The Broncos rookies will pull their jerseys over their heads Friday and stroll out to an evening workout and find a very different place waiting for them than the previous three days.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (Thursday Cancelled) it was largely about learning, about getting lined up and working on the basics. It was about personal attention with almost as many coaches as players on the field.

Friday, things change.

The veterans arrive and reality takes a bite out of things. Then the task becomes getting from 80 players to 53 over the next month. The task becomes winning games and keeping those who will make the fewest mistakes and have the most potential to make things happen.

“We all pretty much know it will be different,” said center Blake Schlueter, the Broncos’ seventh-round pick this past April. “We know they’re going to get most of the reps and we have to pay attention and wait for our chances. But that’s all part of it too.”

Look for the pads to go on plenty as well. Josh McDaniels will work the players in full gear far more than Mike Shanahan did in recent years.

Shanahan always said it was concern over injury that fueled his decision, while McDaniels said he’s looking to build a more physical team and that “you just can’t think it’s going to be there in September if you haven’t practiced that way.”

As I have said many times this offseason...Club Med is F$*king over! Time to find some real football players and not just flag/two hand touch players.

I like that we'll be practicing in pads and full contact. For too long we've been a soft team and have been considered a finesse teams instead of a physical one.

I really like the idea of being more physical, but I suspect if players start dropping, McDaniels will just revert to the Shanahan days.

Plenty of teams practice in pads more than we ever did and got by just fine.

Man, the updates and pic's are going to be epic. I can't freakn wait. The way we see these players practice the next few weeks will really get us ready for what kinda season were gonna have.

If Shanahan's 'club med', as it has been labeled, led to less injuries over the past several years, then practicing in full pads would have led to carnage of ridiculous proportions.

so do the steelers and ravens or any good defense over the years practice in full pads more than the broncos ever did?

Rabb

this is what the team needed, with proper strength and conditioning we will be fine

honestly players are going to get injured one way or another...worrying about that in lieu of soft practices is just silly

and I asked my Ravens pal and he said Billick ran camps about like Shanny, vets can sleep at home, light on the pads, etc.

Harbaugh runs it like McDaniels is about to, get your ass to camp and get your pads on

Although you hope no one gets hurt, one reason this is good is that it puts an emphasis on finishing plays more than winning points by flying to the ball (eg Nate Webster). I have a feeling our lineup would have been different last year if we had put on the pads more.

So we are gonna have lots of injuries early in the season this year...good to know.Or maybe less through out the season, because the players bodies will be more prepared for game time contact. Maybe shanny lost a lot of players in season due to lack of contact in practice?!!:strong:

I'm gonna try to get out there and be on the sidelines with some of the neighborhood rugrats. If I see you walk by I'll holler at you... or hit you with a pinecone or something ;D You'll see me either way! :sunshine:

Theres no "right" way. Both schools of thought have merit. I kind of think though that when you have on defense is all gemischt, a more physical approach might be better so you can better see what you have to work with. Finishing plays makes all the difference.

It doesn't seem to hurt other "physical type" teams to practice in full pads all the time. Shouldn't be a problem with us. Shanahan's penchant for not practicing in pads/easy practices sure hasn't helped our rate of injuries the last three or four years IMO.

They are supposed to be big boys. They can handled it. If they can't, they probably should be in this sport. Bill Parcell used to fine players for missing practice with injuries like tweeks of hamstrings and the like. Need that type of mentality here to toughen these guys up!

Its probably the other way around, the club med softies get injured more often when the going suddenly gets rough.

I just want them to ****ing stretch properly for once. I am so ****ing sick and tired of seeing guys pull up lame with a dinged hamstring. It seems like it's the official team injury or some ****.

I'm all for physical practices. Hands off the quarterback, and no shots on receivers accross the middle, but they need get used to hitting. Remember a few years ago when Dallas - a team that subscribes to full contact TC - came to Dove Valley a couple years ago and beat us down like we were their little brother? Our guys were like veal out there.

The one thing that's always amazed me about Scooter is the ability to make songs with the most stupid lyrics that still get a crowd going.

Will McDaniels be able to sell the fish to the players though?... and at what cost?!

Yeah, scooters lyrics are lacking, but then you also have classics like this:
