He disappears for five days without telling anybody. Then, he says he was hiking the Appalachian Trail. Now, he says he was in Argentina. WTF?

No contingency plan? You mean like something in statute that would say that the Lt. Governor is in charge if the Governor can't be reached? If you want to completely ignore the delegated order of succession, then yes, you are right that he left no contingency plan in place.

That's like saying you have no idea who would be in charge if something were to happen to the President.

Yep.Sure, but this comes after he was caught in all sorts of lies and deceptions; it's great he owned up to it, but his family knew about the affair for months and he was considered a candidate for 2012. I mean this is like John Edwards' affair, thinking he can somehow cover it up and pursue higher office. The arrogance.

That said, I appreciate his frankness, but I can't forgive the deception or the arrogance to not resign from the Gov. assoc. even though this was going on for quite a while. Perhaps, he had always intended to reveal this, but that seems fishy, with all his grandstanding over not taking stimulus money.

The South Carolina constitution has foggy guide lines about these situations. Clearly, Sanford should have notified his staff and the Lt. Gov. of his whereabouts. He didn't. Hell, he didn't even tell his wife. Just imagine if you decided to "get away" for a few days and failed to notify your employer or family.

It certainly is the business of constituents (of which I am one) to know who is running the state. He did not tell anyone--including his wife, staff, and Lt. Gov.--where he was going. You can't just leave a job--any job--without telling people how to get in touch with you if there is an emergency. What if there had been a prison break? A destructive tornado (it is tornado season in the state)? It's fine if he wanted a break, but he clearly should have notified at the very least his staff and Lt. He should resign, plain and simple.

His political career just evaporated. He is a hypocrite after the stuff he said about Bill Clinton and trying to impeach him....and here he is banging broads in Argentina on Fathers Day weekend while the family is twisting in the wind...

More troublesome to me is the fact he left the state without any warning or any heads up...that is just inexcusable. He is a selfish prick. Good Riddance.

I love his original excuse for the vacation...because he was so stressed due to the stimulus legislation. he's been a complete asshole throughout this whole process.

It's news and i personally like seeing this guy go down in flames. He left his state without leadership for a week to go **** someone in argentina. He didnt even tell the american embassy he was there

I couldn't care less about his affair. I didn't even mention it in my post. Mark Sanford has a job, and that job is Govenor of South Carolina. It is his duty to act in the best interests of his constituents and to be available at all times--even on vacation. No one could get in touch with the guy for five days. No one--not even his freakin' staff--knew where he was or how to contact him. Are you really going to defend that? You can't just leave a job for five days with no word; I don't care if you're govenor of a state or a Taco Bell janitor.

in colonial times, it was easy to contact politicians by e-mail or cellphone. they were always available, and when needed, they could be whisked back to Washington DC or to the state capitol by helicopter. oh wait... that didn't have any of those things back then and we seemed to have gotten along just fine.

this is just an issue for those wishing to make hay. he's a republican. you don't like him. i get it. don't vote for him next time. i've already said he was an idiot for having an affair.

here's a secret... your life and my life would be better if all politicians went away and did nothing for 6 months out of the year!

his book says he and michelle had marital difficulties around 2000. that's a pretty well understood codeword since clinton used it to brush off his numerous affairs. in 2004, he apparently involved with Vera Baker, who was sent packing from his campaign by an angry michelle (she's always angry BTW).

i don't doubt that obama has been more faithful than clinton though. sadly for obama, his one true love is himself. hard to have an affair with oneself.

OK John...a "code word" based on Clinton's stuff? Hilarious! But that's not what you said John..you said that Obama "admitted" to an extramarital affair in his book. That's a lot different than his wife saying they had some "marital difficulties". I also had some "marital difficulties" this afternoon with Mrs. Footsteps who didn't like me losing something she gave me a few days ago. We even had a few words...I didn't cheat on her though...which is what you claim Obama ADMITTED to in his book. So I ask you again...which book, and what page is this on? I want to check for myself so I can be sure you're not just another lying dirtbag.
in 2004, he apparently involved with Vera Baker, who was sent packing from his campaign by an angry michelle (she's always angry BTW).
I looked up Vera Baker and all I see so far is some Fox News stuff...rumors and inuendo on a few rightwing blogs, that kind of thing, most of which sounds like poppycock...one story says Hillary Clinton's campaign floated this along with other dirty tricks. Maybe an exhaustive search of Google would find this huge story burried somewhere deep in the bowels of the world's most heavily trafficked search engine though, so if you would be so kind as to post the actual link to an actual factually based story that offers real proof of this instead of political gossip or other rightwing bull**** that would be great John...thanking you in advance BTW.

I'm wonderng this John...why has the mass media not jumped all over this story of an Obama affair like they did with Clinton? I mean...Clinton WAS a liberal like Obama is so that can't be it, and he DID have a real affair...several in fact...so where is the media blitzkrieg of information here John?

Please post the page number of his book where Obama admits an affair and the links that show proof of this story being true instead of rumors and unsubstantiated crap.

You, in other words. Let's be honest here. The only reason you came on to this thread is because another one of your rightard heros was caught cheating and lying and you came in here to throw a tantrum and try and blame it on somebody else (the basic right wing response). So, just like some jilted toddler, you make up some silly **** about Obama as if it will make up for another uber-fail by one of your "holier than thou" heroes, this time one ditching his kids on Father's Day to bonk his GF. Or, you try the idiotic argument that it's no big deal if the executive of a state just walks off the job for five days without telling anybody anything. But hey, things are looking up for the rightards. This time, your guy was actually caught with a woman. Wonder of wonders! Not a boy or a passing stranger in a men's bathroom, but an actual woman! I really wonder sometimes if some people don't carry around a self-destruct button inside them. The country starts putting their name in as a serious contender for the top job and what do they do? Hit the button. Boom. All the pressure disappears. Self-sabotage. Sanford isn't the first. Judging by his speech yesterday, he doesn't have a clue what happened. Interesting point, there's probably something to this. I don't know about this serious contender stuff though. The guy is a blowhard who just looked incredibly silly during the stimulus debate. Like many of the republican politicians these days, i dont think he'd ever be taken seriously at the national level. Plus, this country, judging from polls, is NOT moving in a libertarian direction...regardless of what people on this board seem to think (just look at healthcare/public plan polls).
