View Full Version : A date which will live in infamy

The date: Sep 7, 2008
The place: FOXBOROUGH, Mass.
The play: Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard falling on Tom Brady’s left knee.

This single play changed fortunes of three NFL teams (along with my fantasy team).

Just for an argument sake, let's assume this freak play never occurred:

New England Patriots
- A little-known career back-up qb named Matt Cassel started a first football game since his high school days. Even with him, Patriots nearly made it to the playoffs. With Brady, they might've won the whole thing.
- Had Brady not gotten hurt, Cassel never could've shown he can be a NFL starter. He most likely would've signed an extension with NE for a modest salary, going into this season as Brady's back-up.
- After the season, NE traded Cassel along with Vrabel for 34th overall pick (Patrick Chung, SS), the heir apparent to Rodney Harrison (according to NE)

Matt Cassel:
-He went from 2008 salary of $520k to Six years $63 mil max and $28 mil guaranteed.

Kansas City Chiefs:
- Traded their second pick for a very overrated career backup QB Cassel and paid him $63 mil for Six years, thus putting the franchise back at least few years. (Also signed ex-Patriot VP of Player Personnel Pioli as their GM)

Denver Broncos:
- After firing Shanahan, Bowlen hires young McDaniels who was credited with turning little known Cassel into a Pro-bowl QB, which played a huge role in him getting hired as HC over Steve Spagnuolo and Jim Schwartz.

After that, we all know the rest of the story...

One must wonder if Brady hadn't gotten hurt, would McDaniels still have been a high commodity at the end of the season and eventually landed him in Denver? Who knows?

But it's interesting ... ::)

Interesting thread. Here's what I'm wondering. Can any hardcore football historians recall events like this that shaped multiple franchises?

or dwayne "hands of stone" bowe's mishandling of the on side kick that would have sent us to the playoffs and possibly avoiding the firing of shanny?

Interesting.

Also, the "trading" of Mike Vick for LT was pretty huge for a few teams.

Of course, that is assuming Mike Vick still gets into all the trouble, etc. Being across the country, that may not have been the case.

Im sure Cassel is thrilled he is making so much money for playing decent but not great on a loaded team

That is until 30 years from now when he has daily migraines from all the concussions he is gonna take behind that excuse of a line he has in KC

even if doesnt run an illegal underground dog fighting ring, he couldnt pass the ball worth ****

Chargers definitely got the better end of that deal, better end of the Manning/Rivers deal as well

Yet Skippy McBelichick wanted to trade for Cassel so badly that he pissed off Cutler in the process and instead of manning up and telling Cutler to stop crying and STFU he sent him (a PRO BOWL QB, btw) to Chicago for of all people the Geico Caveman.

Gee, which franchise again was set back "at least a few years"????? Hilarious!

Agreed on all accounts. As for the last part... I agree that Rivers is a better QB, but Manning has a ring. That trumps, somewhat. I mean, at this point, if you're an SD fan, wouldn't you rather the ring?

It's all speculation at this point and nothing more...

Well they would of course rather have the ring, but the Chargers are a better team with Rivers, Kading, and Merriman than they would be with just Eli.

I dont want to downplay Elis performance in the playoffs, but its not like the carried the Giants to the superbowl

No. I simply stated facts that occurred since Brady's injury. Whereas in your post, you've created a scenario that never happened in first place. Apples and oranges.

You think all of this was happenstance? ROFL!

McKid was nudged your way to destroy you from within while simultaneously assuring that we will have humbled and compliant Offensive Coordinator in Kansas City when he is fired from Denver and Gailey has been given the ass-boot.

Crennel will be on-board next year I assure you, and then the fun really starts.

Hell, you think it's been nightmarish in Denver? Just wait 'till you see the Black-Ops we've got planned for AJ Smith!

Best...Off Season...EVAH!

Have to say that if Pollard doesn't injure Brady, Pats go deep post-season, probably win the superbowl and McD is an even HOTTER commodity.

If Bowe could hold onto a ****ing football, however...

not thinking too much into it but Eli Manning doesnt go to SD so they draft Rivers. Those changes two teams right there. We also figure draft orders might have been changed for this scenario and also the Colts and the Broncos when Elway threatened to play baseball instead.
