Playstation 2 ?

I'll probably get laughed off the Mane by the gamers here but hear me out before blasting.

I have two young boys, 7 and 5. We don't own a video game system. My wife is opposed to them but I'm slowly wearing her down as I want to get one for the boys. I'm not big on video games. Never have been, probably never will be. So this is mostly for the kids.

I don't want to spend a lot of money. I'm mostly going to buy kids games at this point, obviously. So I decided that instead of going PS3, XBox 360, or Wii, I'd go PS2. I know it's outdated, I know they don't make many games for it anymore and will probably stop altogether by next year, etc. But for $100 I can get the boys a game system they'll love for a couple of years as they don't know any better that it's outdated. And the games are generally less expensive. When they're a little older, a couple of years down the road, we can updgrade to whatever system is "the one to get" at that time.

Does this make sense at all? Completely stupid? Should I spend more than double the money to get a Wii or XBox 360? Am I missing anything here that I should consider?

For your kids ages, truthfully the Wii makes the most sense. Plus if your wife is against video games the wii can incorporate some more "activity" into gaming as it comes with the Wii sports games (tennis, golf, bowling, baseball, etc...) that force the player to actually use phyical motion to play the game. The Wii's current success right now is due in part to its family appeal with many games that are acceptable to the whole family.

Financially though the PS2 is the cheapest with the cheapest games and they have an incredibly huge library (I believe the PS2 game library might be the biggest of all systems, but not sure). I see that as just a 'test' system it might be the way you want to go so as not to be out $200 on a 360 or Wii.

If money is your primary concern, just grab a used PS-3 or Wii through craigslist or some local rag.

for boys age 5 & 7 PS2 will be just fine.

Also buy some games on ebay or even the discount racks at walmart.

They wont really know the difference between PS2 & 3

seriously dude, i STILL play my ps2 (i've got a ps3 now, but with no backwards compatibility), and will continue playing it for years to come.

Your kids will love it, and it's incredibly cheap. Just go to GameStop (or gameforce, or wherever your local game shop is) and you can get a refurbished one with a couple controllers for $50 I think. Maybe seventy. ANYWHO, they have literally HUNDREDS of used games at those stores, and you can usually pick them up out of the bargain bin for five bucks a piece.

They still make a lot of titles for the PS2, as it is STILL one of sony's top sellers.

A hundred bucks will set you guys up for months to come.

You probably still think being homosexual is a choice too. It's the 21st century you bigot. I've played games with professional football players, pretty sure they get laid. If you're a terrible parent and don't moderate your kid he MIGHT take a year or two more to get laid than the average.

Video games are part of the culture now, they don't carry the same stigma as they used to.

I still have a PS2. I just simply don't play enough to warrant dropping the coin for an upgrade. For the most part, any game made for PS3 is made in PS2 format. And it's cheaper.

My PS2 is amazing, game quality has been maxed out but you kids might not know that. Quality games are scarce but it still is a great system. All major sport games are still being made for it so I am happy for now.
