Big XII didn't have a great weekend.

CU, OSU, KState took bad losses this weekend. Iowa State lost to a team they should have lost to in in-state rival Iowa. Mizzou struggled with Bowling Green everyone else rolled though.

Of course, KU is still playing but they are up 34-7 and have the ball and if not for one broken play would be pitching a shutout.

That was a damn good game. OSU gave it everything they had. Tonight, a freshman QB named Barkley came of age. Joe McKnight was the difference. When he got going in the fourth quarter that's what turned it around for USC. Really fun game to watch. Both teams played their hearts out. That's why I love the college game.

Some shenanigans with the clock at the end, but good game Michigan.

:Broncos:

The shenanigans was with the two passes that they called on the last ND drive that stopped the clock and preserved two timeouts for Michigan. And the drive killing holding penalties.

Bates will do fine at USC....99% of the time, he will be working with more talent than any team he is facing and that really helps any coordinator.

To be honest, I think he is better than last year, but he is still terrible. Of course, our offensive line didn't do him any favors. Our defense played their hearts out last night, USC has an amazing ground game. Their freshman QB displayed flashes of greatness, but overall I think he was running a pretty vanilla O. But then again, I don't think Carroll is fully opening up the playbook for a freshman QB. Fu** off Tressel for not kicking a FG with 7 min left in the game. You have a kicker who has enough leg for a 50 yard FG, but your overly conservative a** wimped out. What is the worst that could happen. USC would have got the ball at the 36 instead of the 10, who cares, they would have been able to move the ball down the field with Carroll using all 4 downs. Another close game for OSU goes the way of their competitor.

It's a little too early to say considering Tate has played 2 games total, one against Western Michigan(who lost to Indiana) and a mediocre ND team and both were at home. Let's at least wait til week 5 at East Lansing before we start talking who is better overall. Also, Pryor is the better athlete we just don't want to evolve...no telling how good Pryor could be if he went to UM where that offense is tailored to a player like him.

BTW, Why would the Buckeyes fear Michigan. They have dominated them for several years now and are continually out recruiting them. In all reality, I would be completely happy with a 9-3 year and going to a good bowl game. They are in the process of building something and that takes a little time. At the start of the year I was hoping for 7-5 or 8-4. Michigan is playing a completely different brand of football and it takes a few years to overhaul an entire roster to get players to fit your system.

I hope the Buckeyes have your same outlook on overlooking Michigan....don't pay any attention to us poor Wolverines....and before you know it, we will have the upper hand again.

I think it is safe to say that neither team ever overlooks the other. And I don't want Michigan to be terrible. Hell, I don't care if they win every game except one. It's good for the Big 10 if Michigan returns to their elite form. I'm not denying that they are better, but I'm going to hold out until they beat a solid team before i declare that they are back.

Why Dan Hawkins won't be fired this season (from Denver Post):

BOULDER — It would likely cost Colorado well over $3 million to make a change in head football coaches this year, CU athletic director Mike Bohn confirmed to The Denver Post on Tuesday.
Before answering a question about costs associated with a coaching change, Bohn made it clear that he fully supports coach Dan Hawkins and expects Hawkins will build a successful program at CU.
"To be honest with you, we haven't even begun to look at all (the potential costs)," Bohn said. "But if that happened, you would have to figure in relocation costs and so many other things with new coaches and new staff. That's not something we're focused on at this point, however."
Last October, Hawkins received a two-year contract extension through the 2012 season. The new contract eliminated a clause in Hawkins' original five-year contract that limited CU's liability to $850,000 per year.
If Hawkins were to be terminated after this season, his current contract would allow him to recover the three-year income totals from his base salary ($518,773 for 2010-12); income from radio, TV and other appearances ($1,729,572); summer camp revenues ($173,965); and supplemental income from sponsorship support ($704,902). That adds up to $3,127,212.
Additionally, if Hawkins were to be fired before Jan. 31, 2010, he would receive a prorated amount from this year's compensation package.
Additional expenses, including relocation costs and the cost of hiring a new coach, probably would increase the final tally to about $3.4 million, Bohn said.

Fear? No. Increasingly worried? Sure. A few weeks ago I told my friend(mich fan) that there's no reason for the blue to not start 4-0 and end up with an 8-10 win season. Our meeting this season should at least be a toss up especially in Ann Arbor, and it's better for the game and for the Big 10 when we're both strong teams.

Were you frustrated by VT's run play calling at all? It seemed to me (in the 1st half at least) you had at least 4 yards every time you ran it up the middle, yet kept going outside for no gain. I was just surprised you didn't exploit it more early on.

Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by our run D as a whole, especially the second half. Really was a good defensive battle that came down to one big play.

Was I alone in thinking the spread going into the Florida-Tennessee game was a joke? Florida was a 30 point favorite! That's absolutely insane against a rival that, yes, is coming off a tough season and transition, but has a very good defense and plenty of talent. And, you know, a pulse.

Between the Kiffin trash talk "story" and the adoration of all things Florida, apparently bettors went off the deep end. I'm no Vols fan, but I was glad to see them show they weren't the complete pushover that line suggested.

Punting the ball was the right call...VT's O did nothing in the 2nd half and Neb. D was playing really good! They also didn't have any time outs. If they're around the 35 then i say go for it. I couldn't believe on the play that VT scored the game winning TD the LB's and d line didn't run after him, seemed like they were all spying him. Poor execution in the redzone costed Neb. the game in the end!

Suh is a beast btw...i thought after last year he was gonna go pro!

Punting the ball was the right choice? We punted the ball from the 37. Are you telling me that 2 difference between the 35 and the 37 is the reason you wouldn't go for it? It was our game to lose pretty much the whole game (two plays won the game for Va Tech). The problem is we needed to go for the kill and we didn't. As you said the D was playing great so put the ball in your QB's hand and end the game, if they don't then the D should be able to do its job. When your team is averaging 5.8 yards per carry you have to trust them to pick up one yard to win the game, and not rely on your D to stop them from going 80 yards.

Greg Paulus had a nice game for Syracuse today.

24/35 for 346 yards and 2 TDs with a rushing TD as well.

It amazes me that he made the transition from playing basketball at Duke to playing QB at Syracuse and is producing after being away from football for all that time.

That said, I am glad Paulus did not end up playing for Michigan, as was rumored.

That would have done nothing but complicate things with Tate Forcier and Dernard Robinson making plays at QB for Michigan as true freshman.

Youre right about 30 points being a big spread but before Tebow fumbled, it was on the verge of being 30-6 with Tennessee showing no life.

If I was a USC fan this would be my thought: what is wrong with our offensive coaching? I realize Sarkisian was their OC for a while and apparently has done a good job right away at UW, but man do they seem to underachieve given the talent they have.

If you lose to a Washington or an Oregon St on the road once or twice in a decade it's an understandable upset. They do it pretty much every year now! Obviously Carroll and Co. do a hell of a recruiting job there, but that offense gets shut down by crappy, crappy teams on a predictable basis.

Playing in the Pac 10 and with their talent, I would seriously have some regrets as an SC fan that they don't have one or two more BCS titles to their name.

OU gets hammered for underachieving in bowl games, but USC has an even more inexplicable problem with consistently losing to the worst teams in their conference. Just strange that what could have been one of the most dominant dynasties in the history of the sport has been tripped up by yearly losses to unranked teams.

Not trying to play the victim here, but OSU gets sh*t on way more than any other program by the mainstream media when they lose games. Of course, I'm sure that resentment comes from the fact that they lose the big games and people are pissed off at the system. They think that their team is better and OSU has no right being there, but it's not like OSU is going to decline the invitation if accepted. It's just a broken system. Anyways you are right in the fact that USC has more talent than just about anybody and they lose these in conference games to lesser opponents year after year. They were so pumped up for last week, did they overlook Washington? Did Barkley really make that much of a difference? Did Sarkisian have the advantage on other PAC 10 teams because of his insight? I'm sure all of these factors came into play yesterday. USC is the OSU (Penn St. is also pretty solid) of the PAC 10, they seem to be the only good team in a shi**y conference.

Ohio State gets hammered and its unfair. The whole notion that they cant win big games is laughable considering Ohio State won national championship agaisnt a team that no one thought they belonged on the field with.

In 2006, no one questioned whether Ohio State belonged in the NC game.

In 2007, they were underdogs against LSU.

In 2005, they lost a close won against Texas but that was the year Texas went undefeated and won the NC. But the next year Ohio State won at Texas.

Meanwhile, you get Carroll who gets a pass even though USC lost to Texas because he mismanaged timeouts and some would even say for not having Bush on the field when they were stuffed.

He might be smart to come back for his senior season and get some more experience.

Vince Young would snicker at that completion % for ****'s sake.

I don't think Indiana is that good of a team.

You keep making the mistake of thinking that I think that Michigan is an elite team right now.

You have to remember when I say they are 'back' I mean they are back and on their way to being a good/great team again. They were 3-9 last year....they are 4-0 this year and playing some scrappy football.

