http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/09/23/report-shanahan-wasnt-going-to-cut-marshall/

It was more than a week ago that Florio wrote how he didn't believe the ESPN report that Broncos coach Mike Shanahan was going to cut Brandon Marshall.

The issue would appear to be dead at this point. But in true PFT style, let's make sure it's really dead with another flogging.

The Denver Post writes Shanahan has been telling people that the report is not true, and that he had no intention of cutting Marshall. Which makes a lot of sense.

Shanahan, after all, was the man who kept giving Travis Henry chances to turn his life around. There were many other players far less talented than Marshall with worse off-field issues that received second chances in Denver.

Marshall is at no risk of getting cut by the new staff either, but he has some work to do to guarantee a full complement of snaps. If Marshall doesn't get up to speed, the Broncos are a lot more likely to let him walk via free agency next offseason.

Maybe he can hook up with Shanahan's new team then.

It sure seemed unlikely he'd just drop him. At the very least he would have been looking to get something in a trade.

wasn't it Mortenson that broke that story?...

if so...he should be raked over the coals for putting that out if he didn't hear it from the horses mouth...

Doesn't he have a habit of doing that?

I don't think shanny has ever cut/traded a guy for off the field stuff. The only reasons I ever remember him getting rid of guys was for contract disputes and half assing it on the field. Marshall would have fit into those categories but only this offseason, not when Shanahan was here.

Shanny still would trade guys that he could. I don't remember him cutting a single star that could get good compensation in a trade.

I never believed he was going to just cut Marshall.

Q&A: Shanahan wasn't going to cut Marshall
By Jeff Legwold
The Denver Post

Welcome back, and keep the queries coming.

Today's comes from Rob Ridley in Grand Junction:

Q: Last week (a report) revealed that Mike Shanahan was going to cut Brandon Marshall, but I haven't really seen anything in The Post on it. What do you know about this, and has this maybe helped Marshall realize that he is not as great as he thinks he is and has some work to do? Is he still in Josh McDaniels' doghouse?

A: In this day and age of the Internet, Twitter, Facebook, etc., there are reports about a lot of things. And when it comes to the Broncos, Marshall's activities have led the way it seems.

Sometimes the reports are responsible, and sometimes they are not. Sometimes, especially at some of the larger operations, like ESPN for example, they have a pile of people covering the league who are almost competing with one another to be first. In my opinion, it has caused some folks — many of whom I've known for quite some time — to perhaps rush some things on air as they jockey for their own spots within the company.

Some may disagree with that, but it's just an observation.

There was indeed a report about Shanahan having a plan to cut Marshall after last season. All I can tell you is that Shanahan has told people I know very well the report was not true, that he had no intention of cutting Marshall.

And frankly, the logic isn't quite there in the original premise since Shanahan had often kept — and paid far more to — players like Travis Henry who had far deeper off-the-field troubles. Henry was eventually cut when the list of transgressions got too long, but that was long after he had already secured a huge signing bonus from the team.

That's not to say Shanahan would have signed Marshall to a new deal any more quickly than the team's current administration. The team had begun to limit his finances a little more late in his tenure, and they were less active in the free-agent market after spending mistakes like Simeon Rice cost the franchise some big money.

Shanahan would have likely made Marshall play out this season, or at least most of it, as well to see where his development was on and off the field before giving him a new deal.

As far as the doghouse, McDaniels is going to play Marshall, but McDaniels will also rotate, and Marshall's playing time won't increase until his routes are cleaner.

I'm not a PFT fan either but where did that come from. In terms of these rumors they actually call BS when they initially came out.

It seems pretty logical to me that these reports came out of Marshall's camp after they realized a trade was unlikely. Seems to me to be an attempt to convince the Bronco's FO that cutting him is the right thing to do. "Shanahan was going to do it.. aaaand Brandon is a headache, so maybe you guys should consider it too."

When has a coach EVER simply cut a 25-year old Pro Bowler?

How quickly you all forget this...

I told a few people about this last year in confidence. Now, Its out there. People here have NO IDEA of who Marshall is off the field and what he did before he was even drafted by DEN. This is not a fake story, it was being discussed internally and would have happened had there not been a regime change...
