My Impressions of Camp

Gone are the days of Club Med! Practice takes on a feel of high school two-a-days. Drills followed by stretching followed by drills followed by scrimmage followed by suicides followed by drills. Lots of followed byís but you get the point. This is a different regime and whole different practice.
The new format is going to take some getting used to so this report may not be my best this year but bare with me. I will tell you that if you are considering going to camp I highly encourage you to attend. Its crisp and the fans really get the best view in the house when it comes to the 11 vs 11 and 7 vs 7 scrimmages.

As mentioned the start of practice is very musical. This evenings playlist included Rockin the Casbah, The Boss, Tom Petty, Michael Jackson, Ice Cube, and Pearl Jam. A very eclectic choice, I happened to be standing right next to the speakers when it started and my ear drums are still ringing they play it so loud.

The Good Stuff

Eddie Royal is a gamer, like we didnít know that, but he runs routes like an all pro. His speed is just amazing. He made Alphonso Smith look like a pretzel in drills today. He was running what looked to be a go route and cut the route short. He stopped on a dime and cut back to receive a perfect pass. Smith well he was still running with what he thought was Royal! Yes it was a rookie but Royal is really polished WR.

Stokely runs the best routes by far. He makes a living on that and gets the DBís turned every which way.

Speaking of Alphonso Smith, his practice this evening was not as good as the morning. Thatís expected of course but I definitely see what others have seen in terms of talent. He is fast, to the ball, and athletic. He missed out on at least 2 INTís that I saw.

Dumervil during drills exploded out of his stance and used those arms to jam Reid and put him on skates.

McDaniels runs a camp unlike we have seen in Denver for a long while. The team splits up into pods where they get individual coaching by position. The LBís work together, the CBís work together, etc. They really focus on the basics and the finer details.

On offense I watched the QBís do a 3 step drop and before they threw the other QBís started slapping the throwing arm basically something to get them used to pressure and game situations.
Orton definitely does not have the arm of our departed Cutler. But he does have decent accuracy and can make good throws.

Hillis looks as good as last year before he suffered the injury. He has a speed you just donít expect out of him and they used him in all sorts of formations. Including splitting him out wide for a WR screen.

Tony Scheffler didnít get hurt and stay tuned for moreÖÖ

Orton really struggles throwing across his body, thats where his worst throws came when I was able to fully watch. He throws a nice out pass though and made some very nice throws.

I watched a lot of the D-Line drills. They are really working with the players to avoid getting jammed and engaged by the oline. They were working on footwork and recognition a lot this afternoon. The coach kept stressing awareness and recognizing when the OL was bailing inside so they can swing wide and seal the outside.

65 Rulon Davis couldn't make it to the port-o-potty or locker room so he took a pee on the side of the Dove Valley building. It was pretty funny to see and I almost snapped a picture.

Again camp has really changed and its going to take some getting used to. Its hard to focus on formations and routes as where the media is allowed to stand you can't get a good vantage point.

The media is really at odds with this and were mumbling under their breath when the coaches didn't give any interviews.

Champ and the others came out after practice and ran sprints. They were timing them so I assume they were putting them through the conditioning test again. We will see if any of them come off the PUP list tomorrow.

Pictures coming next.

Eddie Royal had a superb practice this evening.

I was yelling at Chris Simms from the sidelines. Everyone got a pretty good laugh when I teased him about his Longhorns tat and told him to cover that thing up... playing along and being a good sport he laughed and pulled his sock up and over the tattoo. In this morning interviews we joked about it and he said that Colorado wasn't the best place to sport a UT tat... lol

Kenny McKinnley... yeah, he's a baller. That kid can play. In fact, besides Alphonso Smith, he is the most exciting rookie out there. Hopefully that will change soon with Ayers and Moreno. This draft class is shaping up to be very good.

Kyle Orton is developing his timing with a bunch of receivers. He hooked up with Brandon Lloyd on intermediate routes on a number of occasions. 15 yard outs were on the button and he did it with Royal, Gaffney, and Lloyd.

Orton hooked up with Eddie Royal on a smoke screen. The blocking was perfect and Eddie shot behind a block and hit the sideline....> GONE for 6. He looks explosive and even faster than he did last year.

