View Full Version : Obama Wants 2018 World Cup

Barack Obama is politicking for the World Cup to return to US soil in 2018.

Bring it on!

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=642116&sec=us&root=us&cc=5901

For those who missed the opportunity to attend the games and festivities of the WC, make sure that you get tickets to this one early. With the heightened awareness international football among American citizens and the influx of many Latinos, tickets may become really hard to get the longer you wait. You'll be very glad you went.

The United States could possibly be a very formidable force by then!

Personally I'm all for bringing big events like the WC and Olympics to American cities. It's a point of pride for the country and a good excuse to renovate the cities. It may cost a bit of money but big deal. There are so many other benefits to it. Some measurable and some not.

In my opinion Soccer is about the most boring TV sport I have ever seen ...
It's worse then golf or bowling . Can't stand it.

Fact tho American TV stations hate soccer cause It is not set up well for Tv and ads ... How bad it works on tv is one of the biggest hurdles soccer has had getting over here .

But I personally don't see how anyone could sit through a soccer game without going crazy from being so bored ... That might explain the riots .

The only reason Soccer is the most popular sport in the world is due to how easy it is to get a game going. Poor countries can play soccer with ease. All you need is a ball and two trees to kick between... hell you could use a wall with a chalk outline as a net too. Try organizing American Football in Africa... the cost of the gear would be better spent getting food for 90% of the people there. So the sport grew and grew and now it's the biggest even though it's probably the most boring sport to watch in the world.

It's like NASCAR to me... instead of watching cars go in circles I'm watching guys kick a ball back and forth like PONG... sure you'll see some neato slide kicks and what not... but you get your goal "moment of excitement" only a few times out of the few hours you're there sitting there (getting drunk). Pentalty kicks are always fun to watch but outside of that Soccer is just an excuse by consumers to get drunk, scream, and start fights... and for the people who play it, it's just an cheap sport to play.

Rohirrim
05-01-2009, 08:28 PM
Yeah, sit there watching guys in shorts run around kicking a ball for three hours then the game ends with the score 0 to 0 and everybody packs up and goes home. And people make fun of golf. Ha!

Yes this simple game that most of us played in our youth is so beneath our understanding. It's not like we could possibly find guys running back and forth on an absurdly large field for an hour and a half to see scores of 1-0 in anyway boring. No sir-ee. If you don't like soccer you are an ignorant simpleton that doesn't understand the subtle nuances of kicking a ball into a net. People hate it here because it's boring. We have other sports like American Football which when you compare to Soccer completely destroy any kind of entertainment Soccer could give.

To put it in simple terms. WE ARE SPOILED BY AN EXCITING SPORT. Hell baseball is fun to watch too.

In Football we know every play there is going to be excitement to a certain degree. In Soccer, you just sit there and get bored. I lived in Germany and went to a professionals soccer game there just to say I had done it... was probably the most boring sporting event I had ever been to in my life. It was just people screaming as the guys on the field went back and forth... the game ended 1-0, with that score being about 20 minutes into the game.

In fact I had far more fun at the Special Olympics (not even joking, I volunteered to be a helper at one and got stuck doing some boring stuff, but the people competing were filled with energy and the events were short).

People talking like they're above everyone about how Soccer is amazing really just don't get it. It's a boring game... there's little to no action. The field is freaking huge... it's only popular because poor nations and individuals can play the sport with ease. Also don't forget Europe has a **** TON of nations... so a lot of teams inspire "patriotism" when one team fights another... in some cases its more about cheering for your country that it is the sport.

Also as for your comment about a woman not liking football. You'll find that most American women would go to a football game over a soccer game. Just because they're a different sex doesn't mean they don't know what's less action packed or fun to watch.

GREAT POST .... Always hated Hockey and soccer because they are so similar and boring and everything seems to happen so random / accidental .

