If al-Qaeda, the Taliban and the rest of the Looney Tunes brigade want to kick America to death, they had better move in quickly and grab a piece of the action before Barack Obama finishes the job himself. Never in the history of the United States has a president worked so actively against the interests of his own people - not even Jimmy Carter.

Obama's problem is that he does not know who the enemy is. To him, the enemy does not squat in caves in Waziristan, clutching automatic weapons and reciting the more militant verses from the Koran: instead, it sits around at tea parties in Kentucky quoting from the US Constitution. Obama is not at war with terrorists, but with his Republican fellow citizens. He has never abandoned the campaign trail.

That is why he opened Pandora's Box by publishing the Justice Department's legal opinions on waterboarding and other hardline interrogation techniques. He cynically subordinated the national interest to his partisan desire to embarrass the Republicans. Then he had to rush to Langley , Virginia to try to reassure a demoralised CIA that had just discovered the President of the United States was an even more formidable foe than al-Qaeda.

"Don't be discouraged by what's happened the last few weeks," he told intelligence officers. Is he kidding? Thanks to him, al-Qaeda knows the private interrogation techniques available to the US intelligence agencies and can train its operatives to withstand them - or would do so, if they had not already been outlawed.

So, next time a senior al-Qaeda hood is captured, all the CIA can do is ask him nicely if he would care to reveal when a major population centre is due to be hit by a terror spectacular, or which American city is about to be irradiated by a dirty bomb. Your view of this situation will be dictated by one simple criterion: whether or not you watched the people jumping from the twin towers...

President Pantywaist's recent world tour, cosying up to all the bad guys, excited the ambitions of America 's enemies. Here, they realised, is a sucker they can really take to the cleaners. His only enemies are fellow Americans. Which prompts the question: why does President Pantywaist hate America so badly?

We took our principles and made them into law, via the Constitution. We are either a nation of laws, or we are not. Bush believed we are not. He believed that ideology is greater than country, and the passing opinions of the men who pulled his strings were more important than the laws that govern our people. I'm not sure yet what Obama believes, but if he acts to restore the laws that the Bush/Cheney cabal pissed all over, I'm all for it. I know one thing for sure, if we do not re-establish the rule of law, we will fall.

What I am concerned about is that this administration respect the Constitution, and looks to it, not just when convienent, even when it doesnt jive with with their ideology. I dont think that his appointments refelect that he has a strict constructionist view. Also, I am concerned about international law and treaties, how when we sign something, how that would then circumvent this governing document.

As someone who is right of center, forgive me for not seeing every example, but what examples (striaght foward ones can you give me) where Bush violated the Consitution? The one the first comes to mind is not protecting our border, as much as he should have, but I dont see any party doing a good job with that. I think his overspending put us further in slavery ...

Obama and his followers seem more worried about Rush Limbaugh SAYS than what terrorists DO.

The pissants complain about the Patriot Act, but have yet to offer even one, much less the countless people that claim whose rights would be violated from it. Forget it has actually saved lives. That's beside the point for the "smart" ones.

McCain wasn't born in the U.S. either! Palins' husband was a member of a radical group that supported Alaska to succeed from the Union!!! Yet over 56 million conservatives came out and voted for the Palin-McCain ticket.

So whats your point?:sunshine:

Was the Patriot Act even necessary? The multiple agencies charged with protecting America prior to 9-11 failed miserable to connect the dots, and the Bush Admin. had 9 months to connect the dots and possible thwart OBL; yet incompetence at every level of govt ruled the day btwn Jan 20th -Sept 11th 2001.

The day the Patriot Act was passed....OBL won a political victory......BE VERY AFRAID......REPUBLICANS WILL NEVER LET US SEE IT DIFFERENT.

Apparently you & al queda were the only ones in the world that didn't know. It's been public knowledge for quite some time. Hence the reason it was declassified.

Like we have to buck up the folks down at the CIA????

Are you kidding me?

These are the guys who gave us the Viet Nam War --and created al Qaeda -- and who undoubtedly offed JFK, RFK and MLKing...

among many others.

The CIA has existed OUTSIDE the US Constitution since 1948...

You still don't know this?

Apparently oubronco managed to sleep through the last 60+ years.

Niether party cares for America, they care for power, if they cared -- they would spend less and stop engaging in various power grabs.

That is one reason voting on party lable alone lends too much power, make them earn it.

Yeah equipment that has been delayed over and over due to problems and testing. Seems very anti-conservative of you to complain about not spending more money on a program that has already been allocated over 153 million dollars and so far has absolutely nothing to show for it, rather than taking a step back and figuring out a more time and cost efficient way to go at it. I guess you are only against throwing good money after bad and wasteful government spending when it suits you.

Well if what you stated is truth, perhaps. Too bad that's not the only thing it cuts, what about police officer benefits being cut? Ludicrous.

His only enemies are fellow Americans. Which prompts the question: why does President Pantywaist hate America so badly?

Kevin Drum had a great post on Mother Jones a few weeks back wherein he pondered why, exactly, so many on the far-right are feeling besieged and panicky. Why is it they feel the need to lash out at, demonize and obstruct Obama.

"Who, exactly, is their enemy these days?" Kevin asked. "I'm not sure they know themselves. But maybe that makes it worse.... like a horror movie where you're surrounded on all sides by something you can never quite make out, I guess it seems to them like there's something horrible going on, but it's something so insidious that they're only allowed to catch occasional foggy glimpses of it."

Steve Bennen at the Washington Monthly takes this thought another step, too.

"I think this also helps explain why truly batty conservatives like Bachmann and Glenn Beck fabricate dire threats that don't exist in our reality. They're struggling to deal with legitimate progressive policy ideas, so they're stuck manufacturing make-believe policy ideas that suit their worldview. Obama wants to adopt a global currency! He wants young people in government-sponsored re-education camps! He wants to take medical decisions away from doctors and give them to bureaucrats! He's going to impose a tax on every time we flip a light switch!

"These ideas are clearly delusional, but for those who need to see a political apocalypse, they apparently don't have a choice. Debating real ideas on the merits is proving too difficult, so they're creating their own reality and hoping their supporters play along."
