After reading your article on Ron Bloom and his great accomplishment of saving GM and Chrysler from bankruptcy (“Manufacturing czar likely to have more sway,” Sept. 8), I think the American people should know the whole story. Mr. Bloom, the new manufacturing czar and head of the auto recovery task force, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and President Barack Obama do not want the American people to understand the unfair and unequal treatment of salaried autoworkers.
The Delphi Corp. workers who worked for decades for GM have been segregated — some represented (union workers) and some non-represented (salaried worker-engineers, accountants and clerks). The task force and Treasury decided that the union workers’ healthcare and pensions would be saved, but not the salaried workers’.
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) stated Delphi salaried workers got a raw deal and asked the GM head to reverse the decision to exclude them from the pension deal and to treat them equitably. Rep. Chris Lee (R-N.Y.) has led an effort to get a bipartisan group of 46 congressional members to jointly request a hearing to understand this issue, and House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) agreed to hold a hearing. To date President Obama, Secretary Geithner, Mr. Bloom and GM CEO Fritz Henderson have not responded to any requests or objections regarding the unfair treatment of this non-represented class of worker.
New York
From Den Black, interim president, Delphi Salaried Retirees Association
In the process of the GM “deal,” over 15,000 salaried retirees of GM’s spun-off components and systems unit — Delphi Corp. — were thrown under the bus. While the auto recovery task force, GM, and Delphi agreed to default the pension plans for all classes of Delphi employees to the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation (PBGC), only the pensions for GM-Delphi salaried retirees were singled out for discrimination.
While Delphi retirees represented by the United Auto Workers union and the International Union of Electrical Workers-Communications Workers of America will have their pensions topped off to the levels they would have received directly from GM-Delphi, GM-Delphi salaried retirees will receive very significantly reduced pensions under PBGC limits set by Congress.
Mr. President and members of Congress, now is the time for you to stand in the shoes of GM-Delphi salaried retirees, against whom fortune has turned, largely at the hand of our government — the auto task force.

If the non-union workers voted for Obama, they got what they voted for. I can't feel sorry for them. Did they think voting for socialists has no consequences?

these non-union workers just learned the hardway why unions are a good thing. Had they unionized & stood together maybe they wouldn't be shafted. Unions were born out of workers getting tired of getting the shaft.

They don't even try to hide that. Why not? reps count on corp. money which doesn't carry many votes, union are a voting block that can't be ignored. So at the end of the day, do I go with corporate money or do I support unions that will bring actual votes by the numbers to the voting booths? I'll choose the latter.

LOL sorry you should have worked union. Forget that some people just not offered unions. Some workers can't because they are considered professionals. It's not fair for govt to bail out unions and leave non union to rot.

Exactly.
Also, were these non-union people paying into the pension fund? Usually pension funds are funded with union dues and some contribution from the company. If these workers weren't part of the union and weren't paying into the fund, hard for me to feel sorry for them not getting the benefits.

Were those non-union workers ever given the choice or opportunity to join a union?
I bet these same non-union workers would like to see the "Employee Free Choice Act" passed.

I don't get your point. Both union and non union workers are in the employment of corporations. The govt should not help one group over the other IMO.
Sure workers have the right to unionize, but that doesn't mean the govt should loan money and cut deals that save pensions of unions employee but not non union.
I know you see that as B.S but you just will never admit when something your Obama is letting go on is wrong. It's that simple.

I don't think corporations should get special privileges from congress/govt with the intent to increase their greed and power over the workers of whom they depend on for their success and profits. As for Obama on this issue of workers right to unioinize....he's not liberal enough so I find fault with Obama in this regard.
Reagan and Republican Congressional leadership over the last 28 years has set the tone on how unions were valued when PATCO was busted up. Since that time Republican Presidents and the GOP has tried to all but elilminate unions. The employee free trade act when it passes will turn back the clock on the ravages and destruction the GOP leadership and their Admin. have tried to destroy.
Corporations have been allowed to become too powerful and influential over the country and the workers. IMO.

Under the 14th Amendment the Governemnt has to provide equal protection. Since the Governemnt owns GM.......tisk, tisk. This is why you don't get involved with Government. They won't follow their own rules.

Yup, I was a salaried worker at GM corporate. I put in my 2 weeks, and then got layed off with 10 other people (that I know of) last week. They had huge white collar lay offs last week that the news didn't even touch. If it's not union it doesn't get play. ass backwards.

That would shine poorly on obamas pet project but that's how the biased media keeps the useful idiots happy ( if they don't know they can't have an opinion) obama can't afford to lose any more popularity so your story simply gets forgotten and your right it's complete bullshyt.
and iam sorry about the layoff hang in there brother.

So if a corp get govt help you don't see a problem with union workers getting saved, and white collar people getting busted up? It's all taxpayer money right? should be done fairly with no regard to union or non-union.
you try to take argument to other others but the point is GM got taxpayer money, gave it to the union people, and screwed all the white collar workers who I don't think can unionize.
