well I thought they had to be alive still, wasn't that the criteria so technically neither Pryor or Carlin would fall into that (having said that though they are two of the best ever).

John Cleese is stand up? Comedian no doubt, but does he do a standup act. Don't get me wrong, I love the guy, but didn't know if he did standup.

Since Pryor, Carlin & Dangerfield are all dead, I guess I'll have to go with a young Robin Williams. He did a video in the early 80's in S.F. that had me in stitches.

An honorable mention would have to go to :

Bill Cosby, Jeff Foxworthy, and Jerry Sienfeld.

Having re-read the question, you're right.

I was reacting more to other posts.....some of which had listed dead comedians.
Also correct about Cleese, but at least he is alive.

I got carried away listing the funniest comedians, instead of 'Stand up comedians alive today who were influenced by much funnier dead guys'. ;D.

So I'm left with Lewis Black........I'll add Eddie Izzard and Johnathan Winters.

Rodney is dead I guess, so he doesn't count.

Okay, this won't be popular, but hear me out: Jay Leno. Before he got the Tonight Show, he was a killer comic, too funny for words. In 1984 I was at the Comedy Works (or whatever the club is in Larimer Square), and I was so doubled up in laughter I was in pain ... my head in my lap I was praying he would just stop talking so I could get a grip on myself.

Chris Rock's Black Ambition Tour is the best comedy I've ever seen on TV.

“A lot of us amateurs can make people laugh and some of us can occasionally even make people think twice about the daily nonsense of their lives. But with his clarity of vision and gift of words, if Bill Hicks had had any more time he might have started a revolution.”

Keith Olberman, MSNBC opinion-head and former ESPN Sportscaster

“He was a genius. He was one of the five best comics I've ever seen in my life.”

—Dennis Miller

“Bill Hicks—blowtorch, excavator, truth-sayer, and brain specialist, like a reverend waving a gun around. He will correct your vision. Others will drive on the road he built”

— Tom Waits

“Savage, brilliant, funny, tremendously intelligent.”

—John Cleese

“He was hilarious, brilliant, brave, and right about everything”

— Henry Rollins

“An inspired and inspring truth teller, dangerous and brave and scary, all at once.”
