Dear Orange Maners:

As many of you know, some more than others, I've gone through a devastating year in 2009 which includes many things I haven't shared with the board. The combination of traumatic life events, deep emotional loss and unneeded stress has stretched me to the breaking point. In the opinion of a licensed expert (not me, obviously) our recent conversations have led she and I to conclude I need a long, long rest from this site.

For these reasons, Iíve decided to take an indefinite leave of absence from the Orange Mane. Iíll still check in from time to time to read through PMs and even browse a thread or two but considering the present ďstate of the board,Ē itís not a positive environment for my recovery at this time. I want to thank everyone on this site with whom Iíve shared wonderful conversation and debate and am so appreciative of the friendships Iíve made with Kaylore, Oskie, Apa, SoCal and others that I hope to continue even during my absence from this site.

Thank you in advance for your support and I hope everyone enjoys this season of Broncos football.

Sincerely,
Montrose

with the number of f-ing moron chicken little retards on this site, i think all knowledgeable posters should probably find somewhere else to go. this place gets more and more ridiculous by the year, to the point that its almost annoying to even come here anymore.

Focusing on real life sounds like a good idea dude. Oh and don't be so damn hard on yourself. Just being alive and healthy is reason enough to be thankful. Save some time and energy for the Omane tailgate. Hope you can make it. You won't miss much by taking a break from this place.

Montrose,
You should know that when I first started on this board about a year ago now...wow how time flies when one is wasting it on the internet. ;D When I asked Oskie about who was one of the best guys to read on here, he was very specific about you and a few others. From what I have read of your postings, he was absolutely right. Your input will be missed, but I know for me the 12 days away from internet I had, the Mane, etc was very good for me. Best of luck to you and hope to get to meet up with you someday when I get back from England, but of course if you were ever over here, more then welcome to say hello.

Montrose I really have enjoyed your camp reports and insights on Bronco football. There once was a sportscaster in Denver named Mike Wolff who used to say "In the department store of life, sports is the toy department". Sounds like it is time for you to explore other areas of the store - I wish you the best in your recovery.

Sometimes a break away from the Mane is a very good thing. Not everybody is going to share feelings and opinions and not everybody reacts the same way from being attacked for their feelings. Montrose has a strong affinity for guys like Alphonso Smith and rightfully so. I've learned a lot about football in general and specifically the guys that Montrose informs me of. Fortunately, I'll still get to hear his points and his outstanding insight won't be missed... for me. For all of you, well I guess it's too damned bad that you will have to deal with the occasional 13-3 optimism from Raj that also goes along with the detailed explanations of Nolan's D and McD's O. Did you know that Raj watched every snap of the Pats offense last year so that he could understand what McD's offense was all about? He did that for us Maners so that he could go to camp and identify how our players fit into McD's offense and report on it. So he's more optimist than pessimist... that's a good reason to bag on him non-stop. Hopefully a couple weeks will be plenty for him to refresh, but if it's longer the Mane has lost some great insight from a heck of a guy.

Get your mind right buddy and I'll talk with you soon.

I remember the last time we had any sort of winning streak going, all you saw was misery around here. We'd win a game and this place was like a morgue.... thread after thread looking for any negative people could find in a loss.

But, it stars at the top. You have the site owner trashing the organization/owner like a child (and getting spanked for it)... and his little gaggle of followers trying to suck up to him by posting equally idiotic takes.

I'm all for "freedom of the post" that is, people have a right to voice their opinions on the Broncos... I don't have a problem with this.

A lot of people think that I should just be here to serve, and not participate and voice my own opinions. I don't think that would be much fun for me. I think I'm entitled to my opinions.

And if my tone of, "well, I don't like what's happened, but the only thing we can do is look at what gets put on the field and evaluate it from there" is negative, then I guess I'm just a negative guy.

Sometimes I wish Taco would post exactly he spends on this place. Yes some of it is recouped through Ads and BroncoBuff Telethons but I know how much he spends on just a few things and it isn't something I could afford.

So maybe before bashing the guy and how he runs his site take a step back and think that you physically type the address of this place into your browser. You choose to come here and read his negative takes. You don't pay for access so how can you even be close to disappointed.

That said I hope Montrose can come back sooner than later. He is a genuinely great person and only means the best. But sometimes you have to deal with your issues and if you find this place contributing to those rather than providing a release you need to go and figure things out. Hopefully you come back and have different perspective.

