Bernanke, Gates, LaHood, Huntsman all given White House gigs


WASHINGTON - For all the Republican howling about Barack Obama radically steering the government to the left and leading the nation toward socialism, some of his major appointments are Republican men and women of the middle.

In what may be the top two national posts in light of today's crises at home and abroad, Obama stuck with the picks of former President George W. Bush in reappointing Fed chief Ben Bernanke and Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

Bernanke last week was given another four-year term to preside over nothing less than saving the U.S. economy and then keeping it strong. He was appointed by Bush in 2006 after a short stint as chairman of Bush's Council of Economic Advisers. Gates was kept in his Pentagon post to wind down the war in Iraq and build up the one in Afghanistan.

The notion that he is moving the government to the left "is laughable, it's utterly laughable," said Thomas E. Mann, a government scholar at the Brookings Institution. Mann said the decision to keep Bernanke and Gates "doesn't buy him a thing with Republicans but was a sign of good judgment in both cases" because Bernanke and Gates were doing good jobs.
Along with Gates and Bernanke, they include:

Sheila Bair as holdover chairwoman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. She has played a major role in the management of the financial crisis. A one-time unsuccessful candidate for a Kansas House of Representatives seat, Bair was appointed by Bush in June 2006. Forbes Magazine ranks her as the second most powerful woman in the world behind German chancellor Angela Merkel.
Ray LaHood, a former congressman from Illinois, as transportation secretary. He was elected as part of the "Gingrich Revolution" by Republicans in 1994's elections and was so trusted by both Republicans and Democrats that he was selected to preside over the House during the impeachment vote against President Bill Clinton.
Former Rep. John McHugh from upstate New York, as Army secretary. McHugh was known by his House colleagues for an even temperament and willingness to work with Democrats.
Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who was a Mormon missionary in China in his youth, as ambassador to China.
Francis Collins, an evangelical Christian, as director of the National Institutes of Health.

we will see how Obama feels when Gates has his generals ask for another 20 thousand to 40 thousand troops to win the fight in Afghanistan. Already military mumbling that elements in Obamas admin are whispering and balking at the war.

How will people feel if Obama says this is a war we need to fight, then when his first wave of troops not enough decides to give up?

Or how will you feel if he sends the 20 thousand plus new troops and casualties get really high? Will Obama's base support him in this war?

As far as bernake goes Clinton and Bush both used Greenspan, its not uncommon.

Paulson tarp thingy actually making money on some banks. Depending on how many don't pay back it could be significantly less then the 7 billion he spent on it. Really good news for Obama that Bush bailout working.

because the article stated that because Obama kept Gates, that shows he isn't left. But the real test is will he listen to gates and send more troops to war in afghanistan.

We're so steeped in the momentum of our own ignorance, bigotry, lack of awareness about the world, dissasociation from the larger global trends around us, etc...90% of the people have no idea what's even going on in the world, let alone what to do about it. It was Bush and Paulsons baby though. He did what a good President does, you write it, then force it down Congresses throat getting whatever votes you can.

What you don't do IMO is just tell them to write the bill, then not come out and say exactly what you want in the bill, then call out the other party and blame them for not reforming health care.

He surrendered to Wall Street and is waging two wars on their behalf.

We in the USA have never had a leftist president -- at any rate -- not since Thomas Jefferson.

Obama's only chance to turn things around and save his presidency would be to reverse himself -- by firing T Geithner, and all of the other high officials at Treasury, then appoint a new slate of Treasury officials committed to the US Constitution.

He would then announce his support for legislation to cancel the federal reserve act of 1913 --

As soon as he moves this reform through Congress and signs the bill Obama would then give the order for the Treasury Department to print greenbacks.

Obama would also push through a revised version of the 1935 Glass-Steagall Act to end the wild speculation and hedge fund and derivative ponzi schemes that have destroyed the US financial system.

This would bring an end to the era of the Banksters.

Then Obama would move rapidly to return to the gold standard --

Obama would also declare the wars over and bring the US troops home -- slash the obscene Pentagon budget -- (it's now what? $700+ billion)

and return this nation to rule by law -- meaning the US Constitution.

Of course, the CIA would try to kill Obama -- but if the people of this country take to the streets in the millions to support him -- we could actually win.