And at least at my school soccer was the sport for those to scared or small for football and to uncoordinated for baseball ... The kids that road the pine in the others sports eventually quit those sports and played soccer . Cause it was "fun" ... or so that's what their moms said .

i was in the SF Bay area and the WC was only a big deal to the foreigners there. for most of us, life went on as usual. Brazil was training right down the road from me at Santa Clara University and some people made an effort to go and see them practice, but that was about it. the games played at Stanford were yawn-inducing. Russia, Colombia, Switzerland, and Cameroon are not exactly know for their large ex-patriot populations in the USA. Brazil was the only real draw for the locals.

i'm also a casual soccer fan and understand the difference between the quality of play in the USA and the rest of the world. i've been following the WC since Maradona's Hand of God goal in 1986. i just don't think the USA is the right venue for this event. it belongs in countries that are devoted to the sport.

Please do not include hockey in with soccer. Hockey is an absolutely great sport. Speed, violence, grace, pain, scoring, fights. It is all good with hockey.

You guys watch too much MLS. Watching the MLS should be a sin. I can't sit through an entire MLS game because I have been spoiled by watching European soccer. Here's a game from today. Real Madrid vs Barcelona. Hardly a snooze fest, and 8 goals combined scored. A lot of the games in Europe are like this too. Everyone generalizations are over the top. I don't see "accidental" goals as one retard here stated. The amount of athletic ability required to play soccer is by far more than that required to run around and hit people. I love football too by the way. How many of you here can play a sport solely with their feet? It's much harder than playing any sport with your hands.

What does playing have to do with watching???

Also most of these players have been playing since 1st grade or younger. Just like a guitar or anything else you're going to be good later in life if you keep it up.

"How many of you here can play a sport solely with their feet? It's much harder than playing any sport with your hands."

Just because it's "harder with your feet" means nothing... in fact I played soccer when I was younger and found it to be one of the easiest sports to play. How about Ice Hockey? They SKATE ON ICE... and USE A STICK. How about baseball? Try hitting 95mph balls WITH A STICK. Using extensions not of your own physical body isn't EASY. How about shooting a little ball through a hoop? Football? Try making moves around the field knowing at any moment you could be leveled. Playing a game with your feet is a joke.

"The amount of athletic ability required to play soccer is by far more than that required to run around and hit people."

You're a bit wrong here too. Soccer is about ENDURANCE. They train to have endurance so they can RUN AROUND BACK AND FORTH OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN ON A GIANT ASS FIELD. What they train for is a contribution to why the sport is so boring.

I equate a Soccer player with that of a Cyclist. Lots of endurance, strong lower body, and boring to watch (except the ending if it looks close in both cases)... only part of Tour De France I'd watch was the ending moments when Lance would win.

You put a soccer player against an NFL caliber player and they'll get their **** pushed in if it when it comes to their respective sports. Tell a David Beckham to take a shot from Julius Peppers... then tell Peppers to run around for a while, maybe dribble the ball, or if he's a defender try and get a steal... I'd like to see Peppers at goaltender... basketball experience and lots of height and quickness.

Also, 8 scores combined over how many minutes? Also an 8 score game is a rarity in soccer... using an example where there is a multitude of scoring is a poor example for soccer. It's like saying oh hey... we just beat the Raiders 52-38.

http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/scoreboard?league=all&cc=3888

Look at the scores... wow man so many 8 score games right? NOPE. **** tons of shutouts and 1-0/2-1 scores though.

There are even 1-1 scores... wow what an exciting ending.

Sorry man, but defending something you like with horrid facts just isn't logical.

Americans in the grand scheme of things HATE SOCCER because it's boring when compared to the other sports we enjoy. We invented American Football, Basketball, and Baseball and kept it within our nation for the most part, while the rest of the world had Soccer and grew up with that.

Just because you like a boring sport doesn't mean anything bad against you. Hell, people like Cricket too... people like Curling... nothing wrong with it. It's just stupid though to defend soccer like it's a fun thing to watch for Americans who are spoiled by the action packed entertainment that comes with most of our major sports.

Like I said man, I LIVED IN EUROPE... I WENT TO A REAL "EUROPEAN SOCCER" GAME (which btw they hosted a world cup game at the stadium I went to in Kaiserslautern)... it was boring as ****. I'm spoiled by football and baseball... and college basketball. (also I think as one person pointed out Ice Hockey is superior to Soccer due to the fights/shorter games/shorter field.