Michigan is not a top ten team this year. I had them figured for 7-5 this year. If they go 9-3, I would be very happy. I view this as a building process that is in year two. I don't view it as an all or nothing season. Once Michigan hired Rodriguez and completely scrapped the way they have played for decades, I knew it was going to take a few years.

You just worry about your Buckeyes. I am happy watching Michigan grow and evolve into a different team. Enjoy stale Tressel ball while you can. The nepotism in that program is starting to show. Michigan is not an elite team....but they are on the upswing.

First....I agree, Indiana played well enough that they probably deserved to win

When I say nepotism, I mean that Tressel sometimes stays too loyal to his assistants and often times stays in-house, when he probably should be looking outside the program to bring in someone with fresh ideas. Just seems like the program has an awful lot of inbreeding, which is ok for a period of time, but after a while, I think it leads to stagnant thinking. I just think things are getting a little stale. Ohio State could draw in a wealth of talented assistants to help get the Buckeyes over the hump so they can win some games on the big stage.

I am not a fan of defensive coordinator Jim Heacock...I know he has had some good defenses, but it seems like he ****s the bed on the big stage and has a hard time formulating defenses to stop innovative spread/spread option offenses. I would can him and bring in someone young and innovative from outside the program.

Houston leading Tech in the largest crowd in Houston Cougar history.

Tell you what, if Houston runs the table they may be in the running for at least a BCS bowl. That offense they have is damn near unstoppable.

Yeah, the bad news is only a little over 30,000. When they played at the Dome, I thought they must have gotten bigger crowds, like in the Cotton Bowl years of the SWC.

Yeah, OSU has a lot of talent at LB. That is why I wasn't worried about OSU taking a hit when Moeller was lost for the year after he was assaulted at a Florida bar. This brings up another complaint I have with Tress, I don't believe that he plays his best/most athletic players. He would rather play a senior who has payed his dues over an underclassman who has greater ability. Man, I'm pissed that Penn St. lost, here come the talking heads at the mother ship again (ESPN). This Tebow injury may be a great diversion. :wiggle:

You could make the arguement that Michigan should be 1-3, but arguements don't matter, records do. They are 3-1 and are winning games that they would have lost last year. I don't know if they are ready to own the Big 10 like Colin Cowherd stated, but they are playing tough, exciting, and competitive football this year. If they well know Big 10 powers (Ohio St. Penn St., Iowa, Michigan) continue to play decent football and the lesser known programs continue to progress (Minnesota & Michigan St.), Big 10 might be competitive on the national stage in a few years.

Toledo came back to beat Ball State in a wild game....37-30.

Toledo was winning late, Ball State scored and instead of going for the tie, they went for 2 to take the lead 30-29 with 43 seconds left. Toledo then got a nice kickoff return and Opelt hit Stephen Williams from 51 yards out to win the game.

That offense is electric.

QB Aaron Opelt had 422 yards passing and 5 TDs, WR Stephen Williams (6'5 200 pound good NFL prospect) had 10-231-2 TDs and 18 year old stud true freshman WR and local kid Eric Page had 11-152-1 TD.

Outside of the Ohio State game, they have had some monster games on offense.

493 yards versus Purdue, 624 yards versus Colorado, 566 yards versus Florida International, and 479 yards against Ball State.

lawls, hard to come back from having your Heisman trophy winning QB go down with an injury for a month, your All-American TE and arguably the best TE in the country go down for the season and now end up losing your best WR.
The offense just doesn't have a real identity, the playcalling is atrocious and Landry Jones doesn't have the accuracy Bradford has. When Broyles went out, there wasn't any real huge receiving threat out there and Miami really just teed off on stuffing the run.
As well, nobody playing RT could block worth a damn.

Ranking any of the one loss teams seems virtually impossible at this point. Like you said, our Huskers barely lost on the road to VT and smoked the Arkansas St. team the nearly toppled Iowa. Yet, we also don't have a marquee win, which I have to admit Miami got last night (can't really call FSU a great win anymore. A nice one, but nothing special). This could be another mess at the end of the season. Championship would be Alabama-Florida winner vs. .... Big XII champ (if Texas)? 1 loss Pac-10 champ? 1 loss ACC champ? Boise?

On a random note, I thought the celebration penalty on Georgia was bull****. I somewhat understand the rule, but in that kind of situation (last minute, huge touchdown) how can you throw that flag. Unless something was said on the field that we didn't hear, I saw nothing that was unsportsmanlike toward the other team. Just looked like a bunch of excited kids celebrating together.

20 points in 4 minutes. Sure we looked like crap on offense and special teams for 45 minutes, but showed why we're a legit team by making the big plays to swing the game back in our favor. Most important game of the season, IMO, and we never gave up until the tide turned. And did it ever turn.
