View Full Version : Why did Tampa leapfrog Denver to select Josh Freeman? Any indications we wanted him?

This was probably discussed at draft time, but I do find it very intriguing that Tampa Bay had the 19th pick and leapfrogged us to the 17th pick to select Josh Freeman.

Obviously, their intelligence must have shown that Denver was really, REALLY interested in Freeman because otherwise, they would not have made the jump.

What do you guys think? You think we had a hard-on for Freeman?

I dont buy it. He seems like the antithesis of a McDaniels QB. He's woefully inaccurate.

i think they were worried that we might want him since we were linked to Sanchez and were obviously at some point during the draft going to draft a QB. so to be safe they decided to jump ahead of us. Not necessarily out of intel that we wanted him but because they were worried that since we had a need for a QB we might have taken Freeman. Or they heard another team was looking to jump up to our spot or 17 to get Freeman and they just did whatever it took to get him.

whatever the case, i really don't think we wanted him

It was a longshot at best...highly unlikely

They knew Denver was stuck with this

We didnt want Freeman, I remember McDaniels commenting on that and he kind of laughed at the notion.

Of course its possible he was just supporting Orton, but if we were serious about the top qbs, Cutler would be a Redskin or Lion right now instead of a Bear

are we really going to evaluate a QB from his rookie season?...

i can count on one hand how many QBs are successful as a rook...

Whoever they traded with probably convinced them that we did just to get out of the spot. This happens to teams all the time.

Desmond Clark is awesome.

Didn't Dan Reeves bring him in?

I think they were afraid that another team might trade up and get him at 17 or 18, since they had to give up very little it was better to be safe than sorry.

When its all said and done, Josh Freeman will be the best QB out of this draft.

Well given that we sold the farm to get some of the guys, I have to think if we REALLY wanted Freeman we would have traded up to take him like we did all our other players. So, yeah I think we did get the guys we wanted. You can knock the spending we did, but no one can argue we settled for anyone in this draft.

It could be that they had no idea if we liked Freeman, but wanted him so bad they couldn't take the chance. Once he was available, they had a team and a trade they felt was worth it, they pulled the trigger.

Even if Broncos had not wanted Freeman there is always a chance some other team would have called Denver and made a move to that spot.

Lol theres not much competition.

Stafford was the first pick in the draft. Sanchez went in the top 5.

I think that Freeman will have a better career. I made that statement because alot of people on this site are critical of Freeman.

I'm pretty sure they wanted BJ Raji, but couldn't get up to #8 in front of Green Bay because Jacksonville knew if they moved down at all Eugene Monroe goes #9 instead and they don't get the OT they want.

So no, they didn't get everyone they wanted. But they got a lot of guys they really, really liked heading into the draft.

This was probably discussed at draft time, but I do find it very intriguing that Tampa Bay had the 19th pick and leapfrogged us to the 17th pick to select Josh Freeman.

What do you guys think? You think we had a hard-on for Freeman?

No. Not interested whatsoever if you ask me. They targeted #12 as their chance to move up for Raji and baring that to grab Moreno, and #18 was for a versatile DE/OLB type for Nolan's system, with Ayers at or near the top of that list.

Cleveland probably convinced Tampa that they had another interested party looking to move up. That or Tampa figured the marginal cost of leaping from #19 to #17 was worth it to make sure they got their guy, even if there wasn't solid info that anyone else was interested. Cost them what, like a 4th rounder or something? Small potatoes when you're looking to draft a new QB you think will lead your franchise for years to come.

The report was that TB was afraid that MIN was going to make the jump to get Freeman. So Denver was not even involved in the Freeman thing.

Raheem Morris coached Freeman for a year at Kansas State, and he obviously liked his potential as an NFL QB...

They have a rookie coach still wet behind the ears...probably prone to panic and make silly decisions.

Conventional wisdom would have suggested that the Broncos were after a QB. I don't think McD was interested in him... remember McD said that he almost took Ayers at 12. So I'm willing to assume that Ayers was really high on McD's draft board.

I didn't hear that; actually very interesting!

It doesn't suprise me that he was that high, I was very happy with his being there when we picked again though!

we currently have Orton and Simms slap fighting for the QB job ...... does wanting another QB rumor really sound shocking??
