Well the Avs won on Sakic night 5-2, I don't see many other wins this year, but hey, a lot of people said that about the Broncos too...

From an outsider's perspective (Devils fan) the Avs looked pretty good. They're very fast and very good with the puck. I think they'll be in the 6-10 range in the West. Duchene looks awesome. Reminds me of Parise.

Devils-Flyers tomorrow

Any die hard Avs fan (guess we're not a large bunch) had to get chills watching the game last night. Not just because of Joe Sakic night, but for the glimpses of the future.

The obvious one of course was Duchene. I really didn't expect much from him this year... making the jump from juniors straight to the NHL at the age of 18 is very tough. Only a handful of very special players have ever been able to do that and look like they belong. In the 1st period he looked like what I'd expect him to look like... just trying to get accustomed to the speed and physicality of the NHL game. But by the end of the 2nd I was blown away. That penalty killing shift near the end of the 2nd was a thing of beauty. Had a ten year veteran had a shift like that it would have been remarkable, but for an 18 year old playing his first game, killing a penalty against a stacked team like the Sharks? Wow...

I think the Avs will be better than the most common prognostications (which is simply to say, they won't be the worst team in the league). Most people don't understand how much lousy coaching and injuries had to do with last years results. I wasn't a fan of the Sacco hire but I was willing to give him a chance, and I like what I saw last night. I can't remember the team playing that hard at any time during either of Granato's stints.

The Flyers are going to make some noise this season, if they can stay healthy. 26 something blocked shots against the Canes tonight in front of a sold out RBC center crowd, with some very impressive Goaltending from Emery. I have to say its a shame Emery got run out of Ottawa because of their raging media outlets, the kid has some serious talent. The Flyers are going to be a defensive power house in the East this season, with a great group of Forwards that can score and play both ways.

All of this coming from a Canes fan, needless to say I was very impressed with the Flyers tonight.

The Canes gave up a lot of chances they should have capitalized on, but they get a chance to rebound against the Bruins tonight. Joni Pitkanen being out really hurt our lateral puck movement, he should be back in a few days. With Pitkanens return I expect the Canes to really come into form and show why they were a contender in the East last season.

My ten cents from opening night.

It's only been two games but the 2009-10 Avs are showing more energy and are far more entertaining than we've seen in the last 5 years -- a really enjoyable style of play. Plus excellent work in the net.

I'm a big Av's fan! Go Av's!

Same here...a good friend was at the Sakic jersey retirement game and today's game. Flew up there from Phoenix. I told him before the season started that if we can stay healthy and get solid goaltending from Anderson...92% save average and like 2.30 goals agaisnt..we have a shot at making the playoffs. Still early but beating a stacked team like San Jose at any point in the season 5-2 is impressive. We've beat two playoff teams from last year to start the season...not bad!!

Here's to a injury free season and to some goaltending we haven't seen since Roy!!

GO AVS!!!

Edit: Wings lost there first two games...only way this week gets better is if the Broncs beat Dallas tomorrow!

Ha!

Yea, that hurt pretty bad. This team just has no chemistry right now, something needs to change. Hopefully we will mix up our lines and see if we can get more production scoring...well...any production scoring. Putting Ray Whitney, Erik Cole, and Eric Stall on the same line has proven time and time again ineffective. You cant concentrate all of your scoring prowess on one line and expect to be successful when you are playing teams with dynamic defensive super stars.

Could the Avs be the Broncos of the NHL?! Okay, way too soon to know much of anything, but it has been exciting to see them come out of the gate like this. Maybe Joe Sacco and the kids can accelerate this rebuilding process quicker than we thought. At the very least this could be a fun team to watch.

Matt Duchene is incredible. Before the season started I figured there was about a 70% chance Duchene gets sent back to juniors at the end of nine games but two games in I can't see that happening at all. He's been arguably the best player on the ice for either team in both games. Wolski and Stastny have scored more but they're playing with each other (and Hejduk), while Duchene has largely been doing things on his own (Svatos has been invisible).

But man, he's flying out there, working hard, relentless after the puck, and he's dominating on the penalty kill, which is astounding for an 18 year old playing his first NHL games.

This guy (hopefully) will be playing for the Avs for the next 15-20 years. How lucky we are after Sakic retires we already got a superstar in the making to watch.

They are dumb, I agree...I hate the home plate logo. They are the third jersey's.

Apparently the Kings brass wants to return to the "glory days" aka the Gretzky era. Personally I would have preferred if they went back to the purple and gold jerseys.

