I just finished watching the ESPN 30for30 film "The two Escobars" which was the story of the Columbian National team of the early 90's and Drug Lord Pablo Escobar. Fantastic. Phenomenally well done. I remember watching that team in their prime. Specifically their 5-0 win over Argentina, in Argentina. to automatically qualify for the Cup held in the US that year. I also remember Andres Escobar scoring the own goal that won the game for us and as happy as I was for the US, feeling terrible for Andres. This was well worth watching and is available at http://30for30.espn.com/ for those that can't get it on the TV. It will be re-aired on 6/30 at 11:00 PM EDT. Can't wait for tomorrow morning. Get em, Yanks. Go through with a quality win after scoring the first goal this time:wiggle:

Argentina v. Mexico match is going to be a good one.

Potential highlight match of the next round, up there with Spain v. Brazil/Portugal.

The next round is chock full of awesome games.

USA/England/Slovenia vs. Germany/Ghana/Serbia...I see this one working out as US vs. Serbia and Germany vs. England. How are those for second round matchups? Germany/England is an instant classic. US/Serbia is a great matchup.

Andres Escobar is one of the most tragic figures in sports history. So sad.

See the thing about the French coach refusing to shake hands with the South Africa manager after the French world cup cluster**** came to a merciful end? Apparently upset about comments made before the Cup about Ireland deserving to be there more (which, it is now painfully apparent, couldn't be more true).

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/EDrq1SM9f_o&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/EDrq1SM9f_o&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Anyway, looked like a total clown shaking his head refusing to show any sportsmanship. I've never seen an entire highly touted national team, from the top down, make themselves such a mockery on a global scale. The whole of Europe and America love the chance to poke fun at the French, and this has just made it too easy.

Here's a beautiful writeup:

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hM3MZBbpzZ1gY3A4aScBx5NZ429wD9GGJ3F80

BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa The referee waved a red card at the French player, ejecting him from the game for a nasty, elbow foul. His coach buried his head in his hands.

Soon after, South Africa put the French out of their misery with a 2-1 victory, and France's World Cup humiliation was complete.

Seen as undeserving competitors even before the tournament began, France is going home early winless and the laughingstock of the soccer world.

They were eliminated Tuesday by South Africa, which became the first World Cup host in 80 years to fail to advance from the first round but ended with a win that at least gave its fans some measure of joy.

Even in Paris, fans who gathered near the Eiffel Tower to watch the match on video screens booed their own team and cheered for South Africa.

In November, France made it to the World Cup over Ireland when a referee failed to see Thierry Henry double-slap a ball before teammate William Gallas scored. With no video replay, soccer fans around the world complained that France had made it to the sport's biggest stage by cheating.

...

"I'm sickened, disgusted," said Alain Le Prince, in a crowd of thousands who watched the match in Paris. "Everyone is laughing at us."

The crowd cheered loudly when France's Florent Malouda scored the team's only goal. But people had also cheered when Gourcuff was expelled, and there was loud applause mixed with gasps each time South Africa scored.

"It's funny. France is worthless," said Victor Malamoud, a 17-year-old Parisian, explaining his cheers for South Africa. Like others, he said he had come to "see the match, watch Les Bleus and hope."

This French team is literally the biggest joke I have ever seen in international soccer. You look at the talent over there and you just wonder how they can be such miserable human beings...one of those jackasses was among a group of players that blackballed Landon Donovan at Beyern and he's the same jackass that shacked up with underage girls.

So much talent, so many quitters.

England v. Germany would be a good game as well, but nobody outside the US or Serbia will care too much about that potential matchup.

Almost feel bad for Slovenia though, they've had a wonderful tournament, but I don't think they will advance.

Ribery blackballed Donovan? What happened?

They literally wouldnt pass him the ball. Juergen Klinsmann talked about it right before the cup started. He said that Luca Toni, Ribery, Klose, and Podolski all blackballed Donovan because Klinsmann was going to start Landon. He was literally ahead of Podolski on the depth chart, and that didnt sit well with ownership because Podolski is German. Seriously. That's how petty things can be in those teams. Some of those players are divas.

Landon played well in exhibitions and moved up the depth chart. His moving ahead of Podolski was part of the reason Klinsmann was fired.

