Lots to choose from but I'm curious to see some other lists. I know there are subcategories like Slap Stick Comedy, Romantic Comedy, etc. I like some of those okay but the pure comedy's are my favorites.

The Jerk
Tommy Boy
Office Space

the reason no one mentioned Harlem Nights is because, outside of the chick kicking Eddie's ass in the alley and the opening card playing scene, the movie isn't that funny.

notice no one else has $hit on anyones picks ? ... cause these are opinions ...

But since we are going there. Having Idiocracy in your list is very telling.
Besides Beverly Hills Cop , the Kevin Smith flicks and Raising Arizona I hated about all those .

the big lebowski hated didn't make it through
office space hated didn't make it through
midnight run Never even heard of it and had to google it.
beverly hills cop Would make my comic top 15 probably
tropic thunder Didn't see it cause it didn't look like something I'd like
shaun of the dead Didn't see it cause it didn't look like something I'd like
grosse point blank Didn't see it cause it didn't look like something I'd like
harold and kumar go to white castle Seen it , It was average at best
Dogma Would make my comic top 15 probably
clerks Would make my comic top 15 probably
raising arizona Would make my comic top 15 probably
40 year old virgin hated didn't make it through
idiocracy hated didn't make it through
super troopers hated didn't make it through
bill and ted's excellent adventure Liked , one of my teen years favs ... But wouldn't make any list ..

Opinion tho ,one that I had previously kept to myself when I read your list...

Harlem Nights wouldn't make my all time top 25 or anything ... But Comedies only it would probably crack MY top 15 A ton of funny stuff in it AND EVERYTHING Redd Foxx says in it kills me...

And 0 hard feelings Bman4ever , me and you are normally on the same page and get along and I always read your post just to look at your av :approve:

but it annoys me when someone judges taste and speaks of their own like it's fact in one of these type threads and is why so many lurk or never share ...

moving on ...

Midnight Run is a great film but I never really thought of it as a comedy...sure it had funny moments in it, but calling it a comedy would be like calling Goodfellas a comedy, somehow it just doesn't work.

I never got the whole Office Space thing either....it's just one of those films that everyone and their brother seems to love (like say.. Fight Club) that I didn't find either all that funny or enjoyable. Just me I guess or it could just be that I find John C. McGinley a very unfunny man who drives me up the wall. Oh well....:ouwknow:

Midnight run was a comedy, but it was also a "buddy" movie i guess. Just a different plot, so its a bunch of different types of movies all in one.
Great movie, GREAT MOVIE.

Office Space is a movie that has a cult backing because people can relate to the "9 to 5" job that it was centered around.
HEY! "9 to 5" i can barely remember this movie, but i think it got rave reviews. A bit before my time.

Also add Stripes to the list as well.

I'm no good for this stuff tho cause I'm HATE THE CLASSICS guy ... Everything that is thought of as classic I normally hate or won't sit through.

Gladiator -
Never wanted to see it cause thought i wouldn't like ... watched this winter cause I like Crowe ... Thought it was ok...

Brave heart -
Hated , never seen all the way through in one sitting ... Make it to about where the moon the other army and my this is stupid alarm goes off ... The Chick is WAY hot tho ...

Pulp Fiction-
Didn't see it till a few years ago , Hated , don't understand the hype . S.L.J is funny , but the movie is stupid mostly ...

The Silence of the Lambs-
Finally seen it a year or so ago ... Was mislead by the marketing and thought was going to be gross .... ACTUALLY liked it ...

The Matrix -
Hated it , Dude My Name... Is Neo , Whoa ...

Stuff I have never seen cause either I knew I wouldn't like or just didn't care

God Father
miracle on 34th street
E.T -never seen
reservoir dogs
It's a Wonderful Life
The Shawshank Redemption
The Lord of the Rings , All of them .
Apocalypse Now , which i want to see now that I know more about it ...
Taxi Driver
Blade Runner
The Green Mile
Platoon

I could go on and on tho ...

My guitarist says I'm unamerican because I hate the classis hehe ... It stretches to music as well . I'll just say I hate Zeppelin and leave it at that . ROFL!