That's why I don't like it, though I do own one old 99 Gretzky jersey like those...except it has a chevy logo on it.

like this...

Speaking of The Great One...did anyone catch the ESPN Documentary called "Kings Ransom" by Peter Berg, basically was about "The TRADE" of Gretzky going to the Kings. I found it very interesting...it was also interesting that he almost ended up in Detroit.

Its not like the first two games were played against sub-par teams, beating the Sharks 5-2 was huge especially because the sharks just got off their highest point season 117 points enough for the President trophy and a San Jose Franchise record.Than the Canucks who have a Roberto Luongo haha enough said about that. So far so good and Matt Duchane, I can see his 9 getting retired in 15-20 years. He is one of the pureist players to play the game.

I really liked Smyth while he was here even if he didn't put up the greatest numbers. At first I thought it was a straight salary dump sending him to LA but Kyle Quincey has been worth it... a young, two way stud on the blue line. He's already the Avs best d-men and that may not be saying much, but Kyle Quincey is good enough to be that player on a lot of teams.

Avs improve to 5-1-1. Good mojo among Denver teams no one gave a chance to before the season started. Avs early schedule looked almost as brutal as the Broncos schedule.

Won tonight despite the refs missing a call on the Habs tieing goal when the puck clearly hit the netting and the Habs being allowed to skate with seven players on the ice for the last 30 seconds:

I was just about to say this also. The Avs are pulling a Broncos so far. They were expected to be the worst team in the league, and have come out firing, and Their new Goalie has been more then exceptional thus far!

Is he on the same line as Parise?

They usually play together, but Lemaire has split them up thus far. The lines tonight against the Rangers were:

Parise-Zubrus-Langenbrunner
Bergfors-Zajac-Clarkson
Pandolfo-Niedermayer-Rolston
Leblond-Pelley-Halischuk

Zajac just controls the neutral zone. His skating and stickhandling abilities are a nightmare for opposing forecheckers and defensemen.

It's great to see the Aves starting to get back on target. Was so weird the last few years to see them not only MISSING the playoffs but not winning the division.

Really weird to see almost all of the "old team" gone or retired now.

Will be great though of all the young players can get it going and stick around for a decade. We've got a really solid nucleus of young talent.

Dinos played like absolute crap against the Stars and Blues lately...and the Stars were without their best players. I think the Dinosaurs have bigger problems than you care to admit. They completely jumbled that roster and threw a bunch of players together in one offseason, I don't think the chemistry is there yet. Bobby Ryan looks pretty rusty as well...2 points in 7 games? Glad I didn't draft him on my Fantasy team.ROFL!

To help the Kings, now that we are "flipping" some of these weekend games (and Wed/Thursday games), maybe we are tiring out the opponent before they hit the Staples Center the night after.

All we needed the whole time was a solid goalie and a break from injuries. The last 2 years have been brutal for the Avs as far as injuries go. I bet our top players in those 2 seasons played 30 games max together(Sakic, Smyth, Stastny, Hejduk, Forsberg..never really healthy) You knew it was bad when Sakic ****ed up his hand using a snow blower last year! Luck don't get much worse than that!

Nice to see the Avs at the top once again!

I kind of wish we had Forsberg back... he's just withering away in Sweden on team Modo.

Edit: just read he got injured AGAIN... stress fracture in his foot. Poor guy :(...

He'd actually like to join the Avalanche again but we may turn him away due to our youth movement. IMO you can't turn away a vet leader like that, especially someone who is so damn good when healthy. I'm sure we have 1 guy we can drop for him if he heals up.

We'd sign him...a 80% Forsberg is still one of the best in the league..look what he did when he came back the end of the 07-08 season. Not to mention the butts he put in seats and jersey sales! Imagine him on the left wing with Duchene and Svatos on the right!! If he did fracture his foot he's more than likely done for good!! He'll never get the recognition he deserves...he was the best player in the league when 100%!!

My favorite Ave mind you!

yes, embarrasing. About 3 5 on 3 PPs and they took advantage of every one of them. Actually, Toronto was ranked 12th in PP scoring so that isnt there problem. Not playing teams like my Ducks were the problem. If you see some highlights, there is one of Marchant getting nailed into the top part of the board (where the plexiglass meets). It wonít be announced by the league until early December, but Kings officials have been told that Los Angeles will host the NHL Entry Draft next June. Itís still to be determined whether the event will be held at Staples Center or Nokia Center, but the dates will be June 25-26. By all accounts, it will be the same format, with the first round on Friday night and the rest on Saturday. Give credit to Kyle Woodlief of the Red Line Report scouting newsletter for first mentioning thisÖ

Scuds doesn't have a history of being dirty. So he got off with a warning essentially, and talked to the NHL about the hit. Plus he said he wanted to call Chimera and apologize for the hit.

