college football is tough simply because the BCS is such a scam, if you want to follow a team taht can potentially win it all you are limited to about 10 teams. its hard to pick a team while having no geographical or emotional attachment to one.

Dude! I'm serious here I want to know what team you follow and why
I think this has the makings of a good thread and I have 2 ring of fame threads. ;D

I want a team for year in and year out, one that has a good clean program and a team first attitude IE not Florida or Florida St.
Boston Collage or Arizona are possibilities

BC is a great school, the campus is amazing, and Boston is a fantastic college town. Its a shame that they left the Big East, how nasty would that conference look with Miami, VT, and BC next to WV, Pitt, Rutgers, Louisville, and USF...
Syracuse really has fallen off of the map, shame.

Iowa Hawkeyes are my team. They are blue collar, underdog team, w/a great ZoneBlocking Oline. One of the best coached teams in college, and Kirk Frentz get the most out of his teams as anyone out there. Also, have a great young team, they have a true Fresh WR and RB (whiteboy) that are going to be really good.

It's a school from the heartland on the rise. Mizzou never had a great football program, but has recently shown signs of perhaps being a school to contend with. (Ranked high late in the season last year.)
Off to a good start this year. It's always fun to pull for an underdog!

I root for ASU, but I just enjoy watching the games.
Cal is a great team to watch this year as Best is a beast.
I moved to Alabama three years ago and watching the SEC is fun and intense. You can't go wrong picking Alabama as they should be competitive for years to come.

Maybe that's the problem with the Broncos.
You're in the west, the University of Utah. We start tailgating at 10 in the morning for home games, the fans are great (maybe that's because we start tailgating at 10 in the morning), for a non BCS team we were the #4 ranked team in 2005, the only undefeated team in the nation last year (and please, don't you BCS fans embarrass yourself by saying look at who they play because EVERY team has a majority of cream puff teams), they are from the Mountain West Conference, the conference that has won the most Bowl games, which can be largely attributed to U of U as they win their Bowl games, the whole surrounding Salt Lake county (1,000,000) are rabid fans of the Utes, and the best part.....you get to root against BYU!

Is the Big 12 consistently competitive amongst themselves or is it always Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas?

Nebraska is just now starting to get back to where they were but they are still a few years away. But they are far from being awesome.
Big XII is generally dominated by OU and Texas in the south. With Tech, A&M and OSU competing for leftovers depending on the year.
In the North, recently has been Mizzou and Kansas, prior to that was CU and KState and NU.
If KU and Mizzou can build on their recent successs, that and have a resurgance of Nebraska the North may start to compete with the South within 5 years.

I would seriously recommend a midwest school. Michigan State is my team and going to the games when fall hits with the changing leaves, cold eveings, and serious tailgates is something I look forward to every year. Do yourself a favor head to South Bend, Happy Valley, the Big House...somewhere where fall takes place (as in cold and changing leaves) and the people are passionate about football. There is no better experience.

Copied from Huskers.com
A Tradition of Excellence
For more than a century, the legacy of Nebraska football has been growing. With five national titles, 43 conference crowns and more than 800 all-time victories, the Cornhusker tradition is one of the richest in all of college football. The Huskers are one of only two teams in college football history to win three national titles in a four-year span, capturing crowns in 1994, 1995 and 1997, including perfect back-to-back seasons in 1994 and 1995.
Nebraska is one of just six schools all time with 800 or more victories, and the Huskers are easily college football's most successful program since 1970. Over the last 39 seasons, NU has amassed 383 victories, 27 more than the next most successful programs (Ohio State and Oklahoma, 356) entering the 2009 campaign.
Nebraska has made 45 all-time bowl appearances, including an NCAA record 35 straight from 1969 to 2003, and played on television nearly 300 times. In 2009, the Huskers will also extend their NCAA record sellout streak to 300 games at Memorial Stadium. Every game has been sold out at Memorial Stadium since 1962. Husker fans have been rewarded with win after win in Lincoln, as Nebraska lost just three home games during the entire decade of the 1990's. Nebraska has also finished in the Associated Press national rankings in 35 of the last 40 seasons.
Individually, Nebraska players have earned 106 first-team All-America certificates on the field, including 92 first-team selections from 75 players since 1960. NU's All-Americans include three Heisman Trophy winners and seven players who have won a nation-leading eight Outland Trophies. The Huskers also lead the nation with 98 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in the classroom, the most academic All-Americans for any team across all sports in the country. As a school, Nebraska also leads the nation with 269 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans across all sports, to go along with a Big 12-leading 93 percent graduation rate.
Nebraska is also one of the nation's most successful programs in sending players to the NFL. Since 1997, Nebraska has had 62 players selected in the NFL Draft, while no other Big 12 school has had more than 50.
Nebraska football is much more than talented athletes and coaches taking the field to play a game – it is a family. The fans, support staff and student-athletes are all Dedicated to Excellence through Integrity, Trust, Respect, Teamwork and Loyalty. It is this commitment on and off the field that makes Nebraska unique and assures that the rich tradition of the Huskers will keep growing for years to come.

I have three college teams. Growing up in L.A. my team was USC, so I always have a strong connection there. I think when you connect with a team when you are young, especially the one you identify with in high school, that connection will always remains pretty strong. I still remember the play from Pat Haden to John McKay Jr. in the Rose Bowl many moons ago. Right now, it would be easy to pick USC as your team. They are consistently at the top of the heap. It's easy to pick a winner.
Then, I spent a year at Berzerkly, so I have kind of a secondary connection to Cal. Not real strong, but I still follow them. They've got a RB this year name Jahvid Best who is very exciting to watch.
Finally, I finished up my college years at CU, so that's my strongest connection. I think when you actually go to the school you become absorbed into the tribe. I've had the longest ups and downs with the Buffs and that kind of burns an emotional connection into your psyche. Defend a team for a few seasons while they're down and they become "your" team. Plus, you invest your emotions into it in a lot of ways. Going through the whole Sal Aunese thing was a bonding experience. Then, there was a national championship and a Heisman for Rashaan Salaam after all those dark years in the 80s. You get invested in the team. I think it's tribal.
If you just want to pick somebody who you get to see on TV, pick Notre Dame. No matter how bad they stink, their games are still broadcast before anybody else's.

That was a good read. I think we can also be proud of our student athlete graduation rates: http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?SID=1144&CID=722328 At 83%, only service schools and a few academic powerhouses (Rutgers, ND, Vandy, etc.) are above Nebraska. Pretty cool for a state school/traditional football machine. OU and Texas are both in the low 40% rate.
Ultimately, though, what I love about being a Nebraska fan is the national fanbase. Most anyone with ties to the state is a fan, and they stay loyal no matter where they are. Sure, I see Bronco fans everywhere, but there's just something different in meeting a stranger in a Husker shirt. An immediate solidarity and familiarity. Hard to explain, but I think Joe Posnanski (my favorite sportswriter) put it very well a couple years back:
"You have to understand what Nebraska football means up here. It isn’t exactly religion the way Kentucky and North Carolina basketball is, and it isn’t exactly a birth-right like Alabama or Ohio State football, and it isn’t exactly a passion like Red Sox baseball in New England. No, here, Nebraska football defines precisely how people see themselves. Nebraska football, plainly, is who these people are."