An England win and a US win eliminates Slovenia. Depending on goal differential, US would qualify with the 1 seed, England the 2 seed.

I hope you're talking about his last stint in Germany with Bayern Munich, not his initial German tenure at Bayer Leverkusen. Donovan was owned by Leverkusen from 1999 - 2004, during which he was loaned out the MLS.

He was only at FC Bayern for a ~6 month loan after deciding to go over and train with them during the MLS off-season, similar to his latest deal with Everton.

Obvioulsy things didn't work out for Donovan in Germany, regardless of club. Although I'd be loathe to chalk it all up to some conspiracy "hate the American" type thing.

Klinsmann didn't really say anything when he talked about it. He just kind of mentioned that Donovan had a tough time in Germany and wasn't able to adjust. And considering Klinsman was fired when ownership became concerned that the team wouldn't qualify for Euorpe for the following season, I cannot see why they wouldn't want the best players on the field giving them the best chance to win.

No.

Klinsmann specifically addressed the situation and gave the exact information that I paraphrased. It was his account. Look it up. He got raked over the coals for moving Landon onto the squad.

Germany is a notorious league for deferring to home grown players.

Do you have a link to the transcript? Only thing I've heard him say was just what I said above. I'd be interested to see if that is really his account of the situation. Although I'd still be wary of Klinsmann being somewhat biased, considering he wasn't successful in his 1 season as manager.

Regardless, I don't buy that Donovan didn't make it in Germany because he was blackballed and I think it's pretty misleading to catorgize his entire German stint by a short term loan deal with Munich.

ThisLOL! I caught soooo much grief from my English friends and co-workers over our collapse in the last cup, it would be pretty funny for me if England fails to advance. Perfect day for me would be a USA win (4-1) with a Slovenia/England tie (2-2). Couple this with a Ghana win over Germany (2-1), and just for fun and to see a huge upset a win by Australia over Serbia (1-0 although a win by Serbia is more likely and results in Germany going out if they tie of lose and Serbia wins). I would fall over laughing if both England and Germany were out of it at the end of the day.

And? The South Americans have proven so far to be the class of the field. I would caution against taking anything for granted in the cup. Argentina hasn't faced anyone who can defend them well. That will not be the case in the elimination rounds. That will be when we see if Maradona can coach his team through. Doesn't mean he won't, just a matter of nobody knows yet how Argentina will react if down or challenged.

Yeah, the defense is watching the game rather than playing and it pisses me off. The U.S needs to go pay and forge documents to get better players on this team. MLS Players are not meant for the world stage, start handing out green cards!

US looks good when they don't bypass the midfield. However we have a HUGE problem winning the ball back in the midfield. Once Algeria gets possession, it either ends in a goal opportunity or a goal kick. US has to work harder to win the ball back in the midfield, period.

The dissallowed goal, yeah, wtf once again. Could have even been a penalty for the foul on Bradley. Tough break again.

Cherundolo looks good coming forward like always, but DeMerit is looking pretty shaky in the back with 2 big errors that could have been goals for Algeria.

Donovan and Dempsey looking more involved which is good. Would still like to see Holden come in for Edu (move Donovan in the middle and put Stuart on the wing). Would be a much more aggresive lineup, and frankly, that's what we need atm. Holden brings a lot of energy and has tons of confidence.

Hopefully England goes down (doesn't look like it) and the US can find the net. Whatever it is, the last two halves of US soccer I have seen have been some of the best performances I have ever seen our national side have.

We've had 2 that absolutely, 99% of the time would be goals. I'm not sure they need to mess with that at this point. If by the 70 minute mark nothing has changed, then put it all on the line.

The coach's attention needs to be on the back 4 at the half.

The more these things happen, the more I wonder. That's two goals and the faceball on Findley, at least. There was also a very questionable tackle in the box in the Slovenia game. I think maybe FIFA has to err on the side of caution to not appear to give the US the favorable calls. So much is centered around the US in the world, they want to keep this a other country thing. My only explanation.

England almost scoring already. Really don't expect Slovenia to bail us out.

We've had 2 that absolutely, 99% of the time would be goals. I'm not sure they need to mess with that at this point. If by the 70 minute mark nothing has changed, then put it all on the line.

The coach's attention needs to be on the back 4 at the half.