On a similar play to the other side Alphonso Smith read the play perfectly and jumped the route. He got two hands on the ball but couldn't make the play. Eddie Royal ended up catching the tipped ball and turning it up field for a short gain. Great read by Alphonso Smith and a play that he will make more often than not. I was watching on the far field when Eddie Royal undressed him with the deep comeback type route. Royal can do it to anyone so I'm not too worried about Smith, but on that particular play Royal created 5+ yards of space. He is an incredible player.

Brandon Marshall didn't practice this afternoon/evening.

We worked a lot on punt returns and setting up the return. Smith, McKinnley, and Royal were the return men, along with some scrub who won't make the team (#12).

I had a couple kiddos with me and sitting with all of the fans I have to admit... Coach McDaniels style of camp is more fun than Coach Shanahan's. After practice the field security foot soldiers move all of the remaining fans to the north side of the 40 yard line. They set up a new boundary and then the players come let by..... JOSH MCDANIELS! This afternoon they were followed by the OL... ALL OF 'EM! The kids were able to get autographs and pictures with Ryan Clady, Seth Olsen, and Casey Weigman. I talked with Casey for a bit and told him that it was good to see somebody go about getting a new contract the right way. His response, "Meh, what was I gonna do?... sit around at home on the sofa?" Good dude and a great attitude.

So, for those of you that are thinking about going out to camp... Do it. It is a fun atmosphere and the crowd has been electric. The warmups are completely different from the past lasting well beyond 15 minutes this afternoon/evening. The dynamic exercises including a 7 man offense (no OL) with the QB handing off to the RB and the entire 7 man offense sprinting 40 yards downfield. Another twist that left me wondering if Tuten and Greek had anything to do with it or if it is all McD. I know Shanny controlled everything in the past but maybe McD is giving the staff some liberty to do what they feel is best???

Josh Barrett needs to be unleashed. He was in position to make several punishing hits and let up each time. While the guys were in full pads this evening, they were not hitting each other during any of the 11 on 11 work... well, not intentionally anyway but a few guys got jacked up every now and then.

The media truly is at a disadvantage when it comes to the 11 on 11 and 7 on 7 work. The players block their view so it's hard to even see who is making the play and what players are in on what unit. We may have figure out a way to wonder over to the far sideline with all of the fans to see the team vs team drills.

See the board in the back. They time each session. In the past Shanny would end practice super early. Not McDaniels they went 13 sessions and over the 7:30 mark.

Like I said gone are the Club Med days of shanny camp. This is completely different.

I would be surprised if Jarvis makes it past first cut. He is just 3 levels below everyone and our DLine isn't even that good. He came out and prayed on the field before camp. I wanted to snap a picture and say Jarvis praying for his roster spot but thought better.

Oh I can guarantee it. Guess what they did this year. Media has to turn off the cameras and photos for the 11 vs 11 and 7 vs 7. Oskie thought it was because of another blog but I checked. Its the official policy now.

The field hasn't been repositioned and the fans can clearly see the formations. I can tell you exactly what the fronts look like, the OL's splits for each play, the depth of the LBs and safeties, etc. etc.... Not much you can cover up unless you close off practice... which ain't gonna happen in TC.

Apa, when we were walking in the changed the policy again this evening regarding cameras. They were limiting people to cameras "no larger than a cell phone". The security folks said, "we realize this is a new policy that isn't on the website but it just changed today." Couple that with what I saw this morning. Khan was there as well when they came over and shut everyone with cameras down. It was well into practice, not the beginning.

Right on, you should have said hello. I was sitting with Champ24 as well. You were probably laughing when I kept yelling, "Jeff... JEFF.... JEFF"

I thought someone was calling me, but I was meeting up with Broncodoug at that point and didn't even see you guys.

and I hope my kids drove him nuts, though they weren't crying

Just kidding, your kids were very well behaved actually.

I keep forgetting the funny part. About halfway through camp a car alarm kept sounding. I was waiting for the loud speaker to announce, "Will the owner of a pewter Cadillac please come to the front desk." Security finally found out whose it was. Turns out it was the kicker, Matt Praters.

Here's more info on the sprints:
Old-school ending to practice

by Lindsay Jones on July 31, 2009 1 Comment

So maybe Josh McDaniels thought four hours of practice, in full pads, wasn’t hard enough for his team.

