Bengals first-round choice Andre Smith's efforts to get on the field after his 32-day contract holdout took a step backward when he suffered a fracture in a foot during a non-contact drill Tuesday.
It is not known how long he will be out, but the fracture will likely prevent him from being healthy enough to play in the Bengals opener. Smith is currently on a roster exemption granted by commissioner Roger Goodell because of his late arrival. The exemption lasts until last week.
Smith is the sixth pick in the NFL draft and the most recent to sign. Michael Crabtree of the 49ers is the only unsigned first-rounder.

MARVIN LEWIS STATEMENT ON ANDRE SMITH INJURY

"Andre suffered a small fracture in his left foot during a non-contact drill. Our medical staff tells me the injury will not require surgery. It's too soon to predict how long it will be before he can return to practice, but it looks like he's going to miss a few weeks."

How often do injuries like this happen to rookies after they sit out of training camp? Every time it seems like.

I think he's going to be a giant bust. The guy is a head case and will blow up if the Bengals don't regulate his eating.

Also, I think Doom would work him if he played week one anyways. I think Doom will have at least two sacks in weak 1.

That sucks. Not just because I hate seeing players get hurt, but I wanted to see Dumervil own Andre Smith in his first NFL game.

Well if he busts by eating his way out of the league he's not gonna get paid. Weight-related stipulations out that ass on his deal.

I really hope our defense can fluster Palmer. I think we can finally create some turnovers the first week

What Marvin Lewis was thinking as he spewed that impotent statement:

This fat bastard plays games with us for 4 friggin months, eats like Oprah at Porkapalooza, cashes our first check, and breaks his damn foot changing his maxi pad. This makes me very angry. Very angry indeed. Thankfully, I coach for the Bengals, who should've fired my arse years ago.

Palmer has not been practicing, bum ankle I believe. We might have a shot week 1.

Overweight out of shape = Foot fractures It seems to happen alot. Not always but more than you'd think. Big men/women's feet can take a beating. Yao ming as an example. Hope this isn't a chronic deal for the guy could ruin his career..But who's starting in his spot right now?

if we have a good game geting to the QB and force some Turnovers, that could set a tone for the defense to build upon the rest of the year.

it just takes one game to spark a team

I think he's going to be alright. Not so sure about their O-line and their TE situation is a mess already. Nice WR corps as always and Denver will have to deal with Benson/Bernard Scott at RB.

Anyone know who their starting left tackle is? I just peeked at their roster and I didn't recognize any names.

A "large" source of comedy this offseason was former Alabama tackle Andre Smith running a 40-yard dash at his pro day without a shirt on (http://blackandteal.com/2009/03/12/andre-smith-40-yard-dash-pro-day-video/).
But now, Smith's weight is no laughing matter.
According to ESPN.com's James Walker, who follows the AFC North, the Bengals included a weight clause into his six-year, $42 million deal (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp09/news/story?id=4437525), which includes $21 million guaranteed.
If Smith, who is listed at 335 pounds, goes over 350, he risks "losing a significant portion of his salary," according to Walker.
Walker's source said Smith's weight can be checked each week by the Bengals during the season.
The clause is believed to have been a major sticking point in negotiations (Smith held out for 30 days, and missed all of training camp and three preseason games). The Bengals even sent representatives to visit Smith for a weight check days before they took him with the sixth pick of the draft

Agreed. In 2005 it only took a play (Champ's pick 6 vs Brees opening the 2nd half)

how sad is it that this guy who appears to be in worse shape than the majority of the posters on this board is going to make more money over the next 6 years than probably any of us will ever see in our lifetime

exactly, it was looking like we were about to open the season 0-2 and suck that year, but that play turned it around and led to us going 13-3

I see plenty of ugly-bodied people in the flesh, but they really didn't have a choice. This however is borderline exhibitionist behavior... maybe something along the lines of outraging public decency. Women with smaller boobies have been ticketed for flashing said boobies.

Edit: I have been filter pwned. T!tties. T!ts. Suck it, filter..
