AFC First-Round Byes:
Indianapolis Colts
Pittsburgh Steelers

Other AFC Divisional Champions:
New York Jets
Denver Broncos

AFC Wild Cards:
Baltimore Ravens
New England Patriots

NFC First-Round Byes:
New York Giants
New Orleans Saints

Other NFC Divisional Champions:
Minnesota Vikings
San Francisco 49ers

NFC Wild Cards:
Philadelphia Eagles
Chicago Bears

See last week's absurdly premature playoff picture here.

• Not a coincidence: Four of the top five quarterbacks in this week's Quarterback Power Rankings lead teams in the "First Round Bye" spots. Way more often that not, good quarterback = good team.

• The AFC is a land of tumult and upheaval, while the NFC is a placid like of stability. Only one AFC team remains in the same position it was in last week, while only one NFC team is changed.

• Concerning the Denver Broncos finally breaking in, it was just time. It didn't make sense to hold them out any longer. They're real. Mike Nolan has somehow crafted the defense into something that is far greater than the sum of its parts, and Josh McDaniels's has an offense that makes Kyle Orton(notes) look good. His quarterback rating is 97.7, and he has yet to throw an interception.

I don't know how they're doing it, but it's happening, and I can't deny it any longer. Even Brandon Marshall(notes) appears to have his stuff together. I don't know what to say, other than that I was wrong, I am very very dumb, and I should send Josh McDaniels the "I'm Sorry Bouquet" from FTD. Next time you come over, Merlin Olsen, you can help me out with that.

• Despite a 2-2 record, I gave the Steelers a first-round bye. Why? Well, no one else has really grabbed it, as Mark Sanchez(notes) and the Jets fell back to earth a little bit this week, Baltimore lost to New England, and New England's still got some shaping up to do. Long-term, I just like the way Ben Roethlisberger's(notes) playing, I like that they'll get better with Troy Polamalu(notes) back, and I like the signs of life from Rashard Mendenhall(notes).

• The Bears were the one team to sneak into the NFC picture, dislodging Atlanta. Perhaps that's a little unfair, as Atlanta was off this week, but I like what the Bears are doing. If you toss out Week 1, where Jay Cutler(notes) threw something like 89 interceptions, they've got a nice résumé: three wins, no losses, a win over Pittsburgh and only five teams in the league that have scored more points than they have.

4-0 Broncos dont get the first round bye.

*shrug* At least this jackass has the Broncos IN the playoffs.

Now I'm not saying... way too early... we have much to improve...

but...

since 1990 4-0 = playoffs 84% of the time in the NFL.

They're the #1 seed right now, thanks to their 3-0 AFC record vs. Indy's 2-0.

Maybe I should just put this in my sig.

Its awesome how the fact that the guy doesnt assume the season will and as it stands right now turns into a perceived slight.

He gives a 2-2 team the bye because no one else grabbed it? Denver at 4-0 did not grab it?

Meanwhile he says we are for real, although he doesn't know how, and then he says we will be a factor.....but he doesn't give us credit for being tied with Indy at 4-0.

How is this NOT a slight...perceived or not!

It is supposed to be the playoffs as of right now. And as of right now we would have the Bye, and Cinncinatti would be in...Pittsburgh at 2-2 would not even be in the playoffs.

Yet the Bill started 5-0 last year and missed it.

I won't feel like we're guaranteed a playoff spot unless we're 6-0 heading into the bye.

We aren't guaranteed a playoff spot until we beat the Chargers twice. Until then, I won't assume anything. And this is from a guy who has been drinking McD kool-aid all along.

Judging from the text, this must be from Yahoo!(notes) and their endless parade of idiot columnists(notes) who I'd be embarassed to have on a payroll.

We are 4 and 0 and havent claimed anything. His prediction is based on a 16 game performance, not 4. I have no problem with his updated prediction. If we keep playing like this and stomp the likes of the Pats, then we would be looking at the peek. We still have Chargers twice, Giants, at Balt. and at Eagles to deal with. Then you can add at KC and home against the Raiders and... ok, I just threw that last part in for kicks and giggles.

Bull**** they're finished, they're overcoming Norv's ineptitude as we speak. Their team, will injury depleted, is still good and will challenge us.

Any Bronco fan who underestimates San Diego either wasn't around for Week 17 last year or has serious memory blanks.

unfortunately, if Rivers is still standing that team always has a chance

What I really like about this...

Jerry Jones will get no play offs, much less a home game, after opening up his palace. This amuses me.

Chargers this year would kick the **** out of 2008 Broncos.

But I don't think that they are going to beat Denver this year.

No Run game, no defense and if they are one dimensional they will not be able to put up huge points like they did last year. That is not to say Rivers wont have some success, he is an upper tier QB and can make some really great long ball throws (he's right there with Manning and Brees as far as his long ball IMO, very accurate), but this Denver team, especially on Defense, has something special inside.

I think we are sweeping SD this year.

your not alone bud. It's a good bewilderment though. I can't wrap my brain around it, but I don't need too. As long as we're winning.
