Nolan Nawrocki's 15 first-round matches set new standard for mock drafts

Like fine wine, Nolan Nawrocki is getting better with age.

In his projections as to how the 2009 NFL draft would play out, posted more than four hours before the first selection was made, the Pro Football Weekly personnel analyst outdid his mock draft competitors with an amazing 15 players matched to the team that drafted them. (We counted the Broncos' selection of RB Knowshon Moreno as a match even though Nawrocki had predicted Denver would draft him with its 18th pick rather than its 12th.) Another 13 of his first-round projections were selected in the opening round as predicted, leaving only four who escaped the top 32 picks. All four of his misses — Rey Maualuga, Darius Butler, James Laurinaitis and Eben Britton — were then scooped up in the first nine picks of Round Two.

Among Nawrocki’s on-target projections that few other forecasters had predicted were the Raiders’ selection of WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, the 49ers’ choice of WR Michael Crabtree, the Texans’ pick of LB Brian Cushing, the Vikings’ selection of WR Percy Harvin, the Falcons’ choice of DT Peria Jerry, and the Giants’ pick of WR Hakeem Nicks.

How does he do on his March Madness bracket? Maybe he should give it a try.
