Gov. Bill Ritter's plan to cut the state budget through inmate releases could reduce Colorado's prison population by 1,000 in a year and immediately save $19 million.
It will also almost certainly accelerate the commission of new crimes, and could force layoffs from a privately run prison, experts said.
Ritter's plan calls for trimming parole supervision for some inmates already out of prison, and releasing some non-sex-offender inmates early and placing them on parole. A total of 5,700 inmates or parolees could see their status change as a result of Ritter's cut.
A Metropolitan State College of Denver professor says it's unavoidable that a large number of those prisoners or parolees will commit new crimes.
"The recidivism rate in Colorado is between 40 and 60 percent within five years, depending on types of crimes," Metro State criminal justice professor Joseph Sandoval said. "I do think that the risk of release is that some will go on a crime spree and there may be a smaller amount that commit crimes that are heinous."
In Democrat parlance, this is called a "voter registration drive".

I don't have Colorado's budget in front of me but I'm sure they have entire state-paid departments and commissions I'd slash or eliminate before I got around to releasing criminals from jails.
Does Colorado pay for any sort of "arts commission"? Kill it. Government shouldn't be funding art. How about we ask the Governor and every member of the legislature to drop one office flunkie from their staff? Does the Governor have an official state plane? Sell it on E-bay. Does the state own any Bronco luxury boxes? Sell 'em.
See, liberals love to claim that tax increases are necessary because any cuts will mean a loss of police or fire or EMS or something the public sees as critical when there is a ton of waste and fraud and patronage that could be slashed from government without getting rid of any police, fire or EMS.
So liberals propose stunts like releasing prisoners claiming they just don't have the money in hopes of duping people into raising taxes to fund their behemoth government spending projects.
While the rest of America has to live within their means, government just grows bigger and bigger.

Yet democrats can't figure out why they are labeled soft on crime. Takes multiple advanced degrees apparently. Looks like the people of Colorado who have children should watch out since usually when max criminals are let out, child molesters seem at the top of the list.

Ooops. The rightards are wrong again. That shoot from the hip thing just never seems to work:
Over the next decade, California's legislature, dominated by Democrats, passed more than 1,000 laws increasing mandatory prison sentences. The climax came in 1994 with the enactment of the "three strikes" law mandating 25-years-to-life sentences for most offenders with two previous serious convictions. "People have this image of California beach politics and the left coast," said state Sen. Gloria Romero, a Democrat from Los Angeles. "The truth is California is a law-and-order state."

The only governmental entity that has more people in prison than California is the federal government.

It doesn't help we were the birthplace of the crips and bloods, plus we have tons of illegals and mexican organized crime problems.
Honestly Calif should send a bill to the feds to house any illegals that are arrested for crimes. I mean it is there job to protect the borders right?
