The worst drivers in America live in New York. Of course, you knew that. You've been in the Holland Tunnel. But now, we have proof.

GMAC Insurance has released the results of its National Drivers Test for 2009. The test, which measures basic knowledge of driving laws, was given to more than 5,000 drivers from all 50 states and the District of Columbia -- and New Yorkers finished last. Last year's loser, New Jersey, improved its score just enough to leap over New York. Hawaii, California and Georgia rounded out the bottom five.

Car Insurance (Bad Drivers Welcome!)

Idaho and Wisconsin drivers tied for the highest average score, with an 80.6.

The point of the test, of course, is not just to confirm what anyone who's tried to merge onto the Thruway already knew. It's to measure how much we know about safe driving. And the news isn't good.

In a press release, GMAC explains, "Results from the 2009 GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test released today found that 20.1 percent of licensed Americans - amounting to roughly 41 million drivers on the road - would not pass a written drivers test exam if taken today." Most of us have trouble, according to the results, with "questions about yellow lights and safe following distances."

The survey has been given for five years. The average score has fluctuated up and down during that time, but this year it is down - 76.6 percent versus last year's 78.1.

GMAC notes, "In general, geographical regions ranked similarly to previous years, with the lowest average test scores in the Northeast, while the states in the Midwest held the highest averages. When comparing genders, men are still more likely to pass the test than women, but the gap is considerably smaller in 2009 (81 percent of males versus 79 percent of females) than in 2008 (87 percent of males versus 80 percent of females)."

And, "The older the driver, the higher the test score." Drivers over 35 were more likely to pass than those under 35, while men over 45 posted the highest scores, and "the age group with the highest failure rates was young adults (18 to 24 years old)."

Curious how you'd do? Take the test yourself at nationaldriverstest.com (http://www.nationaldriverstest.com/). When you're finished, GMAC will even let you play a video game that teaches you how to avoid elderly people and aliens in the roadway (no, we're not kidding).

That's an easy test.

...and yes the results confirm that the Northeast and California do have the WORST FRIGGING DRIVERS.

In Hawaii they are just "relaxing" and in Georgia they're busy loading their hunting rifles while on the road.

I figured CO would be high.

You idiots do not know how to merge into traffic or let people merge.

I go out there once a year and it seems I see at least one person stopped on the ramp trying to get on a highway.

I think the worst traffic/drivers I ever seen was in Mexico City, Acapulco was a little better but only because there were less cars.

I can't speak for the 19 states I've not driven in, but by far the worst drivers I've seen are here in Dallas, and I actually taught people to drive when i lived in Southern CA in the '80's, which was utterly frightening. At least in CA most people had skill...they were nuts but they had skill. Here they're both nuts and unskilled.

Those are all the drivers from california (it didn't used to be like this) before the housing boom now it's a idiot show out there.

I've driven quite a bit in CO, AZ and CA and California drivers are BY FAR the worst. Here in San Diego, the little old Asian women drivers are legendary. Avoid them at all costs.

People here in San Diego couldn't drive in a straight line if they were on rails.

I vote for New Jersey. The drivers, roads, and signs suck. Plus the state stinks in general. I apologize in advance to any New Jersey residents but I never hear anything positive about the area even from the people who live there.

Living and driving in Utah no one can tell me that Utah has that good of drivers. I thought the people in California drove great and in Texas they were too, I turned on my blinker and a car actually slowed to let me over. Unbelievable. People in Utah are in a hurry to get no where. They do not know what the passing lane is, they think it's the sight seeing lane. Do not know what a blinker is. You've got a mixture of all kinds of bad in Utah.

More like Cheese or milk trucks for Wisconisin.

Their Police like to camp out at the IL boarder and nab us FIB'S (****ing Il Bastards) on the way home.

Their Cops write tickets and give no quarter. They don't bother you on the way in though.

No surprise my home state has among the worst drivers. For those of you who haven't visited, you've never seen anything like it. I've driven all over the country and people here are unreal. It's like a video game... and they're trying to hit you.

Northeast drivers are the worst but that's partially because they have to keep their middle fingers free for expressing themselves. With a cell phone in their hand, there are no hands left to actually steer the vehicle with.

I swear the people in Massachussetts believe stop lights are optional.

We consider traffic control devices and speed limits "opinions" here in the Northeast. Enter at your own risk.

This makes no sense. They probably gave the test to people who lived within the city who dont even drive. For example I have a 50 year old uncle who never got his license and also a grandmother who has her license but has driven 1 time in the last 50 years.
