I need help putting together an All-Time AFC West team, I'm a young guy, I dont know much about the 70's and before.
I got into an argument with a co-worker (Panther Fan) who said his (NFC South) would beat ours, and I pretty much laughed in his face.

Off the top of my head, only the NFC East could compete with us in an All Time Division Team.

I suggest replacing Lester Hayes with the Broncos Louie Wright. Hayes benefited from the Raiders PR machine - Wright was the better overall cornerback.

Some thoughts:

Kicker: Blanda - afterall he could back up the QB's too.

RB: Dickerson and Marcus Allen

WR: Steve Largent (are we including old Seahawks?)

DT: Cortez Kennedy(another old Seahawk)

DE: Deacon Jones - a must have on this list

I'll say one thing, no division can compete with the AFC West when it comes to TE's. Shannon Sharpe, Tony Gonzalez, Dave Casper, Kellen Winslow, Antonio Gates, Riley Odoms, Todd Christensen.

Gene Upshaw was a guard. I would include Jim Otto at C, Willie Brown CB, Bobby Bell and Willie Lanier LB, all are HOF's. Also, Junior Seau.

Lester Hayes is not even the greatest Raiders corner ever. Willie Brown and Michael Haynes are #1 and #2 on that list.

Here's mine--No backups., but i'll select two RB's instead of a FB.

QB--Elway
RB1--Tomlinson
RB2--Bo Jackson
TE--Gonzalez
WR1--Alworth
WR2--Tim Brown (although I would love to have Otis Taylor somewhere)
OT--Shell
G--Shields
C--Otto
G--Upshaw
OT--Zimmerman (Roaf didn't paly enough of his careeer with KC)

DE--Long
DT--Buchanan
DE--N. Smith
OLB--Thomas
ILB--Lanier
ILB--Seau
OLB--B. Bell
CB--W. Brown
CB--A. Lewis
SS--Atwater
FS--Harrison

Too Chiefs heavy in all likelyhood, but I don't care.

RB-1 = Terrel Davis
RB-2 = Bo Jackson

LT although great is nothing compared to those guys. No brainer hall-of-famers had their seasons not been destroyed.

How is Big Bad Karl Mecklenberg not a backup on this team?

Derrick Thomas aka DT..
DT = Doesn't Tackle.... is the most over-rated AFC West player.

Junior Seau
Ted Hendricks
Bill Ray Smith
Tom Jackson
Karl Mecklenberg
Bobby Bell

Were all infinitely better players AND weren't "one trick ponies".

I don't know that I would include Dickerson or Jones. Neither had much of a contribution to the AFC West. Dickerson played with the Raiders 1 year and had minimal impact as did Jones who played with the Chargers for two years at the end of his career, and had no impact.

At QB I would add Dan Fouts, receiver Largent, Alworth and did we forget Rod Smith? I don't believe it's being a homer to include Davis. At TE I would add Winslow. And one of my favorite non Bronco players at DL-Howie Long. One of the few Raider players who played a clean game and loved the respect between him and Elway.

DT definately was not overrated and would of challenged the all time sack record had he not got hurt.

you need to get another look at what LT has accomplished in this league...

he's far out in front of the other backs you mentioned...

Derrick Thomas had entire defenses build around him so he could sack the QB....

1.) Bruce Smith - 200

2.) Reggie White - 198

3.) Kevin Greene - 160

4.) Chris Doleman - 150

5.) Michael Strahan - 141

6.) John Randle - 137

7.) Richard Dent - 137

8.) Lawrence Taylor - 132

9.) Leslie O'Neal - 132

10.) Rickey Jackson - 128

11.) Derrick Thomas - 126

12.) Simeon Rice - 122

13.) Clyde Simmons - 121

14.) JASON TAYLOR - 120

15.) Sean Jones - 113

16.) Greg Townsend - 109

17.) Pat Swilling - 107

18.) Trace Armstrong - 106

19.) KEVIN CARTER - 104

19.) Neil Smith - 104

Note: Active players are in CAPS.

I guess Kevin Greene, Chris Doleman, John Randle, Richard Dent, Leslie O'Neal & Rickey Jackson should be in the Hall Of Fame...

Still takes skill to get to the QB. Compare how many years each of those guys played. You can't controll who you play with only your own responsibilities and DT was one of the best ever.
