Thought Davies had that bike early; that would have been sweet. But atleast Jozy came through, now lets see if we can hold off what is going to be a monster attack in the 2nd half.:notworthy

yea, a lot of things went our way that half....that bike kick would have been amazing...

i was really surprised at how on the attack USA came out...I'm pretty sure Spain was too...its gonna be hard to hold them scoreless...need another goal

They should outlaw that stupid buzzing sound in the background.

How long is a game - 90 minutes?

Also, what do they do if it ends in a tie?

90 minutes, and I think they take whoever has the most goals throughout the tourney and advance them.

Bigger upset than 1980 for sure. These guys had absolutely no business even being on the same field with Spain, much less beating them. At least Team USA in 1980 deserved to be in that game.

basically, its JUST the confederation cup....so the stakes are a little bit lower

however, its like a very small school like Chaminade playing UNC in the Pre-Season NIT and winning to move on

at least thats the best way i can put it

thats not fair. spain had their best players and they played their hearts out. spain was only missing iniesta. they left everything on the pitch and so did the USA. hats off to howard, demeritt and onyewu to keep a clean sheet.

The Confederation Cup is played every four years before the World Cup, it is an important tourney so don't downplay thus win. It is the top seeds from many of the World Cup brackets.

This is one of the biggest wins in US soccer history. Spain has not been beaten in 35 matches, 3 years I believe, and we have been looking very poor until the Egypt match. This was an amazing win and hopefully it can give us the confidence to carry it over into next year.

That red card was pure bs and should not even have been a yellow, he got all ball. It really is pathetic how bad these refs have it out for the US. Something needs to be done, it's like the NBA when all the good players don't get called but the lesser teams do. It' pathetic.

The first goal was all Altidore. He held off his man, made a very nice play on the ball and finished strong. The second goal was all hard work by Donovan and persistence by Dempsey.

Excellent win! I was so excited watching this.

its tough to explain to someone who doesnt follow soccer though

the US has had such a difficult time grooming players and gaining notoriety on a nationaly level, let alone a global level, that the "program" has been almost a laughingstock...then the qualifiers came and we didnt look good, then we got blitzed by Brazil and Italy....so people were just thinking it was another symbol of disappointment for the sport as a whole in the country

then this happens...it was a fluke....but hopefully this can revitalize some of the fans of the sport....

Howard is a magician back there and I love this kid Altidore...

Donovan should have shot that second goal himself, but great scrappy work by Dempsey!

He may be off at times during the game but he has come up big the last 2 games.

Casey is terrible, a tired Altidore or Davies is much better than him rested

Oh yeah, BRING ON BRAZIL!!

Italy did not dominate us, we actually looked better in the first half. When you go man down to a team of that caliber you're going to pay.

Well, i agree in the sense that team USA hockey deserved to be there because tie breakers didnt get them to face Russia, but the Soviets were a better team by the millions. Some of the best players in the world, the best goaltender in the world, playing together for years, and they got beat by a bunch of college kids who had only been playing together for a short while. Completely improbable

Wrong.

This tourney was used by these teams to test where they were in relation to teams they normally do not play. This is a pre-world cup select tourney. Its big. Every team that comes brings their A team and tries to win the thing.

The US team is missing players as well, so dont start about Iniesta missing from this match. The US team doesnt have anywhere near the talent that that Spanish team has on its B team.

GREAT win. Probably one of the biggest upsets in US sports history, if not THE BIGGEST upset.

Didn't the Soviets scrimmage the NHL All-Stars that year and obliterate them like 12-0?

EDIT: Upon research, in 1979, the Soviets blanked the NHL All-Stars 6-0.

Just wondering why you say this about beasley. I'm a rangers fan and he is a frustrating player who shows glimpses of brilliance then does nothing for the rest of the game. He always seems to play well for the US tho. The big shame is that Mo Edu got injured he had been amazing for us towards the end of the season.

Beasely has been useless for the US team in the last 5 matches I've seen. He's done absolutley nothing. I think his days of glory are behind him. I know he was good for us in the past, but he must have lost a few steps or something. They've tried playing him on defense the last few matches and he plays horribly, often giving up dangerous possessions to the other team.

couldn't have said it better myself. don't get me wrong, i like DeMarcus and have always appreciated what he has done for club and country, but his best days seem to have passed him by and Bradley holding onto him in favor of players with more energy, passion and, apparently, attention to detail has been frustrating as hell.

Would LOVE to see more of Maurice Edu, Torres and Adu, as well. But I fully recognize that there are only enough spots on the field.

Between Edu, Jermaine Jones, and Micheal Bradley, the US have a trio of very good defensive mids. Its hard to see what Bradley will do when Jones and Edu join the team, but there are three solid options there.

well, we dont have the option of Bradley for the final so it will give us a chance to see some of these other kids.

I echo the same sentiments about Beasley...for a while I was thinking he was injured, but apparently its just a decline in skill

Torres will help with maintaining posession, but he wont get on the field at the expense of Feilhaber. Feilhaber is pretty good. He's very quick, good on the ball, and has probably the best vision of any one on the squad...not to mention that he can score from all over the front third.

Feilhaber has been committed to chasing and defending in this tourney, and if he continues to do that, it will be hard to keep him out of the starting lineup.

I think its bigger than that....because its a team with a tradition of losing on a national elite level, maybe, finally, taking a step in the right direction

After the first goal, Spain unleashed everything that they had until the 90 minute whistle. The US absorbed it and executed their game plan very well.

I'm sure that they would have liked to maintain posession more when they turned the ball over from Spain, but they were able to send 4 guys forward and get another goal in counter attack. Spain were not able to manage to get a final touch on the ball despite the US team saying essentially that Spain could hold the ball...they just couldnt shoot it on frame.

it doesnt hurt that Howard played like two guys in goal....he's unreal...I was actualy talking to my friend from England after the loss to Italy and I was telling him that it was a shame the US team never blossomed under the current talent of Howard and Donovan....Howard is a guy that is world class and it was always a shame to see him take on uncontested shots in the World Cup and give up 3 goals a game and whatnot

Yeah...I love Howard as a keeper. He's my fave on the squad (Im a former keeper, though so I'm biased ;D ). He really has characterized everything we love about Americans with his play, leadership, and attitude this season with Everton. Its that same kind of display that the US team showed against Spain yesterday, and it is that kind of display that will get US players a second look from European teams from here forward.

Howard's been amazing, I agree with you guys. I thought Guzman had an impressive effort against Egypt as well--definitely had some missteps (like coming way too forward on crosses and then FAILING to clear), but he also had some really quick-twitch saves. They said he was just 24...excited about developing him as well.

We were robbed of a seed the last time around, but the win over Spain and a finals appearance in this tourney should get us a seed. The US have been in too many "groups of death" simply by their inclusion. Two seeds + USA + random non seeded team = group of death every time. Look at this tourney for example.

it was my understanding that they use the last two World Cups as tools to determine seeds as well....which means we finally get rid of hte '98 Cup in France which we finished 32nd...right?

It's about time the US finally won a huge game. They usually fold against the elite European teams. This may be the momentum the US squad needs to finally become a force in international soccer.
