The Broncos have reached an agreement on a five-year contract with Knowshon Moreno, according to two NFL sources. The deal ends the rookie tailback's 8-day holdout from training camp.
The No. 12 overall selection and first running back taken in the 2009 draft, Moreno is expected to participate in the team's first training camp workout Sunday afternoon. The team is off Saturday.
Moreno, 22, entered the draft after his sophomore season. He rushed for 2,734 yards on 5.6 yards per carry in his first two college seasons, and added another 645 yards receiving on 53 catches.
It's unclear whether the Broncos will deem Moreno ready to play in their first preseason game Friday at San Francisco, but eventually he is expected to be part of a tailback rotation that also includes veterans Correll Buckhalter and LaMont Jordan.

Not to derail the thread, and i agree with you lamont has looked pretty bad. But from all the TC i have been to. Jordan has been getting extensive work in goaline and jumbo packages. I dont think they would be giving him that much time there if he wasnt going to make the team.--just a thought.

It would also be nice to have a RB that can actually run the ball since that is the main part of a RBs job. I know some people like to think a RB is a Tackle's Assistant.

There is however that soupy air in Georgia he has to run through which requires about twice the effort for the same results.

Moreno signing and getting into camp before the 5 high picks in front of him is huge. He basically gave up the chance for millions, to get into camp with enough time to play in the first pre-season game.

Credit the front office for convincing him and his agent to do the deal. This could have dragged on all the way through pre-season.

Let's not get carried away.

It's not like he really took any discounts here. He's still slated to make $3 mil more than the guy picked right after him and a ton more than Clady signed for at the same selection last year.

If you're a rook, you wait until the guy before you signs.....so that you can get the most. One year isn't relative to the last year, except for the first few players signed.

Moreno signed before FIVE very high picks before him...that means he is taking a chance at taking less to get in earlier.

I'm just saying the guy AND the organization deserve props for getting the deal done. If you think he didn't take a discount to get in early, you're high.

Beantown Bronco
08-11-2009, 12:13 PM
One year isn't relative to the last year, except for the first few players signed.

Not true. If the rookie salary cap pool goes up by 10% from 2008 to 2009 and Moreno is bringing in 15% more than the guy drafted in his slot from last year, then you can bet your @ss that whatever agent negotiated Moreno's deal is going to bring that up in his next recruiting class......as he should.

If you think he didn't take a discount to get in early, you're high.

Early? Earlier than some of the folks in front of him, but not early.

And you're high if you think holding out longer guarantees any of these jokers more money than if they signed yesterday....or the day before, and so on. Think about it. If holding out longer guarantees more money, as you say, than why doesn't every rookie do it? All these agents that signed already should be firing their agents right this second and hire you.

DarkHorse30
08-11-2009, 12:39 PM

comparing this year's number to last year's is only a starting point for the first guys signed. The other signees are going off of that, and not how much the same number got last year. Do you think these rooks are going to take LESS based on what someone got last year?....when the guy in front of him went 20% over what the same number got last year?

And you're high if you think holding out longer guarantees any of these jokers more money than if they signed yesterday....or the day before, and so on. Think about it. If holding out longer guarantees more money, as you say, than why doesn't every rookie do it?

Because they want to get into camp and start learning the systems.

The group of 5 (now 4 since Moreno signed) that are holding out....that is the last #1 picks that have yet to sign. Crabtree is one of the guys that is causing the problem, as has been reported for about a week and a half. I'm not saying that it's better to hold out, I'm saying that since Moreno signed, he gives up the chance to make more - based on whoever signs before him.

So yeah, he took a discount (or as I stated "basically gave up the chance for millions" more than he got). I'm not sure why Moreno and the Broncos don't get more credit for getting him in. To me, it's great and they should get credit for breaking away from the holdouts.

Beantown Bronco
08-11-2009, 12:58 PM
comparing this year's number to last year's is only a starting point for the first guys signed. The other signees are going off of that, and not how much the same number got last year.

You're saying two different things here. Let's be clear. "Comparing" (as you utilize in sentence number one above) is far different from "negotiating" (which is the process you are describing from sentence number two to the end).

I'm not saying that agents negotiate this year's #12 pick in relation to last year's #12 pick. I think you think this is what I'm saying, but it's not.

What I'm saying is this. Everyone in the world compares, not negotiates, from year to year what one pick gets vs. their corresponding number from last year. To illustrate this fact, what was one of the first things folks around here did when Moreno's contract became public? They compared it to Clady's last year. This is what I'm talking about.

Do you think these rooks are going to take LESS based on what someone got last year?

Although this is not my primary argument, this does actually happen. If the guy taken in that slot the prior year was a QB expected to contribute immediately and you are a LB or safety or something like that that may be more of a luxury pick.

........So yeah, he took a discount

This is where I have the problem. You state this as if the discount is a fact. Maybe the guy ahead of him ends up NOT signing a deal that is a big raise over where he was slotted. You for whatever reason are stating it as if this is not a possibility whatsoever.

I'm not sure why Moreno and the Broncos don't get more credit for getting him in. To me, it's great and they should get credit for breaking away from the holdouts.

They've gotten plenty of credit around here. And I myself credit them for getting it done and breaking away from the other group of holdouts. You'll never hear me bag on them for any of that. I just take exception to the belief that Moreno clearly walked away from millions of additional dollars to get it done. I'm guessing there was MAYBE another $500K in guaranteed money to be had. Certainly not millions. Could I be wrong? Sure. But until I'm proven to be, I'm no more "high" than you.

I'm no longer excited about Moreno.

I've recently been told and learned that high first round picks are a complete crap shoot and aren't worth it and it will only ruin our cap room. Burn Knowshon!

Well since he was drafted in the first round we know exactly what should be done with him:

1) he starts all 16 games as a three down back
2) he has to get at least 370 carries
3) he has to perform better than everyone behind him to earn praise as a good pick

Did I miss anything on the Rev/Lex value chart?

Only including my name in something completely absurd

THERE IS NO POSSIBLITY that Knowshon would have signed for LESS than what he signed for, AFTER waiting for the holdouts to sign. He took about 3M more than the guy who signed after him anyway, HOW would it be less than that, if Craptree forces a bigger contract for himself?

Sorry Beantown, your logic escapes me. We are talking about holdouts that are holding out for MORE. You can't convince me that they will take LESS after holding out. The teams have to give up more when there is a holdout, it's the law of supply and demand.

You can argue that it's not right, and that the rookies are getting much more than they should...but that argument is irrelevant to the slotting that happens when rooks sign their contracts. As I've stated: the slot before you dictates your value, not the one after you. By signing earlier than the 4 before him, Knowshon gave up money. Common sense? Apparently not.

Dude.

Say the guy ahead of him is slotted to make $15 mil guaranteed and that is what he is rejecting now. He holds out. Next week, he signs a contract for $15.5 mil guaranteed. Technically, he signed for more money than he was "entitled to" as you proposed, but not nearly enough for one to conclude that Moreno turned down the "millions" in potential money you specified in your first post.

Do you acknowledge that this scenario is a possibility? A simple yes or no would do.

Show me where I said Knowshon would ever sign for less than he did.

Is that Italian? The only thing that announcer and Spanish have in common is they both relate to a Latin language. You are right, it is Italian.

in your scenario....yes......or it could be millions over the length of the contract if the guy signs for 2 million more, instead of .5 like you stated.

The only reason I disagreed with your statement, is that you were diminishing what Knowshon gave up to get in earlier than his compadres. Moreno had the MOST to lose by signing earlier than the rest of them.

I need an update. Is he still signed?
