Two NFL sources said the Baltimore Ravens may revisit the idea of trading for unhappy Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall(notes) if veteran Derrick Mason(notes) doesn’t return from his sudden retirement.

This comes after the Ravens were unsuccessful in getting veteran Drew Bennett(notes) to return. Bennett passed a physical last week, but then complained about an old knee injury before deciding to not play.

Bennett’s decision and Mason’s retirement earlier this month have left the Ravens in a lurch at wide receiver. The Ravens think Mason’s retirement was partly a ploy to help get more money from the team. (Mason had asked to renegotiate his deal earlier in the offseason.)

“The Ravens need a real receiver; they always have,” one league source said. “They got by last season with Mason and [Mark] Clayton because the running game was good and the defense was awesome. It was the usual formula. But they have to get somebody in there or the window is going to close on the [Ray] Lewis Era.

“Plus, they have to help out [second-year quarterback Joe] Flacco.”

The Ravens have declined to comment. However, team history would indicate they aren’t likely to make the deal. General manager Ozzie Newsome doesn’t like to give up high draft picks, could be concerned about Marshall’s history of off-field problems and likely wouldn’t want to pay the large contract Marshall is seeking.

Marshall is one of several unhappy wide receivers. In addition, Cincinnati’s Chad Ochocinco(notes) and Cleveland’s Braylon Edwards(notes) are reportedly hoping to be traded. However, the Bengals have steadfastly refused to deal Ochocinco and the Browns are unlikely to trade Edwards to a division rival.

That leaves Marshall, who asked for a trade earlier this offseason, as the most likely candidate if the Ravens are able to make a move. The Broncos have been coy about dealing Marshall, indicating to several media outlets that they aren’t shopping Marshall but will listen to offers for him.

I wonder what they would be willing to give up. I wonder if we could get Clayton adn Ngata.

I'd honestly do Marshall for Ngata straight up.

me also but there is no way in hell they do it

Ngata is Ray Ray's boy, and really helped rejuvenate his career

that happens and Ray Ray is putting Ozzie through the window

Ngata in this defense would be amazing

So again, another article that's pure speculation and doesn't have one piece of information from a Raven employee about their interest in MArshall.

I dont see why they'd trade the centerpiece of their D-line for a troublesome receiver with an injury issue

Ravens just don't have the ammo.

Ngata isn't going to be on the table, try to be realistic.

I do love that the Ravens don't like to give up high picks, don't want to give in to his contract demands, and are concerned about his off-field issues, buuuuuut they might be interested in Marshall. That stuff doesn't add up.

How about Trevor Pryce!!!!

No joke. Or Shannon Sharpe...

Seriously though, I loved Pryce when he was here and he didn't do bad last season (according to his stats, but then again I didn't watch him play).

edit:

But all evidence to the contrary.....!

In other words, he wants to steal him

Marshall has to stick it out, prove his his hip is healed and stay out of trouble, and finally not lead the league in drops.

His options are incredibly better in '10 if he even catched 75 passes and 7 TD/s.

Unless the economy retanks and there is a lockout. Best to offer a 1st tender and trade from there.

Denver isn't sniffing the playoffs IMO.

We can recoup the pick for Smith.

Marshall should stay in Denver, no way the Ravens have what Bowlen and McD wants to get

Who would be even want from them? or would they even give up what we want.

Unless Bowlen doesn't want to pay the big bucks to Marshall...

Just sayin.

Whats wrong with a 1st and 3rd round?

Whats wrong with a 1st and 3rd round?

Which would likely equal a high 2 and a 4th Ravens can do it easily but, with court date I can't see anyone offering much before they see the outcome.

Nothing, but they won't do that.