As for Ott, he has a history of being suspended, that factors in as well. I think that is why he got 2 games, it's his third suspension.

Don't know, that is a great question. Kopi has really worked hard in the offseason to be in great shape. So I think he can do it for the season. I honestlydon't care if he is the leading scorer or not, just the fact that he can be a legit #1 center will make me happy.

why is it the Kings are always the team to cover the flyers problems?

Cechmanek is no longer accepted in Philly. result? practically given to LA

We sign Forsberg and no longer have room for Roenick. result? practically given to LA

We need to get Goat out of the minors. result? practically given to LA

now we don't want Jones contract so that we can get under 50. result? COMPLETELY given to LA.....in fact, we're paying 1.3 million for him to go to LA.

im hoping that there is something more to this, i would have rather let him rot in the minors then had to eat that 1.3 mill of cap space

I'm not sure I'm ready to buy into the Avs as much as I have the Broncos (Anderson has had to stop an insane number of shots so far), but it is impressive. Lots of injuries, tons of inexperience, yet they just keep winning. Not sure what kind of expectations to have, especially in this division. I like it though.

You forgot the Kings are run by former Flyer people. Specifically speaking about the General Manager and the Coach. Terry Murray, led Philly to it's last Cup appearance. Our GM, Dean Lombardi, was in charge of your Western Conference scout department awhile back.

Cechamanek and Roenick bombed in LA, so we didn't win those trades. Also this Randy Jones business is a smart but low key pickup, from the standpoint that Dean was looking for a veteran puck mover with playoff experience for awhile. Jones should be playing 7th Dman. Purely a depth move...thanks for the discount Philly!

Kings win 5-2. That must have been the worst 20 minutes of hockey you had to watch there in the third. Totally dismantled the Penguins in the third with 4 goals. Congrats, man. Yeah...the third period was pretty bad.....actually before that we were still getting outshot, but Flower was holding up. Sid seems frustrated....Kunitz and Guerin are rarely converting anything he sets up...he did have a nice scoring chance in this game but Quick made the stop.

The PP really needs Gonchar back. Gogo is a great shot from the point, but I don't think he can QB the PP...neither can Letang. They really need Gonch, Geno and Talbot, back. I don't think anyone's afraid of our second line with Staal and Dupuis on it. Fedotenko isn't getting anything going with those guys. Dupuis shouldn't be in the top six and Staal is more of a defensive center, even though he did have a goal tonight.

Let us see if you 1) Make the playoffs every year, 2)Make the Semi Finals in your conference three times, 3) Make the Finals twice and 4) Win a Stanley Cup which has never been done in LA. When your young guns accomplish that, then you can talk all the smack you want. This franchise did what was needed to accomplish the four steps I laid out. Since you have been harping on these young guns for so many seasons now as the Kings struggled, let us see if they can match the accomplishments.

Let us see if the Ducks stick around for 40 years....I doubt they will with the fans disbanding that sinking ship now and it has already undergone ownership changes in its short history. Secondly I would like to add that the Ducks are only in the NHL because the Kings allowed them to be. Since allowing them, you've been our b*tches. 40-34-17 record vs your Disney movie made team. Hilarious!

Also the 4 goals you have laid out, are attainable, its not like the Ducks are the Yankees with a bunch of Championships where it will take a century or two to catch up. Your recent good teams never had any staying power and here you duckies are...scraping at the bottom of the barrel.

When your young guns accomplish that, then you can talk all the smack you want. This franchise did what was needed to accomplish the four steps I laid out. Since you have been harping on these young guns for so many seasons now as the Kings struggled, let us see if they can match the accomplishments.

They will, keep in mind this current Kings organization was blown up and being built from scratch under Dean Lombardi. Who by the way built the San Jose Sharks into a consistent playoff team and Stanley Cup favorites.

When he took over the Kings, there was major changes, new scouts, new equipment manager...everything was being fixed. The goal is to achieve what the Red Wings and Devils have done from the 1990s to the current season. If you know your hockey history, which you probably don't, the Red Wings had a very bad era (was affectionately known as the Dead Wings era) for 20 years prior to their recent glory years. They built their team to last for awhile, they did that by building their teams through the draft..and more importantly through development. Something the Kings never did before Dean Lombardi arrived.

So stand back...Kings will be a force for the next 20 years, our AHL affiliate is the number one team in the standings and is the second youngest squad.

