Season is going quick! :(

So I'm wondering if Elvis at the quarter point is the NFL Defensive MVP? Has to be between he, Patrick Willis, Antwan Odom and Darren Sharper right?

You be the judge:

Elvis Dumervil
8 sacks, 17 tackles, 2 Pass Ds, and 1 Forced Fumble (5 sacks on 3rd down)

Patrick Willis
2.5 sacks, 37 tackles, 2 INTs, 5 Pass Ds, and 1 TD (INT Return)

Antwan Odom
8 Sacks, 17 tackles (3 on 3rd down)

Darren Sharper
5 INTs, 10 Pass Ds, 14 tackles and 2 TD (INT Returns)

Who you got? For my money, it would be Sharper 1st, tie between Willis and Doom, and then Odom. The best thing you can say about Doom is that his sacks are coming in key situations. 2 of them have come on 2nd downs and put our opponents in 3rd and long(er) situations. 5 have come on 3rd downs to get our D off the field!

Kind of hard to beat a guy that is on pace for 20 INTs. He'll slow down obviously, but I'd guess Sharper will have another 5 INTs at least over the next 12 games and probably another TD. 10 INTs, 50 Tackles and 3 TDs... that got Ed Reed the DPOY right?

Patrick Willis will probably have close to 200 tackles and 7 sacks. He'll likely add another 3 INTs. So, 200 tackles, 7 sacks, and 5 INTs. WOW, Slap was right about that dude... though I think we found out about him around the same time (ESPN article in 2004-5 time frame?)

Doom projects out to 32 sacks... OBVIOUSLY not going to happen. But I'd be shocked if he didn't double his current number. In fact, I'd project him out to 20 sacks right now. It's not like he's slowing down or showing any indications that he will not continue to be dominant. Figure 20 Sacks, 60 tackles, 4 Forced Fumbles and maybe a TD along the way.

Odom is the most likely to drop off. But, he too has a couple multiple sack games including a 5 sack performance against the Packers. The Bengals figure to be in a bunch of shootouts so he should continue to get opportunities, but I don't see him ending up with more sacks than Doom. I'd guess 16 on the season with matching numbers otherwise.

So projected over a full season I have it going as follows:

DPOY- Sharper
2nd- Doom
3rd- Willis
4th- Odom

And I'd bet money that three of those four will be in the conversation at the end of the year.

Thoughts?

Too soon to tell imo, because Odom and Doom both had those "burst" games where they got a bunch of sacks each...hard to tell what they'll end up with. Willis looks like a monster though.

Burst games yes, but you also have to look at the fact that Doom has had multiple sacks in three games straight. Odom has had at least one sack in three games this year as well. Like I said, I don't think any of those 4 ('cept for Patrick Willis) can keep up their current pace, but even slowing down they end up with remarkable seasons.

Darelle Revis should be on that list instead of Sharper.

Sharper is playing lights out. Would have to keep him and Willis above Doom right now, but I'd take top 3, hopefully he can keep it up. I've been very impressed with Doom and the entire front 7.

I'd like to see Sharper get it. The Saints are something of a glamor team so he'll have a good shot. If Doom averages a sack a game he'll finish with 20 for the year. Not too shabby!

Revis with 1 INT and 16 tackles... why not Champ in front of Sharper if that's your point?

Love seeing Doom on the D MVP candidate list. He has been great this year. Gonna be fun seeing him chase Brady, Phyllis, Flacco, and Big Ben around in the next few games.

If I had a vote Id make him D MVP based solely on my homerism.

It didnt get Champ the DPOY award, he lost to Jason Taylors sacks.

Champ had 10 picks, but I dont think 3 tds, only 1 or 2 tds.

That's a good point. The year Reed won I think he had less than 10 INTs so maybe it's just an east coast bias thing?

Still, just having Doom in the conversation at the quarter point is great. The sacks to get us off the field are a big reason this team is amongst the league leaders in 3rd down conversion defense. LOVE IT!