You understand soccer about as much as you understand rocket science.

Don't fool yourself.

You're like a woman watching football who could care less. "This isnt any fun...the game is stopped more than the players play...nothing ever happens...this game is like three hours of nothing.'

Take your woman-schpiel and cram it, grandma. Ha!

Soccer is for low IQ humans or third world country citizens who used a coconut to play their game. Later they took drama before dropping out in 9th grade to fullfill the complete look and act of a soccer player. Soccer is soooooo basic of a sport yet cant make itself anymore exciting until they realize that indoor soccer is better and shows that the fans packed it in with 16k instead of a 80% empty stadium. Take your soccer crap to the appropriate place TJ destined it for and be happy it isnt the Butt.

I can ... meaningful baseball in October is great drama . and I'm not even into baseball really ...

Soccer just looks like a bunch of people running around kicking a ball and hoping once maybe twice a day everything will go just right and the stars line up and the ball will bounce just right and no one will get in the way and the wind is with them and the moon is in the right orbit and a goal happens .

And the announcer goes Ape $hit ... GOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL...
and if I had to sit through however many hours of watching them run back and forth I'd be over joyed as well that something happened .

Even if it is the most important soccer match of the year is just to much nothing special for 30secs of something special to be that entertaining .

Jens you just have to realize that most Americans for the most part don't realize or care that there are Billions of people that live beyond our borders. We tend to think that America is the end all. I love this country but there are certainly other countries, cultures, and sports to appreciate in our world.

Had the pleasure of attending some games in Munich when I was a young lad. Great times. Attending a Griese led Denver Bronco team was like attending a funeral compared to attending a soccer game in Germany.

With that being said Obama I'd like to see Obama stick to his original agenda he laid out before he spends too much time acting as a booking agent for an event that this country really doesn't care about.

I lived in Germany bub, if you bothered to read what I wrote earlier. Also there were plenty of people in the stands.

You see... I go to games for enjoyment... not to watch a bunch of drunk fans go nuts. Emotion? lol. It's funny that the few people advocating soccer like yourself are saying Soccer is good because of the "emotion" blah blah. Basically you're admitting the game itself is a boring pile of **** to watch, and it's the overzealous fans that make it any fun at all (for people that like that stuff).

Sorry man, like I've said... been to live games for both and Baseball is easily and without a doubt more entertaining for me live that Soccer.

Soccer = Europe's/Africa's NASCAR

P.S. you loose all credibility by saying every damn English premier league game has more emotion than a game 7 Boston/NY. It's clear you're flustered beyond reason to the point that you're making outlandish claims that are beyond false.

I actually watched the Boston/Chicago NBA games due to how well I saw the first 6 games went (really close games). A game 7 between two teams that HATE each other is insanely emotional.

You can't even begin to grasp how much the Red Socks mean to Boston and to a large extent the Yankees to New York, due to you're ridiculous claims.

By your theories a Broncos vs Division Opponent game can't match up to an all amazing English Premier League game. Hell... based on the fact that it seems you watch Soccer for the "emotion" it would seem if the top Euro sport was Handball instead of Soccer... and 70k fans showed up to a game drunk and sceaming, that would be more exciting than any other sport to you. You make no logic. (ps i think handball is more fun to watch than Soccer)

Yeah, it can't. People at the games don't have any emotion. I get yelled at for standing up or yelling at the players. It's just a bunch of people sitting together casually cheering here and there, only going nuts when we score a TD. There's very little emotion in Invesco. And I'm pretty sure 90% of the board agrees there. So yes, an European soccer game has more fan interaction and cheering than a Broncos/Chiefs game. I know I am a dumb "soccer honk" but I was at 2 CU and 2 Bronco home games in October and both places felt like a morgue compared what I am used to ..... and I even was in the South Stands for the Tampa game.