Popps last year was bashing the Broncos all the time. He never once criticized himself last year for bashing Shanny, Bowlen and the Broncos.

The only person I bashed was maybe Engelberger.

I loved Shanahan and while critical of his later moves, always was a fan.

It's not about criticizing, it's about people being miserable when we win, and happy when we lose.

Good luck my friend, if the Mane affects your life a lot then indeed it is time to take a break. Otherwise this is just where folks check into the asylum for a post or ten. If it's any more than that then stay off the net for a while. That goes for folks other than Montrose, you know who you are.

Also, don't go gay on us man, not that there is anything wrong with that.

But, each to their own.

i think we are one in the same. people criticize us for liking the moves the team makes, its sad, and they dont realize that i dont think either of us constantly praise the FO, rather are just waiting to see how they perform and stuff. last year, i was pissed that shanahan kept starting webster and winborn over woodyard and larsen, the obvious better players. this year, we dont even know how the team will look in real game situations or who is even starting.

its fun actually enjoying the games and being optimistic about the team every year until we have a real reason not to be. evne then, those things can be corrected the next year/offseason.

Just a suggestion.

Drek
08-15-2009, 07:42 PM
It's definitely tough seeing the negative stuff. But what am I going to do? Mandate that everybody be happy?

Maybe just put out some basic ground rules so that we don't have football specific discussions turning into an electronic version of play ground insults that goes unchecked in roughly 75% of the threads on here now?

I've made that suggestion before though. I think the hands off moderation is wonderful, to a point. Fans from competing teams, even division rivals, should be welcomed and heated debate is the lifeblood of these kinds of forums. When it devolves into personal insults and the occasional internet tough guy routine is when it crosses a line. If someone can't handle a random stranger saying disparaging things about them online I'd generally say toughen up, but knowing that there is some oversight causes people to at least tighten up the mental filter and think before they hit the little post button.

Anyways, your board, your rules. Best of luck with it and all that.

Be back in 30 minutes!
Seriously though RJ might be onto something. Some new moderator blood might be a breath of fresh air for the site. This isn't a knock against any mod as I think they are doing just fine but nothing wrong with a little change now and again.

I don't remember it that way. You were very negative a lot of last year, but hey I could be wrong. I don't think I am but I can't remember what I did yesterday.....

In my experience on message boards, people remember and read things how they want to filling up their pre-conceived notions on a poster or an opinion.

For the longest time people thought I thought Vince Young was better than Cutler. Never the case. They thought because I enjoyed watching Vince Young play that I thought he should be with the broncos. Again, never the case. Everytime Vince Young made a **** up or did something dumb, some stupid ass poster would chime in "Alec is gonna go ballistic" which was retarded as I was merely a fan of watching him play,

But these perceptions become message board "fact" when so many people want to see things this way.

I view Popps differently than Taco does. To me, Popps makes many good observations about the team in general, but like most posters here and everywhere on the interwebz, has knee jerk reactions and generally can be an ass.

Everyone here thinks Popps hated Cutler, hated Shanny, hated everything about our team but the reality is he has been bitching about defense for going on 6 years it seems and has merely been critical of moves that have not helped our most glaring weaknesses.

Now my view is undoubtably a rosier view of Popps than the actual and your view of Popps is a darker view than actual and the reality of Popps is probably somewhere in the middle.

The cliques over the years change with the opinions of whats going on. For a great deal of the time I was against the pro-Cutler crowd because I felt/feel that he is a big game choker and has been since College. His cannon of an arm not withstanding, I do not/did not feel he was the best solution for the Broncos. I have been on the opposite end of the spectrum from many posters in this regard and yet some of those same posters now are pro-McD and pro what we are doing now and the cliques have changed. I am on their side of the opinion road now.

I agree. Wanting to allow people to have free discussion doesn't mean you need to give them Carte Blanche to act like douchebags. I'd love to see the mods start cracking down on the idiots sidetracking threads over issues that have already been beat to death.

Does anyone else see the irony in how this thead played out?

Yes.

As to some of the discussion, I think it is unrealistic to think you can get rid of differing opinions, or even negativity. Besides the fact people hold different opinions of how things have gone down in the past and present, and how good or bad things will be in the future, you also have some people that are inherently positive and others negative.

However, these differences of opinions are what make message boards interesting, IMO. How boring would it be if everyone had the exact same opinion and just posted "I agree" or +1?