There's no one to bring on for the back 4. Bob needs to make an offensive sub and go for the win. Playing 2 DMC's isn't going to cut it.

Well the issue isn't the player so much as the play. The crossbar shot was due to a defender whiff. How do you completely whiff on a slow ball at this level?

Cmac821
06-23-2010, 09:04 AM
Not complaining. Just pointing out that Bornstein is the only guy in the back 4 that plays for MLS.

The reason he's been "solid" is because Algeria has avoided his side. He's a horrible player not cut out for the international level. I can just hope that Algeria keeps avoiding him.

Sounds like someone is anti semitic ROFL! (the irony)ROFL!

I was only halfway watching. They didn't seem to go out of their to make something happen. Maybe England was just doing better holding the ball but the play was constantly near Slovenia's goal at the end, it seemed.

And I have to admit, I was complaining a lot about how Algeria seemed content to just take the US down with them but at the end, they only had 2 defenders back. They just waited until like the 80th minute to actually try anything.

Yeah, give it a rest At. I'm sitting here trying to get the tears to stop. Didn't hit me until a couple min. ago catching up on the last 2.5 pages of this thread. You have to respect the resiliency of this squad. Dempsey played a gutsy match. Demerit played his ass off as well. FIFA has to breathging a major sigh of relief. If that disallowed goal would have kept us out? Two games strait? It would have been horrible for them as they are more than a little keen to see the U$ become a player at the top just for the revenue stream. Wow....I'm gassed. Soccer's a game of matchups, so it really depends on who we draw--most likely Germany or Ghana, I believe. The US style is counter-attacking with speed and brute force, rather than precision ball control or tactical innovation. From what I've seen of Ghana, they play a similar style as the US, with emphasis on speed and outrunning the opposition. Germany, on the other hand, is tactically excellent with lots of size, meaning they win in the air. They attack quickly and possess the ball for large chunks of time. This seems to spell trouble for US backs who really aren't capable of packing it in and playing frustrating, close-out defense for 90 minutes.

If it turns out to be Serbia, I think we can run by 'em like Ghana did. Their back line is also in danger of missing the next round with yellows, so a chippy game today may help us out if we face them next round.

Gimme Ghana and i'll take my chances with our horses vs. theirs.

It's essentially guarranteed to be Serbia unless Australia pulls the upset. Germany would have the tiebreaker on GD if they win and Ghana would have a tie rather than a loss if they win. If Germany Ghana tie then we get Ghana but that's the only way other than a Aussie win.

Gutsy team, Gutsy win. As for Harkes and Lalas, they had more than their fail share of gacks on this stage as well. It is telling that both of them have admitted to regrets about the approach/attitude of the cup teams/themselves they were a part of and would do things differently if they could go back as they had the talent to achieve more than they did. I felt that way about them then, and it chafes a bit to listen to the comments about current players at times. I feel they both have the same issue many former jocks in broadcasting suffer from-the fear that they won't be taken seriously unless they are "harsh" on the current players in order to appear unbiased. USA > England!

In their defense, they also were in a win or go home situation and they put up. We should've won two games so I'll agree with your assessment but I do think the two best teams are going forth. England USA are almost interchangeable with the difference being that England has more talent but seemingly less heart while USA is less talented but made up for it with effort at the end.

I hope Gooch sits the bench the rest of the Cup. He is not fit to play. I hate to say it, but an injured Gooch is not better than a healthy Bornstein.

And our midfielders and forwards all did well. Great passing, so many good opportunities, and a relentless attack. I thought I was watching a powerhouse team like Argentina or Brazil there for a second. You could almost feel that it was a question of when and not if we would score.

She said every tv in her work (building has probably 40 offices) seemed to be on world cup so I can only imagine when the score came. It was just one of those exciting relief moments. If the game went on until someone won, we definitely were going to win it. At the end, in particular, it was clear that the first team to score would win but neither was playing much defense.

I was very happy with the overall performance on the attack. Great play but man they have to finish. That one off the post should've made it, that one that got kicked out of the stadium almost was a gimme. They have the potential to stay up with just about anyone if they finish those.

