kittens!!! WTF were THEY thinking???

Hilarious!

Mr. Elway
10-26-2009, 02:46 PM
Far be it from me to remind anyone that rampant speculation and negativity can lead to embarrassing moments later, because when was the last time that happened? However I think we should wait and see how the new punter does before we assume McDaniels randomly flew into a rage over the Sproles TD and irrationally hired the first punter off the street.

Here are some interesting things I found about Berger:

Played at CU at the same time Matt Russell, our Director of Scouting, played there.
Is known as a great tackler, having accued 5 tackles in 2008 with the Steelers, including two touchdown-saving tackles
Was injured (hamstring) during his recent tenure with the Steelers, which is most likely why he "sucked" there

Obviously Kern has had some issues, and the TD return last week was probably the last straw, not the first. We know McDaniels is no fool when it comes to evaluating personnel, and I am sure he had Berger hold some snaps and kick a few punts before hiring him as the punter. I am also sure there is a very good reason why we went with Berger over Colquitt. If McDaniels and the coaching staff did not expect immediate improvement in the position, I am reasonably confident they would have kept Kern or hired someone else to punt.

yes! He played for their semi pro team while waiting for a NFL team to call. Sad thing is he got hooked on meth, gambling and starting fights with wayward truck drivers. He did like the blue lake, though.

Just goes to show , you really dont know someone until you find out if they like New Town ND or not ................ Boo Berger

One word of advice ... I do not think the Broncos should allow Orton and Berger to be road roommates:

I just googled him, I didn't know Berger's a Canadian! Fear not everyone! The last BC boy on the team won 2 Super Bowls :D

I must ask him about healthcare :D

the coaches really haven't made a bad move yet concerning personnel. I'm going to ask again, can we at least wait and see how he does before we say this move sucks?

ok.

I've learned my lesson..... If McDaniel's thinks we need a different punter then "we need a different punter"

The "McDonald" has "Trumped" every expert so far, it's a minor move, but it seems rash, considering Sproles is like Hester or Harvin or Royal.

That said, there is an argument regarding outkicking your coverage.

This is something thats obviously been on their mind a while. Remember a few weeks ago they brought in a few punters (including Colquitt again).
