One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Notes. . . .

We interrupt today's regularly scheduled Nuggets note for this important announcement: The wise guys in Vegas don't believe in Josh McDaniels.

How do we know? Because the over/unders for NFL win totals have hit the board at the Las Vegas Hilton, the world's largest sports book, and the Broncos are listed at 7.5.

That's it. Mike Shanahan was shown the door after an 8-8 season, and Vegas doesn't envision things getting any better in his absence. And just so you know . . . the man responsible for that number is Hilton sports-book director Jay Kornegay, a Denver native who bleeds orange and blue.

"The number not only represents the changes they made, but their schedule is just plain brutal," Kornegay said. "From Week 4 through Week 12, it's very ugly, unless you're a Chargers fan. They might even lose during that bye week.

"They better get off to a fast start or fans will be calling for Carmelo & Co. by early October. Never thought I'd say that." . . .

2009 NFL Wins Over/Unders

Once again, the Pats have the highest total, a full win above the Steelers (and five cents more juice as well). Not surprisingly, the winless Lions have the lowest number at five, but the Rams and Raiders aren't far behind (or ahead), especially considering the juice.

Ignoring the juice, here are the averages for each division:

Last year there was a big difference between the AFC and NFC (8.03 vs. 7.72), but that has closed almost entirely this season, with the AFC barely ahead, 8.03 to 8.00. Which is interesting, especially when you consider that Sportsbook has installed the AFC as a three-point favorite in the Super Bowl. The location of the best teams is more important for that type of thing, and indeed the AFC's top four (NE, PIT, IND, SD) average 10.4, while the NFC's four best (NYG, PHI, DAL/MIN/GB) come in at 9.4.

The NFC West is at the bottom for the second straight season, although this year they're joined by their AFC counterparts. At the top, the NFCE and AFCS have swapped spots. For the most part these are pretty similar to the '08 numbers, with thie biggest difference being the NFC South jumping from 7.13 to 7.88. They have the Falcons, who went from 4.5 to 8, to thank for that.

The only other teams to see their totals change by two or more wins were the Ravens, going from 6 to 8.5, and the Jaguars, dropping from 10 to 8.

Patriots 12 under -130

Giants 10.5 under -140

Chargers 10.5 under -150

Steelers 11 under -125

Cowboys 9.5 over -120

I like the over @5.5 for the fins.

I'd be surprised if we won 7 with our traveling east 7 times?

That's not believing in us? I'd say 7.5 wins is about right, maybe even optimistic if you consider a new scheme, lots of new players and a brutal schedule.

It's way too early to tell. If Vegas wants to speculate that's their bag. I'll wait til I see how they look in preseason before I speculate.

I hate to say it, but I will. I'm thinking 4 wins. It's gonna be ugly.
