Broncos coach Josh McDaniels is "hopeful" that quarterback Kyle Orton will start in Denver's opener at Cincinnati on Sunday, the coach said today. Orton has practiced since Tuesday, while battling the dislocated knuckle he suffered during the preseason, and McDaniels said that "he's done fine. The ability to throw the ball doesn't seem to be hampered too much, and that's really what we're trying to focus on and make sure we go through the next few days here and not have any setbacks, and hopefully everything will be a go."

The optimistic coach also believes receiver Jabar Gaffney and rookie running back Knowshon Moreno will be able to play in the opener. Gaffney, recovering from a broken thumb, is "one of the toughest players I've
ever coached," McDaniels said, "and if he just keeps progressing and there's no setbacks, he should be good to go. He's very tough."

The first-rounder Moreno, the Georgia product who sprained his MCL on Aug 14, "is working hard every day to be ready to go at full-strength on Sunday," McDaniels said. "He's doing a nice job and progressing, so we're going to evaluate all those players with injuries in the next couple days and make sure we're fielding the healthiest and best 45 we can."

Receiver Brandon Marshall, who led Denver in receptions the past two years, has had a "good week of practice," according to McDaniels. "I'm hopeful all our players will contribute. Brandon certainly will. He had a good week of practice. Hopefully he'll have two more good days here. We're going to use a lot of people. It's going to be hot, the first game of the season and the first time all these guys will play four quarters worth of football. He should be out there a bunch."

Meanwhile, "Dos Cuatro" is ready for Ochocinco. Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey has defended the loquacious Chad Ochocinco before and "I love the way he talks," Bailey said. "He has respect for me, and I have respect for him. I know what he's capable of and he knows what I'm capable of. It's not like he's talking to belittle you. He's an entertainer, and he knows it, and he uses that ability to talk to the fullest. He gets to some people, but he knows he can't get to me."

Sounds like Gaffney and Orton are probable, Moreno is questionable and Marshall is definitely playing.

I just worry about rushing him into game action with his having missed so much of the preseason. I would be tempted to give him one more full week of contact in practice.

I doubt if they're doing much contact in practice right now.

McDaniels is "hopeful" Orton will be able to go?

Anyone else read that and just get the feeling that we'll be seeing Brandstater?

Hopeful? Yea, I'm not buying it. He's either dead-certain he'll play, or dead-certain he won't... imo.

But, he's doing the right thing. Keep 'em guessing.

Try Simms. If the rookie in, the season won't start off on good note.

Don't rush Moreno back please, we need him in the long haul.

Good news all over, time to win this game.

Sorry, should have said Simms. Forgot he was healthy...

Oh, I think they are still hitting at least a couple days during the week and he has had almost no contact. Remember he played against SF with less than a week of practice. Plus, he is still not at 100%.

I expect we'll see Orton start. He's not going to open the season with anybody else unless he has no other option. We'll just run more than we normally would I think. Besides he only has to throw it 3 yards so what's the difference?

I was thinking the same thing. Coach seems awful forthright concerning injuries considering the early precedent he tried to establish with the team, don't ya think? He's either had a total change of heart or he has something up his sleave. The simple fact that he's keeping people and opponents guessing is a good thing.

If you can't dazzle ;em with briliance, beffudle them with bullshiat.

Regardless, I doubt we hit the ground running smoothly.

Yes, because McDaniels is lying about ALLLLLL of it. We cant believe this crap. They are all probably lying on a slab at the morgue. :pity:

I dont want to rush Moreno in there if we can do without but I dont see something positive about going into the first game with a rookie QB. IF Orton has no trouble throwing, he needs to start.

This is exactly my opinion on Chad Johnson. The guy is all fun. There's no menace to his act at all. He's a blast.

Chad Johnson talking trash to other players through the media is akin to one of your buddies trash talking you before a game of Madden. It's completely harmless.

Chad Johnson just having fun and adding that wrestling type entertainment factor.

Having said that I think it's stupid to let any offense get there best player 1 on 1 a ton. The smart thing to do is make Cincy run the ball on you. Benson isn't that great and behind him is the promising rookie.

They don't block all that well for then though.

Why would Nolan make it easy by playing Bailey 1 on 1. I don't see it.

Plus with 3 good wr like cincy has the smart thing will be to play zones, keep them in front of you, then make the tackle. Stop the run, force long 3rd downs, and get pressure on the QB.

If Moreno is running around with little or no pain, no swelling etc, then he should play.

No reason to baby him. Broncos need him.

The can tell by how knee responds after he practices whether or not he should play.

It really is all about stability and then swelling. If the player says yeah it feels stable and runs well on it, then the next day it isn't swollen they will think he can play.

They will put him in pads on gameday and have him run through some drills, then make a decision.

It's not guesswork, they have a routine they use.

Otherwise players would just say I can play. They will look at knee, wiggle it around, see if its stable, see if its swollen, ask player to be honest on how it feels etc etc.

I would love any CB in the NFL to say I will be 1-1 with Marshall all day. IMO you send him deep every play and throw ball up in that situation. I will take our 6-5 230 pound, 4.4 running WR 1-1 in a jump ball with any player in the NFL outside of Fitz and Johnson.

I can't think of one CB in his right mind that would want that all game.

I'd make Palmer prove that ankle is sound. We gotta get pressure and make him prove he can move and throw on the run.

I kind of agree but Palmer has a higher passer rating when throwing the ball downfield than he does with the short stuff. While it may seem like a good idea to test his ankle, he also is a guy who can punish you with big plays.

Andre or Calvin?

Hmmm I forgot Calvin. I'd put him there also.

Still my point is leaving guys like Andre, Calvin, Fitz, Marshall 1-1 too much is insane. You won't see it much because defenses don't want to give up 140 yrds and 2 tds to the guy.

Defense not about man to man that much anymore.

It's more about zones and reacting quickly to the WR in your zone, keeping them in front of you, then making the tackle. Sure there is 1-1 matchups a lot but usually you would rather go 1-1 with a TE or RB then with the greatest WR's in the NFL.

Not saying we won't see it though maybe Bailey still is that good, I have my doubts though.

Nolan won't do it if he doesn't think Bailey can win it......at least I hope he won't.
