This is one of life's hardest experiences IMO for any son who loved his dad. I'm a mess all over again because it reminds me of when I lost my dad. Christmas night 2005 of all nights.

I can't say anything to make Spider feel better. Nothing can do that IMO. All I can say is for those of you whose dads are still alive call him today and schedule some time with him. I don't care where you are, where he is, how busy you are, get it friggin done, and then do it again and again every chance you get.

I was lucky enough to spend the night before it happened and sit on the back porch throwing down a few beers. Told him that night that I loved him.

A lot of advice from people you have never met is all B.S and worthless, but if your dad is alive I would seriously consider reading the posts of those of us who have lost their dads.

It's a gut punch, for sure. I lost may dad a couple monthes ago after a long decline. In fact, in 6 days his birthday will pass for the first time. That will be strange. Oddly, a friend posted on his facebook that his dad passed last night.

You're in good company, Spider. Surround yourself with family and friends to say your goodbyes... then get on with the task of living, babe. You only get so many days.

Wow mom and dad. What a huge bummer. Since my dad passed on I finally understand what people meant when they say make the most of the time you have. I think my dad did that, now I want to make sure I honor him by doing the same.

I think all of our dads would tell us to stop crying and live your life but that sure is easier said then done I just miss him so much.

I agree that recounting the good times and your moms and dads great deeds is a good thing. Not only does it help but you might even find yourself smiling as you remember.

When it comes to the grief there is nothing really anyone can say that makes you feel better. It has to come from inside yourself.

My last two years, I spent on funeral detail its the single hardest thing I have done. Dealing with the familes, and hearing the stories, saddest one this little girl as we were folding the flag little girl jump on the flag and was crying saying she wanted her grandfather back. My crew was struggling to stay professional, I approached the little girl and picked up her, and took her to her grandmother. She was screaming and crying and everything. I hand the flag to the grandmother she touched my hand and said son you look just like my late husband when he was 24 years old. That hit me hard and I understood right then, why people want the military there to help out in saying goodbye to their loved ones. It was an honor to put my fellow soldiers in the ground, and hopefully, we will all set up in Heaven and have a couple cold ones and tell war stories. Spider this made me call my dad today and just say I love you. Im sorry for you loss, but you made me do something that i dont do all the time. Its a hard lesson learned I guess. Some of us forget the most important things in life. Our parents our loved ones or even close friends. Tell them how you feel because you never know what tomorrow will bring. Spider, Sorry for you loss again. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

Tough duty that has it's moments. I remember the difficult times my father had when he was on the same assignment during Vietnam. He was able to do a year on the detail after he was back to the world ...

Taps ripped my heart out , we didnt have a baby sitter so I had to take the triplets , they made everyone cry when they started crying and said night night pappa ....... One of My Cousins stood up and told the story of my dad , they was running team and his partner heated up the breaks , down on wolf creek pass , cars in front of them , cars coming the opposite way , my dad drove that truck right over the cliff to save everyone on the highway ........ The Preacher read some passage out of the bible , I had no Idea my dad got religion in the end , but the preacher felt as if he knew me and my family super well , He said , When your dad spoke of his grandkids , you would think he was telling about how he won the superbowl ........ He was that proud ...
The Military funeral kicked ass ............

My dad passed away in 1996.

Here's what someone did for me (a colleague from work, who I didn't know well) . . . gave me a small frame along with a sympathy card.

Find a frame, and put a picture of your father in it and remember all the good times.