I like movies tho I swear hehe ...

A Perfect World . Love Costner as a bad guy.
Goodfellas
Gump
Rules of Engagement
Apollo 13
Man on Fire
American Gangster
Happy Gilmore
Water Boy
Something about Mary
The Dark Knight 1/2
Dogma
Clerks
Robin Hood 1991- guilty pleasure
Bedazzled - guilty pleasure
The Ref
The Kingdom
Breach
Transformers ... I'm a fan boy , I'll own it.
Cinderella Man
A Beautiful Mind
Proof of Life
Heartbreak Ridge
The Fugitive
Reign over me

Whew 25/26 if we count both Batmans , that was harder then i thought .... That isn't a all time list just 25 I like i can name  tho many of those would make my all time 25 . My favs are normally dramas or history "based" ...

I find it amusing that you state this after mentioning in this same thread that a film centered around a simpleton who's stupidity is seen as a redemptive quality is "one of my top 5 fav movies all time all genres included."

I just see Gump as great writing and story ... "Maybe" my fav fiction movie.
And it interlaces history which I'm a fan of .
When I think greatest STORY ever told ... I think Gump.

You may see it as a movie poking fun at a moron .
Where many see it as a story of life of overcoming and ALL his lifes encounters , some that happened to be funny.

Not everyone who seen it took it as you must have if you think people liked it cause they seen stupidity as his redemptive quality and enjoyed laughing at a moron ...

Yea a guy who fights a war , saves people , stands up for his love , and you think people like it cause he's dumb ...

You must be real deep..

Fight club on the other hand ...
Is a movie about a guy who thinks he has a friend who ends up being him , while having random fights with others who just LIVE to fight and going out and stealing body fat somehow throwing it from on top a fence all over himself in a plot to bring down the man.

yea sounds totally relevant and well thought .

Is a movie about a guy who thinks he has a friend who ends up being him , while having random fights with others who just LIVE to fight and going out and stealing body fat somehow throwing it from on top a fence all over himself in a plot to bring down the man.

yea sounds totally relevant and well thought .

It actually is. You might not like the social commentary of Fight Club, but to call it shallow or less than thought out means you obviously dont get it. Read the book, it might actually help you gain perspective on the movie.

I know exactly what the movie is TRYING to tell us . It's the same story as like 100 other movies.
I just think how they went about it was stupid, worthless and a waste of a hour and a half ...
Trying to be all edgy of the sake of being edgy and it ends up stupid for the sake of being stupid ...

But to call it Shallow or less then thought out seems to hit it right on the head tho ... It's like Look I'll tell a story that's been told a million times and do it in a way that is totally stupid and pitched at teens to 20s with a axe to grind.

It was edgy...12 or so years ago. To be fair, every story on this earth; even your beloved forrest gump borrows from other stories, so I dont see what your point is there. There is nothing new under the sun.

People are entitled to their opinion in regards to what film they like. Tastes are different. But for you to say that people who enjoy films such as Fight Club are "simple" after stating that Forrest Gump is so great (oh, and I never said anything about poking fun or laughing at a moron) makes you come off as more of an ignoramus than your beloved protagonist.

Just finished watching Hot Rod with Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Bill Hader. I'm adding that to my top 10 list. I haven't laughed that hard in a few years. One funny ass movie man. You've got to watch if you haven't already. Think it's showing right now on HBO or Showtime, one of those premium channels. Released in 2007.

Have to plug some Christopher Guest films here:

--Spinal Tap (I know this flick is getting some love in this thread, but in addition to Guest's writing credit he portrayed one of the truly great comedic characters of all time, Nigel Tufnel... just worth a repeat mention).
--Waiting for Guffman (writer/director... Guest was great as Corky St. Claire in this masterpiece... don't know if this one's been mentioned here, but it's a great film).
--Best in Show (writer/director credit... very funny movie).

His others -- A Mighty Wind and For Your Consideration were just okay in my book, but he gets bonus points for being the Godfather of TV's The Office (both the Brit and American versions).

Got a chance to see C. Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer in their "Unwigged" tour here in Seattle... pretty funny.
