On Monday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a move many had been expecting, releasing quarterback Brian Griese.

The Bucs released Griese to make room for rookie defensive tackle Roy Miller on their offseason roster. Miller signed his rookie deal on Monday.

Griese, 34, had two stints with Tampa Bay (2004-05, '08), and helped the Bucs win the 2005 NFC South division title.

The 6-foot-3, 214-pound Griese originally entered the NFL as a third-round pick with the Denver Broncos in 1998. He spent five seasons in Denver before joining Miami in 2003.

In his time away from Tampa Bay, Griese spent two seasons with the Chicago Bears (2006-07) before being traded back to the Buccaneers during the 2008 offseason.

Last year, Griese played in five games for the Bucs, completing 59.8 percent of his passes for 1,073 yards and tossing five touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Griese has completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 19,440 yards and thrown 119 touchdowns and 99 interceptions in 83 career starts.

Despite being the most experienced quarterback on Tampa Bay's roster, Griese did not appear to be in Tampa Bay's future plans at quarterback, where the Bucs will have four signal callers - Luke McCown, Byron Leftwich, Josh Freeman and Josh Johnson - compete in training camp.

Griese was, however, invited to Tampa Bay's mandatory mini-camp in June, but skipped those workouts as well as all voluntary practices during the offseason. It is believed Griese, who stayed in Denver to be with his pregnant wife for most of the offseason, was fined for missing Tampa Bay's mandatory mini-camp

You took artistic license with the title.

My favorite real newpaper title of all time was
"Houston kicks the Bum out!" when Wade's Daddy was fired.

Griese attempted 67 passes in a game last year, I'm sure he could flip SOME burgers, not a full shift, but some! ;)

GRIESE IS AWESOME!

Just keep him away from dogs and starting.

I think Griese could make a good quarterback coach someday. He did a good job mentoring Orton and Grossman, all things considered.

Seriously--I'd love to see him back in Denver--he played in front of Orton once and probably could beat him out again...........and if I recall, Orton and Griese have a strong friendship form their Chicago days too.......

I'll never forget the mic'd up video from the second SB: In the background on the sidelines bench were Elway, Shanahan, Kubiak and Brister, huddled around some photos from upstairs, discussing strategy.

In the foreground is a bored Griese standing alone, not interested, not listening .... that's how I'll remember him.

I had some great seats during the Griese era and that is what he did. Good QB coach taco? That's funny.

Griese never had the respect of his team. No way in hell he could earn the respect as a coach.

He should sign a 1 day contract and retire as a Bronco!

Seems like a great guy who just should have done something else with his life besides football.

The $25-30 million in his bank account by the age of 34 disagrees.