After the conclusion of Friday’s second practice, shortly before sunset, coaches split players into three groups for a series of sprints: wide receivers, running backs and defensive backs / tight ends, quarterbacks and linebackers; and lastly, offensive and defensive linemen. They ran the width of the field and back. The team ended several minicamp practices the same way; just like in the spring, the only player to win every single one of his heats is rookie defensive end Rulon Davis, the former Marine. QB Chris Simms also won his heat a couple of times, as did cornerback Joshua Bell.
Speaking of old school, the music selection for the evening skewed to the 80s and early 90s, with some old Michael Jackson (Beat It), Ice Cube (Check Yo Self — the “censored” version) and Pearl Jam (Even Flow).

Seriously I fully expected a player to blow chunks. They ran 4 of them each. Then out came Thomas, Bailey, and Hill to run sprints. I am not sure whats going on with these 3 but I hope they passed the test this afternoon. I know they were timing their sprints.

Did you know the players don't get to go home anymore? Nope they all pile on a bus and go to a hotel.

Camp is real again fellas and ladies. I foresee great things for this team, it might not be this year but it will come!

I like to hear that they can no longer go home during training camp....that is how it should be.

Doom got destroyed in one on one drills against Clady.

Dude Clady destroyed everyone its why I didn't single that out. We have a bookend LT for the next 10 years. Thank shanny for that and for Royal. He made some great picks!

There was a guy about 15 feet away from me that was just tearing Orton up during those sprints. He was dragging and that dude let him know. "You're friggin last every time Orton", as he got about 10 feet away from him on the sideline closest to us. The next time down, "Why are you not leading?" Then finally, after some other comments, "You're getting beat by the friggin kicker... all of the kickers!" I was cracking up.

Orton looked good in practice, but he didn't seem to be too high on leading the pack in gassers after practice, lol.

I want to thank you guys for providing these awesome camp reports. We are reading some very encouraging things.

One of my complaints of the old regime had been that the camps had gotten soft.

I am particularly pleased to read about the "toughness" that is being demanded.
I also like to hear about the extended stretching. Something had to change there.
Last, the music, while it may seem small, is excellent. This shows me that McD is in touch with this generation of players and understands that there are tools to help motivate.

Good stuff guys!

DUDES!

Thanks so much everybody for the camp reports, it's truly awesome to read about the workings of our team from such a close perspective.

With each tidbit you guys push out, i get more and more pumped for the coming years. It sounds like we have somebody here that is ready to put us back on TOP!!!

Keep the reports coming guys, they're absolutely awesome!

and ps, I got off work about eight thirty and headed over to dove valley for training camp this morning.

Got there, and was like...Holy ****! My first training camp and I'm gonna get great parking, find a great seat...there was like two cars there. Then the attendant tells me: tc doesn't start till 2.

ahahaha oops.

So anywho, I'll be headin back this afternoon. I really don't know what anyone looks like, so if you guys see a guy with camo shorts and a champ jersey, just yell out hey cory ;D

Ok I am off to bed. But in closing I wanted to say things are very different at Dove Valley this year. The practice is a real football practice. The Media is pissed off! Did you know the players don't get to go home anymore? Nope they all pile on a bus and go to a hotel.

Camp is real again fellas and ladies. I foresee great things for this team, it might not be this year but it will come!

This is something very different from the player's standpoint...Let me think- do I want to go home to my new bride or hang out in a hotel room? Although the vets don't have to share rooms.

His wife stayed up here with the dogs because he won't be home anyways.

BTW..is anyone going to the Seattle game? I will be in Seattle until the 26th because I'm going to my nephew's wedding in Spokane on the 28th

By the way , APA, KHAN, SOCAL, OSKIE and anyone else . Thanks to all of you...it's killing me to miss TC this year and I get a lot of info from you guys. Chris usually isn't in the "sharing mood" in the evening after practice so it's like pulling teeth to get information

Yep and b/c Chris is basically a lock on a dominant OL we aren't focusing on him too much. I'll try to throw a look his way next time I'm at camp... what I can tell you for sure is the Broncos have had some room to run inside. Don't know if that is b/c the OL is bad to the bone or if the DL is just bad?

As much as I'd love to know what your son is thinking, I tend to believe that sharing any kind of "inside" info. on this board will be counter productive for the team. Also, it will cause chaos here because many posters just can't handle the information.

That being said, it's very cool that you are here! :notworthy

I agree with this. If you share "good info" it pi$$es off the haters. If you share "bad info", it energizes the haters. The reason is that the haters tend to be pessimistic and would tear down the team if the Bronco won the SB. The rest of us would absorb the info and look for the results after the play or after the game.....

Some of us are greatful that we have a team..... !Booya! But it is neat you're here.