Mile High was better than Folsom, but it seriously only got "loud" on third down. Folsom was somewhat "loud" on KSUīs last drive with the game in the balance. Even Kyle Field disappointed me when I was there for the aTm/CU game and Kyle Field is supposed to be one of the better places in CFB.

And to leap off of that... by virtue of there being more fan "insanity" in Soccer, it is a better sport. Which by that logic means Soccer could be watching paint dry... if there was a ton of "soccer clone fans" it would be a fun event to go to.

Basically you're admitting the game itself is a boring pile of **** to watch, and it's the overzealous fans that make it any fun at all (for people that like that stuff).

Sorry man, like I've said... been to live games for both and Baseball is easily and without a doubt more entertaining for me live that Soccer.

Soccer = The World, outside of the US's NASCAR,NFL,NBA,MLB,NCAA,PGA,PBA... COMBINED!!!!!

P.S. you loose all credibility by saying every damn English premier league game has more emotion than a game 7 Boston/NY.

(ps i think handball is more fun to watch than Soccer)

i understand that people dont want their perspective blocked or whatever, but in agame like that, on 3rd downs when we are on D, there is no reason that the whole crowd shouldnt be on tehir feet

You should probably read back as to why it's popular. Most countries on this planet are poor. It's a poor man's sport. Hence it's spread like wildfire, and people who get attached to something as kids and grow up around something will probably not let that go. Regardless, the sport is still boring. Been to more Euro Soccer games than over 95% of this forum, so I base my judgment off that and sporting events I've attended in the USA. If anyone likes to watch Soccer I don't give a damn. Good for you if you like it. I have no high horse. But that doesn't change the fact the sport just like how it was described so brilliantly in that Simpson video.

Your argument gets worse and worse dude.

To you it may be boring but to others who actually see the skill involved in being a soccer player its a different story. Some have complained that the game ends 0-0 1-0, thats even more glorious of a win, than some high scoring affair. Its the build up and suspense of a goal is what drives the fans and the game. The game is far more complex than others make it out to be and its both physical and mental. Either way, the history of the game is irrelevant to the topic at hand. And your statement about it being a poor mans game shows your ignorance.

Baseball became the American pastime for the same reason that soccer is the Worlds pastime. Anyone can play it anywhere at any time...on a street, in the sand, on a rough patch of dirt, in an alley, etc. All you need is something to use as a ball. With baseball, you just need something to swing and something to hit and its fun. Same thing with soccer...you just need some friends and a ball...you dont even need goals.

Soccer is a great sport, and the GREATEST sport on the planet. If tomorrow, a bunch of aliens wrote a book about the human species of earth, they would note that humans play many games, but that soccer is beloved all over the planet like nothing else.

I love how it's almost like some of you feel you have to prove your manliness by showing just how much you hate soccer.

It's not enough to simply find it uninteresting and leave it at that; that might imply you there is still a chance you are okay with other people enjoying something other than manliest of manly men sports: American football!

Any mention of the word "soccer" must provoke outrage at the utter "gayness" of the concept. You must explain why it is the most ****ing boring game ever created and that the rest of the world is just retarded because they can't understand the awesome, testosterone pumping greatness of an insanely complicated sport that is really only played in one country.

Anything less and, well, you might get mistaken for one of those European pussys. And we couldn't live with that, could we.

I think Barca is definitely a better attacking team, but Chelsea did a great job not allowing anything last week. Even with Puyol back, I don't think they stand a chance. With the speed of Ronaldo and Rooney on the counter.. Barca better be on top of their game. Maybe the vision of Xavi and the brilliance of Messi might pull them through.

That counter that started with Ronaldo back flick and ended with Ronaldo finishing it shows how dangerous they can be.

I think Ronaldo wants to win else where. he has already won everything with ManU, he wans new challeges. Also, isn't ManU conceeding the fact that they will loose Ronaldo by trying to acquire Ribery.

I wouldn't call Real washed up. They got some very good players in Casillas, Van Nistelrooy, Sneijder, Robben, Huntelaar and Van der Vaart. With Sneijder and Van der Vaart in the midfield, Robben and Ronaldo on the wing, Nistelrooy playing forward. All they really need is a coach who can put it all together.