So, since passion is part of being a fan, I think everyone has to understand that people are going to be passionate and feel very strongly that their opinion is 'right'. Where problems come in is when people feel so strongly that their opinion is right, that they start attacking those that disagree with them or become offended when someone disagrees, taking it as a personal attack, rather than simply a difference of opinion.

As someone who is mostly an outsider, but has lurked or posted here on and off for years, and seen some of you guys hit the Mane Refugee thread on Mania/Broncos Country, I can make an observation.

This message board is deemed pretty much anything goes by those that know it, but don't post much on it. That rep comes both from people coming here, as well as seeing Mane posters in threads like the Mane refugee thread on Mania. In that thread, which people go to when this server goes down, it is very common for Mane posters to attack Mania/Broncos Country posters and their forum in general -- a guest seeking refuge attacking their host as not good enough fans, or young whiners or whatever.

Then, when people come here, they see it isn't just rude behavior when seeking refuge on the official site, but it is how you treat each other and new members here. It's a Mane tradition, it would seem.

Now, I have been under the impression that telling people to go **** themselves (whether in open posts or rep messages) if you disagreed with them, was socially acceptable around here. It would seem so to me.

If on the other hand, it is what the message board has devolved to, but not necessarily what most people want, then if TJ wants to change things, he needs to put some rules in place (I am not aware of any rules other than the family thing) that his mods can use to guide their modding.

I'm sure there are a lot of people that are lurkers, reading posts on a regular basis, but not comfortable jumping in and posting, for fear of getting flamed left and right just for sport, or if they post an opinion not held by all.

Maybe that's what you guys want, maybe not. If you don't, then you need to be clear that you want a little less "wild, wild, west" atmosphere and get some rules in place so the mods know what to clean up.

I think the one place you can't go is becoming thought police. Telling people they can't be critical of Bowlen or Mcdaniels, but it is possible to be critical of the team and its moves, without being rude and obnoxious.

Anyway, just my opinion, which like a holes, we all have.

From another thread started by you;

I can take it, this has been the worst year of my life so you might as well pile it on:

1) Yes, I predicted the Broncos would win at least 10 games this season.
2) I said Orton looked like Brady during the first practice of camp (although, as I've said numerous times, I was referring to mannerisms and not talent - give it to me anyway).
3) I've been ripping Simms every chance I can get.
4) I love nearly every move McDaniels has made and still do.
5) I actually still think we're moving in the right direction.

There you have Maners, focus all of your negative karma towards me. Blast me, rip me, find previous posts that I've been wrong on (god knows there's a lot of them), make fun of me for still being utterly depressed over my breakup, call me gay for swearing off women (no joke, I'm done), make fun of me for being a virgin, I don't care - just let me have it because you'll feel better when your done.

Eventually you can't "Take it"

Get over yourself.

There's nothing wrong with women they are just looking for a man for completion just as men are looking for real women for their completion. be a man you will be amazed how incredible women will become.

Not that's not really true at all; just a blanket generalization.

Thailand does have trafficing issues, but there plenty of legitimate nightlife business there as well.

Thailand has a lot more to offer than just prostitution and is in fact one of me and my wife's favorite places to travel.

Thanks to all for the kind words. A true story before I go on my sabbatical:

Kyle Orton came into my store today to buy a TV. My assistant manager was joking around with him and said "So if you're here, who threw that interception five minutes ago?" Orton went from smiling to serious and immediately walked away. Just a little note to say goodbye on.

Enjoy the season guys.

Life imitating art! I think Montrose needs to play Survivor. Then he will really get a feel for how seedy and dysfunctional this place really is!

I mean seriously I received a PM from a guy who said my turning on him almost killed him. He was on blood thinners and I made him so mad his nose bled all night. Damn near killed him!
Thats good ****, how is this game played?

Wow...someone asking how Survivor is played. That's a pretty tough question to answer in one post...in truth, I still have no idea what I'm doing after two years in the contest. How about reading through the following 805 pages, and then return to us with whatever questions you have remaining?

I don't blame Montrose at all. I'm about where he's at. A lot of happened this year, after this first preseason game, I'm not sure I have the patience or desire to waste my time with the sniveling whining that this site has become. We're going to lose some games, this is a foregone conclusion in the NFL, and I don't know if I even want to see what this place will look like when that happens. I want to talk about football and enjoy my team and I'm not sure this is the best place for me to do that anymore.