Yeah, I was yelling and griping to myself until the wife got home and then she joined me. She said every tv in her work (building has probably 40 offices) seemed to be on world cup so I can only imagine when the score came. It was just one of those exciting relief moments. The US deserved that 2 or 3 times over but it finally came. It was good for soccer as a whole as the conspiracy theories and griping would be insane if we'd lost that one.

Yep, it's safe to say we'll all remember where we were on this day 20 years from now. Soccer has come a long way. :strong:

If Germany wins today as expected then the U.S. has a reasonable chance to get to the final 4 since they will have to beat Ghanna, then S. Korea/Uruguay (none of the top tier teams). Could happen.

For our next opponent to be:

Australia- Australia wins and Ghana wins

Ghana- Germany wins and Australia wins but doesn't make up the 5 GD difference to surpass Ghana

Serbia - Serbia wins and Ghana wins OR Serbia ties AND Ghana wins

Germany - Both games draw or Germany draws and Australia wins but doesn't make up GD difference with Germany

Pretty sure that's accurate. Just incase anyone was trying to figure it out as I was

You have much too much time on your hands! I'm taking your word for it! Two compelling games this afternoon. My brother lives in Sydney and is married to an Australian gal (way cool, too). Their two sons are the frontmen in a band that was invited (travel/lodging/meals/tickets to all of Australia's games) to come and play at the "Australia House". Pretty FN cool if you ask me. I'd love for the "Roos" go through just so my nephews get to hang and party in South Africa for another few days!

But Ghana already has a win and a draw so a loss would make them 1 1 1 as with Australia who currently has a loss and a draw. 1 1 1 for each. Ghana currently has a +1 GD whereas Australia has -4 GD. They'd have equal points in record but the GD is gonna sink Australia.

Haha... it's one of those things that the longer you look at scenarios, the more your brain scrambles. If I looked at it much longer, I'd be retroactively disallowing US goals or something crazy. Had to write it down before I got too confused.

And completely jealous of the nephew. I just mentioned to my wife that I'd love to go to Brazil for the next WC but since the event happens over a month, it'd suck to not be able to catch it all.

That was kinda neat. A display of sportsmanship. A Ghana player accidently elbowed a German player in the throat so he kicked it out of bounds to stop play. The German player then did a throw in that went straight out of bounds to give Ghana a goal kick. Nice to see.

I've given both of my Nephews much crap over the last six months (they came to the US and met us for the first time at Thanksgiving. Stayed at our house for two weeks). My brother is their stepfather who married their Mum this last summer after a 1 year courtship. The kids are all 18-25 (4 of them) and were VERY protective of my sister in law (father bailed after the youngest was born, just up and left). After two years, they wouldn't know what to do without him. He's the one who convinced the band go for it and go to the Cup. Pretty cool all round. They are great young people and we have connected at a real nice level. Heck, musicians. It isn't tough.

"Easy Company" after the "Band of Brothers" 507th. Brothers band/Band of Brothers ...makes sense to me. They are a Punk band (unfortunately, but they are young yet and quite talented). Pretty open to everything, though. We took them to Printer's Alley and The Grand Old Opry in Nashville (they REALLY wanted to go). I think it is FIFA/WC committee/Australia Soccer committee sponsored kind of deal. I know that this an area that corporate sponsorship of the cup also comes into play. Most of the "Nation House" set ups at these world events (i.e. Olympics) are heavily sponsored by the corporate world.

I'll have to watch.

The band thing was funny. They placed the application. Which included an itinerary of their coming dates. Then had to answer a questionare that included the question:"what would you need in order to go and play at the Austrailia House?". They answered: Flights, modest place to crash, meals, and getting to go to a game would be great! They didn't know it, but the selection group saw them perform at their next 6 gigs. When they told them they were in, they also said that they were one of only 2 bands that didn't attatch a fee for the gigs, and wanted tickets to see their team. That was why they were selected. They also all have day jobs that once their employers were told the deal all agreed to extra vacation time as they were representing the nation. Pretty cool of 'em, actually.

Can't put a price on that experience. Anyone in their right mind would do it for free just to be there. Imagine if you could've been in the stadium for today's game. Once in a lifetime experience.

Only thing I can think in the Dempsey one is that he was at one point offsides but the player moved back just before the pass. The ref must've already had it in his mind that he was offsides without considering that the defender backed up.
