Should the National Endowment for the Arts encourage artists to create art on issues being vehemently debated nationally?

That is the question that I set out to discuss a little over three weeks ago when I wrote an article on Big Hollywood entitled The National Endowment for the Art of Persuasion?”

The question still requires debate but the facts do not.

But some have claimed that the invite and passages, pulled from the conference call that inspired the article, were taken out of context. Context is what I intend to establish here.

On August 10th, the National Endowment for the Arts, the White House Office of Public Engagement, and the Corporation for National and Community Service hosted a conference call with a handpicked arts group. This arts group played a key role in Obama’s arts effort during his election campaign, as declared by the organizers of the call, and many on the call played a role in the now famous Obama Hope poster.
Much of the talk on the conference call was a build up to what the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) was specifically asking of this group. In the following segment, Buffy Wicks, Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, clearly identifies this arts group as a pro-Obama collective and warns them of some “specific asks” that will be delivered later in the meeting.

•“I just first of all want to thank everyone for being on the call and just a deep deep appreciation for all the work you all put into the campaign for the 2+ years we all worked together.”
•“We won.”
•“I’m actually in the White House and working towards furthering this agenda, this very aggressive agenda.”
•“We’re going to come at you with some specific asks here.”
•“I hope you guys are ready.”
Later in the call, “specific asks” were delivered by Yosi Sergant, then Communications Director of the National Endowment for the Arts. What were the “asks”? They were for this pro-Obama arts group to create art on several hotly debated political issues, including health care:

The problem is that there is just not much Right Wing art or Right Wing artists. I mean, other than this guy's work:

I guess they should have invited him. In the interests of fairness. ;D

Hell, as long as Congress' testicular fortitude is somewhat visible, why not de-fund these partisan hacks too? Granted, Dems all over the halls of Congress would be stabbing their own propaganda machine in the heart, but America's watching this time. Quality of modern art coming out of that cesspool aside, the NEA isn't there to push political leanings of opportunisitic leaches.

Aww, it's no different than Bush giving tax dollars to churches.

WHY DO REPUBLICANS HATE WRITERS AND ARTISTS SO MUCH?

Conservatives in GENERAL have never thought the arts were important. They tried for years to get funding for any arts program in public schools, with reading, writing and arithmetic as staples only. In fact, they even don't like reading that much.

Ban this and ban that is their motto. To the, education is a business where you learn to work in business to create money so that the wealthy can get wealthier. Conservatives think of the arts as trash and waste of time. They don't want people to think. They want them as robotics geared to think 'green' and not in a good way.

Before bashing the NEA and wishing for its ultimate demise, keep this in mind, every man-made thing you see was first designed by an artist. For example: web-sites, magazines, buildings, plates, clothing, and on and on! Besides all the things created by artists it is a know fact that children who receive art in their education learn to problem solve and think analytically.

93% of people who make over 100,000 a year had art in their education. Still think it isn't necessary then maybe you need to take an art class. And by the way almost all top visual artist today have had an education in art. Even Picasso was trained classically. You would know all this if you had ever studied art.

The NEA helps subsidize the funds that a local performing arts center is paying to bring in an amazing dance company or world music group or multicultural theatre project ...so that these amazing artists can go into the local schools for life changing workshops and performances to students that otherwise couldn't afford to see all manner of Arts that we might have access to as adults or in bigger communities.

NEA only selects programs that are going to have an educational impact on the community they are visiting. Arts, especially Live performances, have been proven to change the lives of students every day...it even enhances their math skills and their creativity in all sorts of practical applications. How can people decide what show they will buy if the local Perf.

Arts center can no longer afford to contract to bring anyone...this is what is happening. Some of the brightest people I have ever met work in the Arts because they believe in it, and they do it usually for a pittance. That $50Million for the NEA will save or create at least 1500 jobs directly (vs. about 4 bank execs).

Remember when the liberals went ape**** about Armstrong Williams getting some type of kickback for endorsing Bush's policies on his radio show? To me, if you found that objectionable, you should find this objectionable. If you didn't see the problem with Williams, you should see no problem with this. It's essentially the White House paying for propaganda dissemination.

And, in a totally predictable move by the Administration, do they apologize for the appearance of gross impropriety and adhere to the rules in place for such issues? Hell no. They change the rules! Of course--and this holds for ANY adminstration, Dem or Repub--when the government is the benefactor, the temptation to do this sort of thing will never go away and will likely spike with election cycles. Eliminate the agency and take Education with you, while you're at it (same benefactor mentality exists there, as well).

But-but but.......lets look at the positive impact the NEA has on our society.
The industry employs over 2.6 million people, expended $63.1 billion and generated $6.3 billion in local and state taxes. The work the NEA accomplish generates an additional $103 billion for local merchants and their communities (sustaining 3.1 million jobs and over $16 billion in local, state and federal taxes. I think the arts are a little more than a hobby.

But maybe I'm just crazy. The next time you go out golfing or visit a state of th art new NFL stadium, think about who designed the courses?

These marvel architectural structures, sure weren't created and built by TONE death, color blind non-creative thinking creatures known as tribal conservatism.....thats for sure.

Bronx's ya ever wonder why conservativism is soooo boring and detrimental to the human experience

Wow, you seem to be saying that civilization just would not exist without the NEA, a government agency. Can you demonstrate that the above accomplishments would not have occurred absent NEA? What was life like before 1965? Was our nation devoid of art? Of course not. The vast majority of funding for the arts comes from private sources--many of them rich conservative art aficionados, i'm guessing. In short, one 'industry' that does not need government help is the arts. If all those mega-stars who work in the industry actually gave back to that industry, NEA could replace their budget and then some. Cut it loose and make it a private organization. If artists care enough to fund it and carry on its work, then good for them. Not to mention that there exists no fair manner in which to distribute our (yours and mine) money since art appreciation is so subjective. You only need look at some of the stuff that passes for art and is funded by NEA to see what I mean. Point: When a government agency whose mission is to fund art and foster art becomes a political and partisan vehicle of the Executive Branch, it abandons its mission and becomes a Ministry of Propaganda. Contrary to your assertion, there are conservative artists as well and my point still stands--when the government patronizes art, the temptation to do what Obama did is inherent.
