The people of Afghanistan have defeated the following:

-Alexander the Great
-The British over 80 years
-Russia turned tail and ran after 18 years

It is NO reflection on our military's capabilities, its indicative of the variety of isolated social groups, the terrain and the people.

Any one listening, here is the NEW STRATEGY:

Reinforce and protect 1 or 2 large bases from which to launch drone attacks on Pakistani border regions, which HAS BEEN effective in defeating Al Qaeda elements. And there, THAT IS IT!!!

You will NOT be able to win "hearts and minds" with military intervention, the Afghanistan army is largely uneducated, can't read or write, YOU CANNOT MAKE THEM AN EFFECTIVE, RELIABLE figting force any more than you can reform Wall Street so save it for Christmas and ask Santa because that WOULD be a better IDEA than committing MORE TROOPS to a proverbial meat grinder.

I do believe, actually, that Alexander the Great conquered Afghanistan and then left for India. I dont know how you chalk that up. The Khans went there, I think Tamerlane went there, the Brits took a few shots at it - its where they got their opium for China that led to the Opium War - and the Russians messed around with it.

Afghanistan is oft occupied but rarely overcome. I dont see how this ever ends well for us. I dont even know what our objective is over there anymore... or if we have an objective how we achieve it.

Alexander the Great conquered Afghanistan. Did you know the city of Kandahar is actually their way of saying Alexandria?

The U.S. objective should be build infrastructure, schools, hospitals, towns, and cities. But the U.S. shouldn't be footing the bill alone, the UN should also invest to rebuild the country as well.

A nice place to start with rebuilding Afghanistan would be to destroy the poppi fields by dropping thermal (jelly) bombs every 3-6 months.

Amazingly(actually it isn't) the left since the last election has been pretty silent about wanting our troops home from Afghanistan and Iraq and hasn't been keeping daily updates on how many of our troops are dying over there anymore either.

Enlist and then tell your superiors your winning strategy.

I don't need to enlist when I can run for President and run the whole show. Obama isn't committed to the Afghan front. We just need to send more troops than they can handle.

They already achieved one - I don't think we'll be seeing any threats emminate from Afghanistan for awhile.

I think it is to create a pincer threat on Iran - 2 fronts for them to worry about

Conservatives believe Obama isn't committed to Afghan-stand, and Democrats believed GW Bush wasn't committed to stay in Afghan-stand and defeat the Taliban nor was Bush interested in capturing Osama-Bin-Hidden.

The last Admin. took their eye off of killing Osama and bringing Democracy to Afghan-stand, b/c more defense corporate money-spending could be won by invading and occupying IRAQ.
