Sorry for the delay, folks. There's going to be no summary, here. Just straight up verbatim notes from the notebook for each play I noticed:

7 on 7
1. Smith breaks up short route to RB.
2. Stokley..nice route on square out from slot, pass complete.
3. Kyle missed RB wide open in opposite flat, but hit curl route.
4. Orton pass incomplete on deep curl to Royal....pass a bit behind him.
5. Completion to Stokley on post. Decent throw.
6. Simms stares down deep dig route to Lloyd, knocked away by Smith.

OL/DL 1 on 1 (opp. side of field)

1. Reid with nice swim move to get inside 71 (Oldenburg).
2. Clady locked up Doom pretty easily.
3. Peterson with a nice bullrush on Hamilton, but Ben still tied him up.
4. Harris nice job walling Crowder off to the outside.

Punt Returns

1. Alphonso back to return.....shank by Kern.
2. Barrett blocked punt from Colquitt. Kinda slow getting it off.
3. Nice kick by Kern.
4. Smith showing nice moves darting through lanes on PR.
5. Swift fumbled on KR, appeared to be Tony Carter with the strip.
6. Nice acceleration by Alphonso on KR.
7. Noticed good leg by Prater on kickoffs, got it to endzone more often than not.
8. McKinley great return, hugging the sideline the whole way.
9. Kick return coverage (from kicking team) appears consistently weak.

Nickel and Base 11 on 11

1. JMFW nice job with quick recognition on quick screen. Good closing speed to blow play up.
2. Stokley with a dropped pass....slightly overthrown.
3. Nice toss from Kyle to Stokley on a Sail route. Put right where only WR could get it.
4. Kyle...rollout PA, hit Lamont in flat for quick, safe yards.
5. Nice pass from Simms to Lloyd on slant.
6. Jarvis beat Polumbus for a sack. Simms did take about 5 seconds in pocket, however. Very tentative. Not a quick decision maker.
7. Eddie with nice route on curl, good job making it appear to be a vertical to create space and then planting with outside foot and settling down for catch. Moss blew past Polumbus again. Continue to be concerned about Tyler.
8. Strange...QB sneak play in midfield. Maybe it was 3rd and short?
9. Buckhalter with good speed to the corner on a toss....appeared that Goodman may have been blocked in back, however.
10. PA deep pass. Not a good decision by Kyle. Double coverage....Bailey and Bruton....pass broken up...almost INT.
11. Nice job by Tony in creating seperation on intermediate cross play. Got the better of Woodyard.
12. McBath breaks up intermediate pass....not enough velocity from Kyle.
13. Buckhalter....ordinary 4 yd. run.
14. 69 J. Parker got hurt.
15. Royal with a dropped pass. Good throw by Kyle.
16. Short route in flat to Hillis. Unsure of who QB was.
17. Hillis nice job running through middle of D on inside run. Interior OL appeared to get the better of DL, esp right side...decent sized hole.
18. JMFW corner blitz, forced a throw away.
19. Simms with yet another pass deflected at LOS. Not sure what problem is, has good height, so that can't be it.
20. Focused on OL...Clady blocked down on Doom (aligned much more like a normal DL on this play)....Doom got ridden into the ground (actually fell down after the block).
21. Good blitz pick up by Jordan.
22. Nice tight coverage by cornerback DJ Johnson...pass completed nonetheless.
23. Nice burst to the ball by DJ closing in on shallow route to Royal.
24. Good pressure by Reid...pass incomplete.
25. Another corner blitz (tendency?)...this time Smith. Pass deflected.

RED ZONE

1. Good tackle in space by DJ on Lamont Jordan, short gain after a dumpoff.
2. Nice inside run by Buckhalter.
3. Huge interior hole created by OL, not sure who back was.
4. Sack by 99 (Askew). Simms just too hesitant in pocket.
5. JMFW filling backside lane vs. cutback. Good run support for small guy.
6. Orton with nice rollout...finds Stokley for TD.

BACKED UP OFFENSE and BASE OFFENSE

1. PA to Gaffney for 10 yards. Nice pass by Orton.
2. Kyle with deep ball....kind of died in the air on the way down...allowed Goodman to make up seperation and intercept the pass.
3. Nice job by Hill to support on screen. Good diagnosis.
4. Andra with TFL in backfield.
5. PI on Woodyard on Tony.
6. Fields with sack on PA pass...Weigman overpowered.
7. Goodman steps in front of pass.....pick six. Seemed to read Orton's eyes.
8. Harris called for holding on Ayers.
9. Generally noticed more use of pulling guards on runs.
10. BroncoBuff remarks McChesney opens a nice hole.
11. Crowder with pressure.
12. Incomplete pass...Woodyard in area.
13. Nice breakup by Tony Carter on comeback route. Ball took a bit too long getting there.
14. Andra Davis...sack.
15. Orton with nice pass to Gaffney. Seems to be developing good chemistry with Jabar.
16. Askew tipped ball, not sure who QB was.
17. Nice rollout by Orton to Stokley (second time).
18. Larsen with an excellent block on one LB...peels off and then blocks another downfield. (At FB).
19. Pass tipped...did not see much of play.
20. Jabar with a nice catch...had to extend himself for it...not too accurate.
21. Orton incomplete.

FIELD GOALS
1. Prater missed at 42 yards.
2. Prater misses again at 42 yards...very wide. Boos.
3. Prater made it...same distance...mock cheers?
4. 46 yards....Prater makes it.
5. 46 yards...Prater hits it again.

It was pretty fun at the stadium tonight. Montrose and I had ongoing ribbing about Tony Scheffler. We think we saw his wife sitting a few rows in front of us. Everytime we said something about Tony she would cheer. Montrose said that for Tony's sake he hoped she was a nurse. It was also pretty funny seeing JMFW leave the field like a rock star with a huge group of fans cheering for him on his way out. I really really really wanted us to start a "Jack Mother ****ing Williams" chant, as he was leaving, but we thought better of it.

Thanks SoCal. But my first question has to be the obvious one since I wasn't there; was the animosity toward Orton as bad as the AP made it out to be?

Well...they didn't like the two picks....but the most noticeable boo's I heard were for Prater, not Orton. Orton did not show too well tonight, though.

Yeah, Orton didn't have a very good practice. I think the people have gotten used to Cutlers arm that Orton needed to wow people to make em forget. He didn't. But i'm a glass is half full kinda guy, and I saw the defense getting to the QB and making plays on the ball, something we have been lacking the last few years.

Oh and Prater has got to go... He kicked em in the endzone starting last year, then after about week 8 couldn't get them past the 10...

It's weird. Yet, he is the safest guy on the team. In fact, two regimes in back to back years have thought well enough about him to not bring in training camp competition, if I remember correctly.

I don't profess to know why, but it's weird.

I think I was sitting right behind her, and in front of you guys. If not I had some other lady screaming on the top of her lungs every time Tony Scheffler or Peyton Hillis caught the ball.Hilarious!

Overall it was a fun night, It was good getting back into Invesco and watching football! I don't think the fans are going to give McD much leeway this year like Bowlen might. They want results, and want them now. Orton throwing horrible passes that are getting picked off are not going to do it. But Overall it was a good test for everyone to get in the stadium and get some coaching kinks worked out.

And seeing JMFW run out like a rock star was something to behold....

Plus Hillis signed my jersey! did i mention that?

Was the wedge rule in effect as that seems to be the "big" rule change in regards to ST or were the Broncos finding ways around it on kick returns?

Thats kinda how I took it, the defense was getting after it and I can see improvement. But Orton just doesn't have the down field arm to make some of those throws that he was trying. McD is going to have a tough challenge to find the right mix of play calls to get this offense moving in the right direction.

Funny you guys mention this. I walked with her and her friend after the first TC i went too. She is pretty good looking. She has really really white teeth. She was nice. And she was also driving a car with florida plates...??? A mercedez- but florida plates. Havent they lived here for a few years now? Wouldnt they have to have gotten colorado plates?