Real just doesn't win like they used to. Also I think with the way they handle transfers now, by pretty much announcing them without even having come to agreement with a player or their club is starting to rub the rest of Europes top teams the wrong way.

I agree Ronaldo probably wants new challenges, but I prefer players who stick around and become legends in their clubs by loyalty. I read the other day Ferguson stated he has never once recieved a transfer offer for Scholes or Giggs, because everyone knows their loyalty stays with Man Utd.

I heard they are not only looking at Ribery, but also Kaka and Benzema. They could probably afford either player even by keeping Ronaldo around.

I'm glad a high school degree is required to tell which sport is more exciting, thanks for being relevant there
Like 2/3 of a baseball game isn't even playing time. It's windups, signals being called and time between every ****ing inning. It's so mundane that they even have a time during the game in which the fans stretch their legs because they haven't used them at all.
So while you want to think the "sport" of baseball is more exciting than soccer, keep it to your stereotypical American self. Some of us like the sport and not having the entire world hate us.

Your soccer heroics here look worse for your crowd. "atomicBLOKE"? You are only American because you took the test. We dont use words here like "Anti Foneco" and "Bloke".

wow... so that makes him less of an American because he was Naturalized? What exactly did you do to become an American citizen? What was that awe inspiring thing you did that makes you more of an American?

My sweet jesus, can someone please explain to me how nationality matters? Does your nationality make you superior to someone else or is someone else inferior to you simply because of his nationality?

No I believe that to be better you have to work harder, have a better system of govt, etc etc. I do want the USA to be superior, and I do always pull for Americans over other nationalities. I don't however think it is a genetic superiority, god given, or anything like that.

Honestly though it is all about America to me. I don't see why I would care how China is doing etc. I also like the competition between countries and love it when we kick ass.

P.S Soccer is gay and without USA Europe would be eating a lot of bratwurst.

See this is annoying too. I ask folks to look at this guy whining, and learn from it. Apparently, he believes that the mods here have this forum jacked directly into their brains, and the very nano-second that something happens, red flags go off and we're immediately taken through virtual cyberspace to correct the issue.

In reality, the mods here are just people like yourself who love the Broncos and this forum and have decided to kick in some of their extra time to help keep this place cleaned up. For all anyone knows, Blueflame is out checking the mail or picking her kid up from school - but someone was offended, and suddenly she's getting berated on this forum like she's the one who made the comment.

There are no "American" genes.

America is literally a diverse pool of genes from around the world.

However, we are a country and everytime the US suit up against another country, I pull for the home team.

They did help us become a nation for sure and we should always remember that.

But it was more a case of our enemy's enemy is our friend. America came through big time in WW2 and IMO paid all debt.

You can only imagine how hard America would have fought had the fighting been on our soil. French from what I know did not send troops to die, the sent naval power, money, supplies etc because they were in conflict with England.

Go ask Frenchmen on the street if helping America become a nation was a good idea. Then ask men from America if fighting in ww2 and liberating France was a good move. What side do you think would have the higher %?

I feel the fact we are diverse is why it's a formula for nationalism without racism. In America we know that no race is smarter or more capable of success over another race. You win by working hard, playing hard, loving life. Other western countries just don't have our diversity. No one can match all the different cultures we have.

Not only do we bag on soccer, but there is a ton of people living here that love soccer. Many from other countries. I think that is great, you watch one day we probably will dominate that and win the World Cup.

Who knows that might just make me love it. I'm sure some of the countries disdain for Soccer is that we aren't as good at it as other countries.

Plus we didn't even it. We love Basketball and Football, Baseball, because they are American!!!!!!

By the way who did invent soccer?

Also props to the Scottish for Golf. Even though some say they took it from a game the Dutch played. I am Dutch so I think they get some props as well!!!

What I took away from my readings is that the war was lost for Hitler when the Wehrmacht failed to take Russia by the time winter fell in 1941. And I seriously doubt the Red Army wouldīve stopped in Berlin hadnīt the Western Allies opened a front in the West.