Hilarious!

oh, there is something to shoot for, but then again, when you HAVE BEEN THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL, anything positive is a good step. Also, 40 and 34 is considered bitches? How many of those wins got you to the playoffs? Name me another team that made the finals one year and then were inept for how many years? Fill me in and I am sure it is some NHL record. We have had two owners since 1993. How many have you had in the same time? Was McNall still owner or was he in jail by that time? Problem with you is that your smack was the same every single year and now that it is finally showing a winner, you cant give credit where it is due. Your team can be like the Tampa Bay Rays (or even the Bucs). Suck for so many years and then have a break out season. Meet those 4 goals to see if your team has that staying power. One thing you cant refute is that we have a Stanley Cup Championship and it took less than 15 years. Your team has exactly zero in 40 years. So, thank you for letting us be 35 miles down the road as we loved spoiling and taking over your "territory" for all these years. Nothing will be sweeter if we are some lonely 8th seed and play you guys to knock you out. At least for the Kings, that will be one small fraction of the 4 part plan and success I laid out.

oh, there is something to shoot for, but then again, when you HAVE BEEN THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL

Sure we've had plenty of mediocre years...but the fans still stuck around. That's why we've been in the league for 40 plus years. Can the Ducks? I doubt it. I see your games on FSN, your building is damn near empty.

Also, 40 and 34 is considered b****es?

Yep. We also swept you in 2002, I believe.

McNall still owner or was he in jail by that time?

Your owner Samueli was crooked too but got off. Probably paid someone off.

How many have you had in the same time?

Three, but our current ownership has staying power...they built us an arena, entertainment center outside of it, state of the art practice facility and bought our affiliates teams and built them new arenas too. We're not going anywhere.

Your team can be like the Tampa Bay Rays (or even the Bucs). Suck for so many years and then have a break out season.

Probably going to be like the Red Wings organization success. We're using the Devils and Red Wings model to build teams through drafting and development. We have the second youngest team in the NHL, and coincidentally the second youngest in the AHL. It's built for staying power.

Your former GM Burke bailed on your team last year, because he saw the writing on the wall. He traded and signed a bunch of veterans...that will be good for 2-3 years. The Dallas Stars will face this reality soon as well.

Nothing will be sweeter if we are some lonely 8th seed

Next time you want to call the Anaheim Ducks "Dinosaurs", please note that the team is at 27.36 average age currently. This would be about 20th in the league from two seasons ago. Not sure this year but last year, the average team age was exactly 28 at the beginning of the 2008 season.

Sorry but most of your young players are career 3rd liners. Other than Getzlaf, none of them are worth a crap. Pipeline is the same way, lacking top end talent. Only good thing about your future I can see is your salary cap situation. Would be even better, but Giggy's contract is just horrendous.

I don't see the Ducks being good for awhile, this years draft sucks and if the Ducks pick high it will be tough going...

I'll give you Perry. Sexton is still a prospect, I need to see more of him before he is considered a good NHL'er. Ryan...we've been down this road before.

But Hiller is above average, not your future goalie. Won't be put on waviers, though I predict he will be traded. Has good value because of his contract and production. If your GM is smart they trade Hiller for picks or prospects and bring up Pogge. Ideally you would want to trade Giggy, but that contract is just bad...actually bad doesn't even describe it.

I was hoping Bobby Ryan would prove you totally wrong when we played the Kings a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, he was so damn soft. Haha, don't worry, the US hockey program gets a lot of respect now. I don't mean to play down your Olympic team at all; I think Kane, Parise, Erik Johnson, etc are brilliant players (and I loves me some Ryan Kesler). It's more so everyone up here is just so pumped about the roster Yzerman put together that most fans can't see how another squad could match up with that kind of talent top to bottom.

Then we have Bobby Ryan, who was called a sophmore stiff is now the leader goal scorer for US born players and made the team. In fact, I think 7 made it from the Ducks. Ducks? Team moving on up the standings with more great goalie play from Hiller. Hiller? You mean Champ says just average? I guess you forgot his play last year when he took over for Giggy. Took out the Sharks then forced a 7th game with the Red Wings. Well, they are moving up again and finally winning on the road. Wings are getting their kids a lot of ice time--Howard, Helm, Abdelkader, et al are finding their NHL legs and it's showing. Couple that with guys getting healthy--Cleary, Z, Ericsson, Kronwall, and Franzen either back or on schedule to return--and we should make it tough for anyone in a 7 gamer. i think alot of that may have to do with the fact that all your top kids are up here playing juniors in canada, you really dont get the cream of the crop playing down in the US. The kids wanna go where they have the best chance of getting noticed, and believe it or not they still have a better chance getting a hockey deal or drafted playing in red deer alberta, than in any big US city.

Even if they do get noticed in the US the first thing an NHL club does is tells them to go for conditioning up in canada to play with the best players in the world, so yeah Props to the US for getting trophy #2

Crosby with 3 more points (2 of which were goals). He's 3rd in scoring at this point and 2nd in goals. He'll break the 50 goal pleateau this year for the first time and its not inconcievable that he could win the Rocket Richard (only 1 goal back at present, although that's still probably an uphill battle). I'm really happy that he has improved his shot. Unfortunately, no one else is doing anything. Malkin is in the midst of a long cold streak and Flower was inconsistent tonight after having a superb outing against Toronto. The biggest problem for this team right now is the power play. They are absolutely god awful at it. They had several PP's including a 5 on 3 and it was a complete disaster. They are worst in the NHL at the PP, which should NEVER be the case with that kind of talent. If this team was just in the middle of the road in PP, they'd be RUNNING AWAY with the East. We're still doing alright, but we could be alot better. We shouldn't be losing twice in the same season to teams like Minnesota.

He'll break the 50 goal pleateau this year for the first time and its not inconcievable that he could win the Rocket Richard (only 1 goal back at present, although that's still probably an uphill battle).

nice you comeback after a win. Havent heard much from you or your team until tonight. I guess Red Wings threatening to jump to the 8th spot got you guys sparked. Good win. That Bobby Ryan proved you wrong for the year. Lots of hockey left. We are moving up and you guys are spuddering. This was a set back but after winning 5 in a row, a game after one the night before isnt horrible. The score, though, was bad. (That 4th goal was BS btw)

they have to do stuff like that cuz nobody in cali cares about hockey, you know how they promote it up here ? by printing that there is a game, I always laugh when i watch games and see 4 tickets 4 hotdogs, 4 drinks, and 4 hats for 99 buck type deals, 99 bucks gets you 2 parking spaces close to the air canada center, no game tickets, and maybe a large popcorn.

whatever works and Ducks dont pay for it, the sponsors do. To comfort you, we are getting really fat as the Ducks play well at home. I think they are on a 6 game road trek now so with being 4 points behind the Kings, this would be a good time to continue playing well on the road (like beating the Blackhawks). BTW: My season tickets in the top deck, center ice (near the press box so near the top) is $16 per ticket. $43 at the box office so pretty good deal. If you are ever in town and want to watch your team lose, give me a PM. :)

And we're off...

Multiple sources have indicated to The Hockey News the Thrashers have had significant trade talks with the Los Angeles Kings concerning moving Kovalchuk there in recent days. They reportedly presented the Kings with a shopping list of what it would take to get Kovalchuk and itís believed that while the Kings would be very interested in adding a scorer of Kovalchukís ability to their group of young stars, the asking price is currently more than GM Dean Lombardi is willing to surrender.

Not sure what to make of the recent trades involving the Leafs, with so many players involved.

However I think they made a good move for the future for Phaneuf, who is overrated but could still improve his game. Calgary is probably the biggest winner today, they improved their scoring a little bit. Anaheim made a lateral move IMO.

I don't know who won this trade. From my point of view it's a whole lot of who gives a ****. The Flames get out from under Diane's awful contract, so perhaps this was a case of them shedding salary to make a bigger move near the deadline, or in the off-season.

However that's not the big story tonight...apparently the Kings are on the verge of acquiring Ilya Kovalchuk.

Atlanta Thrashers left wing Ilya Kovalchuck, this year's top catch on the NHL's trade market, may be on his way to Hollywood. Sources are rumbling that a deal is nearly complete that would send Atlanta's franchise player to the Kings. There are currently no details on what the Thrashers would receive in return for one of the NHL's top snipers.

After the Ray Whitney deal fell apart, if rumors are true, we may be going after Ilya hard.

Personally I feel excited to land a player of Kovy's stature, arguably one of the top NHL players, but I cringe at what the cost will be.

I want the Avs to stay the hell away from Kovalchuk. He's not going to put them over the top in regards to being a legit cup contender. The price would be far too high for what would most likely be a rental. It's one thing if Sherman decides to jettison some contract for pennies on the dollar (Darcy Tucker please) in return, but it's another to send your top end young talent the other way when they're already playing well, and most likely will only get better.

I think that standing pat, and continuing to throw the young guys out there is the move. Bid on him during free agency if that's what you want to do.