Anyways she is a crazy driver too. I was following her (all the traffic, but she happened to be in front of me) and twice she randomly changed lanes and then decided to cut right back into the lane infront of me again.

Not even close. As I posted before, at least for the people around me, the whole thing was more or less a joke. I thought the whole place was pretty good natured all the way around... when they started booing Prater (and then giving him a HUGE cheer when he finally made it) sort of summed the whole thing up.

The whole thing was more beer driven than anything else.

exactly, he was booed on his 2 INTs, but cheered when he threw a TD to Stokley, and subsequent 2point conversion. I think like enjolras said, it was more or less a joke... Just shows Broncos fans are maybe a little bit more passionate then a 6...

Was it just me or did they really seem to not be going full speed or hitting hard whatsoever? It really seemed like a walk through for the most part... more so about the coaches communication than actual, full on scrimmaging.

I couldn't hear any pads popping and I wasn't too far away really... I dunno maybe I'm wrong.

Not only that but Orton just looked like he wasn't into it AT ALL on the last 2min drive. He had terrible body language, hands on his hips, just looked like he wanted out of there.

Andre Goodman impressed me. He looked like Champ out there when he broke on those two ints.

its not so much that he 'sucks' its that he is... he is Kyle Orton, no more, no less. He also isn't Cutler on the field with the arm... I still think he will do okay in this offense with these weapons

That's some ugly stuff from Orton.

One thing is for sure...if Orton lays an egg this season and the QB-focused Broncos eat him alive as one would expect, there's no one to blame but McD.

McD may only last a season or two in Denver.

I guess that all depends on what McD has in the wings. Perhaps Brandstater will become the next Tom Brady.

The dislike for McD and the apparent hope that he fails is amazing from Bronco fans.

I mentioned that several times last night ... Prater's distance on kickoffs is very impressive. It's important to note a kickoff is the only play - the ONLY play - that is the same in practice as it is in game conditions. So we should be able to rely on decent field position after KOs (though last year, that kind of good field position resulted only in the opponent's scoring drive lasting one minute longer).

But Prater's kickoffs and Goodman's picks ... that's about all I saw worth positive mention.

Personnel-wise: On a roster loaded with uncertainty, fluid combinations in every unit, the offensive line has been a rock with a thusfar unchanging two-deep depth chart. Until last night. 2nd-year OT Clint Oldenberg has apparently lost his 2nd-team RT spot to Brandon Gorin. The Broncos are Gorin's fifth team in seven years.

I don't think Bowlen will fire McDaniels any sooner then 3-4 yrs. After Bowlen pulled the trade strings so that will offset some of it I think.

I wouldn't worry about it yet thoough

It depends on how ugly it gets if theres a lot of losing. And judging by the practice last night, "going ugly early" may not just be a strategy for picking up at the bars.

Seems like Orton doesn't have the mechanics right to put more velocity on the deeper balls. Seems like he actually tries to put rainbow on it rather than keeping his motion compact and getting some snap on the throw.

From the little bit I've seen of McD coaching him, it looks like McD is trying to adjust his mechanics some. Can anybody comment on that pls?

Orton and Co. look out of sorts in the video. No real surprise just yet. It'll probably be late in pre-season before these guys are starting to feel totally comfortable with the new offense.

Orton described it best himself... saying that the new offense was a brutal system to learn, but once you do... it's a QB's best friend. If he picks it up like McDaniels thinks he will, this offense will be very effective. I'm not worried about his arm. It's just... can he learn to go through his progressions and use this system to his advantage?

I suspect we'll see continued struggles through camp and early PS, but won't be concerned until the season starts. At that point, he should have had enough time to get a basic grasp on the system.

I am not really concerned about the offense, but I am happy to see the defense getting to them. At least they can dominate a bad offense, if they had gotten outplayed now we have no chance.

As the camp guys point out, the D is almost always working over the O at this point in camp, every year. Add a new offensive system, and there's no doubt going to be struggles.

Agree, though... some of this very well should be an improved defense, and in particular, an improved secondary. We've added a ton of talent on D, and I can't wait to see how this plays out on the field.