Well if people like Kaylore leave then you lose the people who really love the Broncos and know a lot about football.

Jesus christ. You act like critique is only on this site? Check the national media, or go to MHR if you need rationalization.

Or coach, QB are gone, our best WR is cleared and now holding out, we traded out top 10 pick in '10 for a ACC corner that is undersized, and our best back is a 7th rounder.

I've been wathing the broncos since '77, and football since '65.

Agreed on all points, but the fundamental reason for starting this thread was a need for attention.

Or, it was to say goodbye, because he wouldn't be around for a while.

If you visit some family for a holiday, that you don't see often or won't see again for a while, do you say goodbye? If you do, is it about getting attention?

If you are heading away for a while, whether to go to school, or move out of town for a job, maybe a contract job that will take you away for months, do you say goodbye to close friends? Is that seeking attention?

If you have a problem and share it with a friend, is it about attention, or are you seeking support from your friend?

Why the heck do people have to always assume the worst and ridicule someone for posting a message to his 'friends' about something tough he is going through.

What's that old saying? "With friends like these...."

Real-life friendships have been built through interactions here on the Mane... seriously if you can swing it, you should attend at least one "OM Weekend" tailgate. You'd be surprised how much fun it is.

I understand the real life friendship stuff. But if my life is going in the wrong direction, I sure as hell wouldnt pick this site out as part of my problem.

"So can you tell me what the problem is, Vance"

"Well, I consistently cry myself to sleep. And thats usually after lubricating myself up with my own tears and sliding down the hallways in my house just to feel the burning on my stomach...because that actually makes me feel alive. I tend to light candles in the morning and listen to John Mayer for long stretches of time, as I look at pictures of my ex-girlfriend, who just so happened to move in next door with her new boyfriend...he plays professional volleyball and makes my physique resemble that of an elderly Asian woman. Sometimes they make me videotape them cuddling and watching movies, and I have to do it because I'm unemployed and need the money. Recently I was laid off at my job at the zoo where I dressed up like a Panda and handed out coupons to the Rainforest Cafe.

Oh and I stubbed my toe this morning....probably the best part of my week so far.

OH and this site Orangemane.com really stresses me out too. I think that may be the main problem.

We're so quick to offer prayers when someone has a loved one who has passed yet so harsh when one of our own is struggling and still with us.

Really? I guess it just depends on the motto you live by. Life sure isn't always perfect but there is a saying I tend to agree with. "Life is good".

You know the Omane community has long history of rallying together. Whether it's a huge gathering for Elway's Hall of fame induction, a bike for Sam, a trip for Chief fan who is very sick, or a donation drive to keep the Mane alive.

In this case we got a guy who is a bit down on his luck. We've all been there in some capacity or another. The mane is certainly different things to different people. For some were talking a decade or more of online friendships. For others it's 5 years of meeting up with fellow Bronco fans at game. For some it's nothing than an online tool to lob attacks via a computer screen.

To each his own.

Sure, life doesnt suck. But it sure can be difficult at times, especially around his age. The goal is to take those difficulties and turn them into lessons for later on in life.

I've loved seeing some of the rallying this site has done for people. Its amazing. But I just dont understand how somebody could see this as a negative aspect of their life. As soon as I log off, its not like I sit around and take the mean things people say on here into my real life.

Montrose has a real aspiration to perhaps some day work for the Broncos. IMHO, he takes the team more seriously than a lot of other fans who watch the Broncos. Consequently, when he voices his opinions about the team here and really tries to provide some indepth analysis, it's more than just a "message board" to him. It's a place where he can get feed back on his love for the Broncos.

Unfortunately, I think he probably should have left his personal life issues off this board. But, I think for a while he really valued some of the poster's opinions and used this place as an outlet for his feelings.

What's the old saying? "We tend to hurt the ones we care for the most" I certainly hope that is the case with montrose because some of the BS posted on this thread alone is disconcerting.

There is a handful of people here who take this place and their role here WAY too seriously... Montrose isn't the only one.

Imo, that's certainly still the case.

No one's wishing ill towards Montrose or even anything remotely like that. However, the issues do seem to be more self-induced and probably a little over-dramatic.

Being down on your luck isn't quite the same as the terminal illness crazyhorse got hit with.

Regardless, hopefully he takes the time off to address his problems and bounces back better for it on the whole.
