Anyone think the reason that Matt Cassel has not signed a long term deal with Kansas City, and the reason the Broncos front office decided not to keep Cutler, and not to get a starting QB in the draft is because McDaniels wants to steal Cassel next year?

If Cassel does not have a long term contract by the start of the season, the speculation is going to be endless.

I think his franchise salary from the Pats' tagging him is a ton of money this year (made him a rich man), and somehow that designation gives Pioli the latitude to watch him a year before they decide what to do ... there is some kinda latitude there that's cool for both sides.

A much bigger question to me is: Why is Jay Cutler playing this year for peanuts and the Bears are not signing him to a long term deal?

Couldn't KC just tag him again if need be?

That report has been debunked.

Not really. There is a big balloon in Cutler's contract next year, so he makes out like a bandit if it's rescheduled or not. The cutler wants a new contract meme was yet another smear from the Broncos FO.

Cutler would be plenty happy if they pay off the balloon.

Yeah, I distinctly recall reading that the Pats' franchise tag was great for both sides - it's essentially a chefs' contract, signed just days/weeks before he was traded ... it gives Cassel a real ton of money this season year, and the Chefs a chance to watch him for a year to make sure he's not a one-year wonder.

Randy Moss and Wes Welker might've been the best 1-2 WR combo in the league last year. If all I had was Dewayne Bowe, I would definitely wanna watch Cassel for a few regular season games before I gave him Romo-money, as Florio put it.

How can Cassel complain? Isn't a franchise tage worth the average of the Top 5 at that position? For QBs, that's gotta be an astronomical number.

Want a good laugh? Jamarcus Russell might actually be in that Top 5 :~ohyah!:
