View Full Version : ESPN : "Moreno not necessarily starter worthy"

While it seemed obvious on NFL draft day that first-round pick Knowshon Moreno would end up the latest Denver Broncos running back to run for 1,000-yard glory in his debut season, the team remains cautious in its stance with the 12th overall pick. It still is only June, and teams are running organized team activities, not real games, but Moreno is listed third on the team depth chart behind Correll Buckhalter and LaMont Jordan.

"I'm just learning," Moreno told The Denver Post. "They've been in the league eight or nine years. Coming behind them and learning from them and maybe one day making my way up there is awesome."

Moreno is, of course, saying all the right things, but he has the ability to be a starting NFL running back and fantasy monster pretty much out of the gate, and fantasy owners should remember the Mike Shanahan era is over in Denver. New coach Josh McDaniels might be playing favorites with his veterans at this point and might not be so apt to make lineup changes on the fly, without warning and often defying explanation. Moreno's being third on the depth chart also might be short-lived, but fantasy owners need to be a bit cautious if they're drafting anytime soon. Moreno is ranked 29th at running back by ESPN Fantasy, so we aren't assuming the rookie will go bonkers in 2009.

McDaniels could work the rookie slowly into the lineup because he does have other assets at his disposal. Buckhalter has never carried the load as the starter, but he did average 4.9 yards per carry as the Eagles' second option in 2008, and he's been relatively injury free the past three seasons. Jordan, who worked with McDaniels in New England last season, has had one big NFL season, when he ran for 1,000 yards, caught 70 passes and scored 11 touchdowns for the 2005 Raiders. He likely will be more of a goal-line back at 30 years old, but who knows. Without Moreno, the Broncos seemed set to use some combination of Buckhalter, J.J. Arrington (since released), Jordan, Ryan Torain and Peyton Hillis. Moreno could trump them all or be used sparingly in September.

I use to get a kick out of the ESPN radio guys doing "camp reports" at Dove Valley. They'd sit in their little white tents Bsing with people all camp long and then do a camp report after camp would end without ever seeing practice.

At least Kaylore and SoCal for instance would watch practice and give their opinions.

people get paid to write this stuff, there is literally pages and pages of better writing here on the mane form everyone, what a joke. I wish reporters woudl just call ti as they see it, take a stance "Moreno is a rookie, and McDaniels isn't gonna throw him to the wolves. Don't draft him in your fantasy, but rather pick him up mid-season." End of story.

wow, so he is 3rd on a penciled in depth chart in a situation where he has yet to strap on any pads, take a meaningful snap in the NFL, or fully know the playbook. that is some incredible reporting. ESPN sure wrote a hard hitting story with this.

i hate these retarded little blurb reports, and sadly until the end of July this is all that we get.

This is yet another thread where I wish the title had been more forthcoming.

It should say: FANTASY SPIN--"Moreno not necessarily starter worthy".

Then I could have skipped it.

but fantasy owners need to be a bit cautious if they're drafting anytime soon.

I know some do it for whatever reason, but any commish that sets up his league's draft for any time prior to August 1st deserves to be killed on the spot. In reality it should be as close to week one as possible and no more than two weeks prior to the start of the season.

I understand, depending on what site you use, that there can be scheduling difficulties during the "ideal" days leading up to week one....but June?!? C'mon now.

its just a fantasy spin....

drafting rookie RBs in fantasy is always a risky proposition...although Slaton owners were rewarded last year

i ended up taking Stewart a few picks before slaton...cost me the league

I do think from a fantasy perspective, we'll spread the ball around a lot. There probably won't be one home-run RB from our roster.

That said, I'm still jacked about Moreno's ability. He's a true, natural runner, imo.

Did Kaylor spend a lot of time watching Kuper in his stance and Socal masterbate to Ian Gold?

Lol at them basing a report on passing camp depth:
"Based on what we've seen, they're going to alternate between Simms and Orton every other series! :O :O :O "

People are really making mountains out of mole hills on this. Moreno isn't going to be #1 on the depth chart for a while.

He's an awesome talent and I think he'll be a difference maker from day one, but right now we're implementing a new offensive scheme with a new QB, we need veterans across the depth chart right now so everyone can learn the basics working with fundamentally sound players. Once the OL knows the tweaks made to the blocking scheme better, Orton and Simms get their barrings behind center, and the WRs and TEs begin to feel comfortable with what is being asked of them we'll be able to start playing musical chairs at RB, but until then veterans like Buckhalter and Jordan (the former from a similar system and very experienced, the later from the exact same system) are the best practice field choices to get the rest of the squad up to speed.

Love the criticism on the article. Trust the OM to bitch, bitch, bitch about ANYTHING.

The target audience is the average, not from Denver ya-hoo fantasy dweeb.

What did ya'll expect....some deep meaning of life statements on how, when and where Moreno will be used from a June 10th fantasy fill piece?

I swear some of you expect Pulitzer winning, JUNE, fantasy articles from dudes making <75K.

and TD was buried on the depth chart himself as a rook starting out...although i'm sure that's largely due to him being drafted so late...

Just for fun ... can anybody remember who TD was behind in 1995?

I'm pretty sure Gaston Green was gone ... I'll say Leonard Russell and Rod Bernstine ???

Or maybe Leonard Bernstein? :~ohyah!:

Russell was the leading rusher in 94 so I would think he would have been the man.

Rod Bernstine. He was sharing the carries with TD through the first few weeks (TD getting the bulk) until suffering an injury and never played again.

The depth chart always changes if someone shows significant production in games.
