Baker is getting a push on the pocket they started to double team him. Good sign

Vs 2nd and 3rd teamers.

You have to give Orton more of a chance than just one preseason half.

Remember, Simms is playing against the 9ers 2nd and 3rd team... Orton was playing against their 1st team.

Vs 2nd and 3rd teamers.

Still a good sign -- this is what the preseason is for, to see who can play at the NFL level, and who can't.

I'm cautiously optimistic now about Mr. Baker....

well yeah, sprained knee is just another way of saying torn MCL. Usually not ACL though. So, hopefully, knock on wood, he can be set for the last preseason game. no need to rush him back

I'd like to have seen Brandstater here at the end of the game. Simms seems to have much more zip than Orton.

I'll take that pick in the endzone over playing another quarter this early.

its an unwritten rule that they go for two in that situation at the end of the game

The interception on the 2-point conversion is unimportant -- kudos to McDaniels for giving his team some reps in a high-pressure situation.

Overall, I thought this was a well-coached game....

Aside from the Orton performance, I've seen some good things here and there. Our D-line actually looked functional at times, for instance. Also have been pretty happy with the tackling for the most part.

it's hard to grade the defense. the 49ers offense is terrible

True, but even horrible offenses were trashing us last year. So I think this is a step in the right direction.

My thoughts:

1) I am absolutly devasted about Knowshon's injury. I was so looking forward to watching him this season, if he's done I'll be crushed.

2) Pay Brandon Marshall - While this offense can be executed well without a #1 WR, you need a great QB to do so. Because of Orton's limitations we need Marshall to draw double coverage and help allow other players to get open. I know many have referenced my comment from the first day of camp that Orton looked like Brady to me running the offense. Keep in mind that Marshall was practicing (well) that day and it seemed as if Orton was consitently throwing to wide open receivers.

3) I'll eat crow on Simms - yes I've been ripping him because he looks awful in camp and he played well tonight. However he was going up against SF's backups. While Orton looked bad, I'm hoping that the addition of Marshall, more conservative playcalling and better communication might help his cause. Kahn made a point to me on the phone tonight that, based on Orton's two worst performances thus far being the Invesco scrimmage and this game, maybe Kyle's a guy who struggles once the "lights turn on." If that's the case, we might as well go with Brandstater for all I care.

4) I'm optimistic about the front-seven - I thought they looked really good considering their talent level and adjustments thus far in camp. The DL was competent while the LBs (Haggan especially) we're quite active. I'm by no means expecting them to be dominant but I could see them reaching for average would be a major improvement.

5) Finally my stock up/stock down list:

Up: Simms, Hillis, Lloyd, Baker, Haggan
Down: Orton, Jordan, Gorin, Olsen, Bell

My stock up/stock down list:

Down way down: McD-For letting Moreno keep playing after an obvious injury.

We were lucky that Hill only played one series and that Frank Gore didn't play one snap. Also, P Willis didn't play along with a couple of the other starters on D. I will wait until the the regular season to see how the D looks, I am not so encouraged about the O though. The only good I saw tonight is that Moreno and Hillis are the best 2 backs, Eddie and Stokley still get open and the Oline is still pretty good.

Wait... what happened to him looking like Tom Brady?

He looked like Brady the 1st practice when I posted that, you'll notice I never compared the two again. Futhermore, it was a statement (intended) of imagery more than talent. Essentially I was saying that Orton looked (mannerisms, footwork, etc.) like Brady does. Much the way I once said that Torain looks like TD in camp, I was comparing their look and style and not their ability. Because posters took the statement differently (like I was comparing Orton to arguably the best QB of all time in terms of talent) I never made reference to it again. It's my fault for not being clear.

Do we know that Moreno told him he was okay to continue, and just didn't come out of the game?

Why would any coach in his right mind let a rookie in his first PS game make that decision?

Clearly you've never been to Candlestick. Not a blue collar fan in the joint.
Actually I lived in Concord on the Oakland side of the bay from '64 to '69...so yes I have...got an autographed bat from Reggie Jackson, circa 1969 as my only non-Bronco souvenier...San Francisco is my second favorite town. I remember my dad driving me around, taking me to Fisherman's Warf and pointing out Hate Ashbury at the height of the hippie era...very weird place.

Everybody's got blue collar fans.