Many countries can match and beat the diversity found in the states, if you want to see ethnic and cultural diversity you should try to go to London or Paris.

It is not so much that they send over arms, supplies, naval power and military advisors to help form militias, it is more that they kept 80% of the Kings army and navy occupied elsewhere. If the entire Royal military had shown up they wouldn't have stopped after sacking Washington.

She banned my on a bronco game weekend for saying something that was IMO not an offense. Telling someone to take a swim is a trash can with his wife to cool off is not over the line IMO, especially since it was being said to a poster who at the time was constantly saying he would come to my home town to fight me. Stuff like that IMO far worst then a little joke about your families swimming pool being a trash can.

She rubbed me the wrong way but I will take your word for it that she doesn't deserve it. hard to know someone from just some posts on the internet.

Basketball was invented by a Canadian this is true. But where was it first played? From what I understand the man who invented it was teaching in the USA. I understand as Americans we come from all over, but if it's done in America first, I put forth it was the American spirit that bore it.

As far as football goes the game we know was invented by Englishman at Cambridge. True as far back as 1300 they played games where men tried to advance a ball to a goal etc. But cmon Football is American. Also though pointing out how ideas from other cultures take on a new life and flourish in America.

Baseball same thing. Cricket and other stick and ball games been around for a long time. But the game of Baseball was invented by Alexander Cartwright who was an American as far as I know.

It doesn't matter where it was first played, the plane wasn't invented in america just because the Wrights were the first to sustain self propelled flight, every aspect of their machine was invented elsewhere.

Football was never invented, it started out being an almost exact copy of rugby and then slowly morphed into the various types of football being played today. There is no one point you can say that football started, since it has gradually become what it is.

You can say baseball as we know it was invented by Cartwright, but he didn't really come up with anything new, he just made a few modifications and gave it a name, really what you should say is that the name baseball was coined by Cartwright, rather than the game of baseball was invented by Cartwright.

I know that Americans like to claim everything that happens in America is American, like the atom bomb. But fact is that the people who invented those things weren't American and the reason they never considered themselves to be American.

The Wrights did what had not been done before. Thus they invented it. Every Aspect of everything was made before.

If Football was not invented than why can I watch it on TV?

Soccer ...

IT is played by 3rd world countries because it is easy to FUND and get equipment for ... FACT ... no anti anyone or racism just FACT .

which makes it the easiest game for all countries to play one another at be it rich or poor . WHICH makes it cared about by the most people .

BUT quality over quantity tells us just because of that doesn't mean soccer is the most entertaining it just means it has the most chance of someone coming in contact with it or being a fan.

It is the game of choice for young children because it is so much less ridged then other sports because of it's SIMPLE rules . Fact ...

IT will never take of on TV here cause the networks HATE IT ... period . FACT it's hard to broadcast and run from the booth and does not work well for advertising .

IF soccer fan had had all the choices of stuff to watch we have as far as sports Soccer would be doing as well in those countries as televised bowling does here ...

I have played it and watched it and anyway you slice it it is boring ...
From a indoor league i played for a year to be around some family who played and to stay in shape for a sport I cared for ... To watching it on TV .

Just looks like random flashes of cool for seconds overwhelmed by hours of random acts of nothing .

And nothing from nothing leaves nothing...

So many great FACTS.

I played soccer as a youth, rather seriously and then kind of peetered out late in high school.

I thoroughly enjoy watching skilled teams (no, not MLS). Don't live for it but if I see an EPL or recently a Champions League game I'll check it out. Watch Euro tourney and World Cup religiously, though. In my opinion, if you had a full understanding of the game and an appreciation for it, you can sit down and enjoy a good game of soccer. If you know what you're watching the skill of the players comes to the forefront.

It's not our thing...so what? I wouldn't care for someone trying to cram it down my throat if I didn't like it, just like it is with myself and the WNBA or NASCAR. But, when you're watcing a game between two top teams, you're watching world class sport, in my opinion.
